The Excel FIXED function transforms numeric values into text. Its primary purpose is to compact a lengthy numeric value by rounding it and setting the specific number of digits after the decimal point. The function also enables number formatting, using commas and periods. For instance, downloading a massive dataset whose data formatting is improper. This robust function makes it possible to allow the fixed formatting of the dataset and receive the result in text formatting.

Syntax

The syntax of the FIXED function is written below −

FIXED (number, [decimals], [no_commas])

Arguments

You can use the following arguments with the FIXED function −

Argument Description Required / Optional
Number It specifies a number value to be rounded off and transformed into text. Required
Decimals It indicates the number of digits displayed on the decimal's right side. Optional
No_commas It denotes a logical value that,
  • if TRUE, the commas are excluded in the result.
  • Otherwise, the resulting value may also include commas.

Points To Remember

  • In Microsoft Excel, the FIXED function retrieves only 15 significant digits in number, where the decimals argument can take values up to 127.
  • If the decimal argument contains the nonpositive value, the number is rounded to the left of the decimal point.
  • If you skip the decimals argument, its value is considered 2.
  • If Number or Decimals arguments contain values other than a numeric value, then the FIXED function will retrieve the #VALUE! Error.

How to Use FIXED Function in Excel?

The FIXED function is used to round a number to a specified number of decimal places and optionally format the result as text with commas separating thousands.

Solution

Step 1 − Consider the sample dataset comprises two columns named "Number" and "Converted to Text".

Step 2 − First, select the C2 cell and enter the formula =FIXED(B3).

Therefore, the Fixed function will retrieve the decimal number of 80.00.

Step 3 − Furthermore, double-click on the C3 cell and type the formula =FIXED(B3,0). In this expression, the Decimals argument is set to 0, meaning only the integer value is retrieved through this expression.

After that, press the Enter tab to obtain the result.

Step 4 − If you wish to get only a single digit after the decimal point in a number, set a Decimal argument to 1. Double-click on the B4 cell and enter another formula, "=FIXED(B4,1)", in the C4 cell.

Afterward, press the Enter tab to obtain the resulting value of 80.0.

Step 5 − Moreover, write the formula =FIXED(B5,2) in the C5 cell and press the Enter tab.

Therefore, the FIXED function returns to the decimal number 80.00.

Step 6 − Similarly, select the C6 cell and write the formula =FIXED(B6).

And then hit the Enter tab to get the output.

Step 7 − Moreover, double-click on the C7 and enter the formula =FIXED(B7,0).

After entering the press button, the FIXED function will return the integer number that is 80.

Step 8 − Furthermore, double-click on the C8 and type the formula =FIXED(B8,1).

And then, hit the Enter tab. The FIEXD function will retrieve the number which is round to 80.3.

Step 9 − After that, select the C9 cell and write the formula =FIXED(B9,2) in it

Press the Enter tab to obtain an accurate result.

Step 10 − Afterward, choose the C9 cell, drag the + sign located at the bottom right corner of it, and drop the fill handle to the C13 cell to evaluate the remaining cell values.
