Excel - VALUE Function

VALUE Function

The Excel VALUE function transforms a text string transparently written in numbers into a quantitative value. Its hidden qualities work perfectly with the DATE/TIME and quickly alter the input text into numeric values; inconsistent errors are removed if a number is in text form, whereas other Excel functions generate errors instead of producing accurate results. Multiple case scenarios like stock text data, data correction in Excel reports loaded from the external website, compliance reporting, and custom data reporting where the VALUE function can empirically be used.

Examples of VALUE Functions

Practice the following example to learn the use of the VALUE function in Excel.

Example 1: How to Apply the VALUE Function in the Excel Worksheet

Solution

Step 1 − First, consider the sample Excel worksheet consisting of two columns titled "Input Text" and"VALUE Function". The different text types are showcased in the B column with cell B3:B6. You also have to calculate the VALUE function corresponding to these input values.

Step 2 − After that, select the cell range C3:C6 and write the expression "=VALUE(B3)" in the formula box.

Step 3 − Furthermore, you can press the "ctrl+enter" keys from the keyboard, which populates the computed results in one go in the selected cell range C3:C6.

As you can notice in the above screenshot, the date and time formatting is diminished after evaluating the VALUE function in the C4, C5, and C6 cells.

Example 2

If you specify the text value in the first argument, the VALUE function will retrieve the #VALUE!

Solution

You may write the formula =VALUE("harrie") in the B3 cell and press Enter.

Specify Text Value in First Argument1

Therefore, the VALUE function will return the #VALUE! error. You can edit the text value to the numeric value in the first argument to get an accurate result.

Specify Text Value in First Argument2

Example 3

If the cell reference inside the Text argument points to the null value, the VALUE function returns the value to 0.

Solution

Enter the formula "=VALUE(A3)" in the B3 cell and hit the Enter tab. Here, the A3 cell's value is empty.

Cell Reference Inside Text Argument Points

Hence, the VALUE function will produce the result of 0 as an empty value.
