Excel - BETAINV Function

BETAINV Function

The BETAINV function generates the inverse of the cumulative beta probability density function for an individual beta distribution. It uses an iterative technique to reach an accurate result for the given probability. An error could occur if the BETINV function fails to conclude after 100 iterations.

The BETAINV function interchanges the BETA.INV function from Excel 2010.

Compatibility

This advanced Excel function is compatible with the following versions of MS-Excel −

  • Excel for Microsoft 365
  • Excel for Microsoft 365 for Mac
  • Excel for the web
  • Excel 2021
  • Excel 2021 for Mac
  • Excel 2019
  • Excel 2019 for Mac
  • Excel 2016

Syntax

The syntax of BETAINV function is as follows −

BETAINV (probability,alpha,beta,[A],[B])

Arguments

You can use the following arguments with the BETAINV function −

Argument Description Required / Optional
Probability A probability interlinked with the BETDIST function. Required
Alpha A distribution parameter. Required
Beta Another distribution parameter. Required
A An interval of x's lower bound. Optional
B An interval of x's upper bound Optional

Points to Remember

  • BETAINV returns the #VALUE! error value if any of the defined arguments are non-numeric.
  • Either Beta or Alpha is less than equal to zero, BETAINV retrieves the #NUM! error value.
  • Use the BETAINV function and Pert Distribution to identify the project completion time.
  • If the p > 1 or p 0, BETAINV retrieves the error named #NUM!.
  • Skipping A and B parameters, BETAINV employs the standard cumulative beta distribution. In this scenario, zero value is to be taken by the A parameter and one value will take place for the B parameter.
  • If A equals B parameter then the BETAINV function retrieves the error named #NUM!.

Examples of BETAINV Function

Practice the following examples to learn the use of the BETAINV function in Excel.

Example 1

Calculate the BETAINV function for the given probability

Solution

Consider the sample dataset where Alpha, Beta, A, B, and x parametric values are specified in the cell range C3:C6. You may enter the formula =BETAINV(C2,C3,C4,C5,C6) in the C7 cell and press the Enter tab.

Excel BETAINV Function 1

Excel BETAINV Function 2

Therefore, the resulting value is 8.00074281.

Example 2

Use the BETAINV function and Pert Distribution to identify the project completion time.

Solution

Step 1 − Consider the sample dataset where Lt stands for the least time required for specific project completion, MAT denotes the maximum period to finish the project and the best estimate specifies the most significant time for completion.

Excel BETAINV Function 3

Step 2 − You may enter the formula =(B2+4*B3+B4)/6 in the B5 cell and press Enter to get the mean.

Excel BETAINV Function 4

Note − The PERT distribution best evaluation technique employed to evaluate mean and standard deviation.

Step 3 − Enter the formula = (B4-B2)/6 in the B6 cell and press Enter to compute the standard deviation.

Excel BETAINV Function 5

Step 4 − You may enter the formula "=4*(B3-B2)/(B4-B2)+1" in the B7 cell.

Excel BETAINV Function 6

Excel BETAINV Function 7

Step 5 − You can calculate the Beta parameter by using the formula "=4*((B4-B3)/(B4-B2))+1" which is entered in the B8 cell to get its computed value.

Excel BETAINV Function 8

Step 6 − Lets suppose that the probability of project completion is 0.8. Enter the formula =BETAINV(0.8, B7, B8) in the B9 cell and press the Enter tab.

Example 3

Either Beta or Alpha is less than equal to zero, BETAINV retrieves the #NUM! error value.

Solution

You may enter the formula "=BETAINV(.34, -1,-2)" in the C2 cell and press the Enter tab. Therefore, the BETAINV function will create the error value #NUM! as the alpha and beta parameters value is less than 0.

Example 4

If the p > 1 or p 0, BETAINV retrieves the error named #NUM!

Solution

You may enter the expression "=BETAINV(-2, 4,2)" in the C3 cell and press the Enter tab.

Excel BETAINV Function 14

Note − The probability of any outcome cannot be negative.

Example 5

BETAINV returns the #VALUE! error value if any of the defined arguments are non-numeric.

Solution

Write the expression "=BETAINV(0.7, "at",3,0)" in the C4 cell and press the Enter tab. Hence, the #VALUE! error arises once you execute this expression.

Excel BETAINV Function 16

Note − Ensure that all the parameters inside the BETINV must be numeric otherwise the function returns #VALUE! error.

Example 6

Skipping A and B parameters, BETAINV employs the standard cumulative beta distribution. In this scenario, by default, the parameter B becomes 1 and A becomes 0.

Solution

You may enter the formula "=BETAINV(C3,C4,C5)" in the C8 cell. In this function, A and B parameters cell references are not used.

Excel BETAINV Function 17

Excel BETAINV Function 18

Therefore, the resulting value is shown in the above image.

Example 7

If A equals B parameter then the BETAINV function retrieves the error named #NUM!.

Solution

You may enter the expression "=BETAINV(C3,C4,C5,C6,C7)" in the C8 cell and press the Enter tab. As you can see in the screenshot, the A and B cell references contain the same value.
