DEFINATION OF COMPUTER..

1:A computer is a programmable machine designed to sequentially and


automatically carry out a sequence of arithmetic or logical operations.
2: An electronic device for storing and processing data, typically in binary form, according to instructions
given to it in a variable program.

History of computer..

The history of computers starts out about 2000 years ago, at the birth of the abacus, a wooden rack holding
two horizontal wires with beads strung on them. When these beads are moved around, according to
programming rules memorized by the user, all regular arithmetic problems can be done. Another
important invention around the same time was the Astrolabe, used for navigation. Blaise Pascal is usually
credited for building the first digital computer in 1642. It added numbers entered with dials and was made
to help his father, a tax collector. In 1671, Gottfried Wilhelm von Leibniz invented a computer that was
built in 1694. It could add, and, after changing some things around, multiply. Leibniz invented a special
stepped gear mechanism for introducing the addend digits, and this is still being used. The prototypes
made by Pascal and Leibniz were not used in many places, and considered weird until a little more than a
century later, when Thomas of Colmar (A.K.A. Charles Xavier Thomas) created the first successful
mechanical calculator that could add, subtract, multiply, and divide. A lot of improved desktop calculators
by many inventors followed, so that by about 1890, the range of improvements included:

• Accumulation of partial results


• Storage and automatic reentry of past results (A memory function)
• Printing of the results

Each of these required manual installation. These improvements were mainly made for commercial users,
and not for the needs of science.

First inventer of computer..


Many say the first computer is the "difference engine." The first of these devices was conceived in 1786 by
J.H. Müller. It was never built.
Difference engines were forgotten and then rediscovered in 1822 by Englishman Charles Babbage..who is
known as "the father of the Computer". This machine used the decimal numbers system and was powered
by cranking a handle. The British government first financed the project but then later cut off support.
Babbage went on to design his much more general analytical engine but later returned and produced an
improved design (his "Difference Engine No. 2") between 1834 and 1869.
Still others will say the abacus is the first computer. They were invented by the Chinese between 2600 BC
and 300 BC is considered as the first computer ever. Abacus was used by the merchants and Clerks in
China.

Charles Babbage invented the concept of a programmable computer in about 1856.


It partly depends on what you mean by "computer", but the earliest claim is that Charles Babbage invented
the first programmable computer in 1822. The machine was called a "difference engine" and it was
intended to generate mathematical tables. This machine contained 25,000 parts and weighed 15 tons.
Babbage followed this with a "difference engine 2" which, although well funded, was never completed.
Babbage also designed a printer to go along with the computer, but this also was never completed. In 1989-
1991, the London science museum made a difference engine 2 and printer from Babbage's design. Both
worked perfectly.

Benefits of computer..
Computers play a huge part in many all of our lives in one way or another. They have many purposes and
are used in various types of environments, such as medical facilities, government offices, and many
households.

Using a computer, one can remain connected to the world through Internet. Internet is a network of
computers that communicates via the Internet Protocol Suite (TCP/IP). The World Wide Web (WWW) or
simply web is a huge resource of information that can be accessed via the Internet. To mention a few of the
resources, there are electronic mail (e-mail), file transferring and sharing, online chat and gaming. The
Internet allows people from around the world to share knowledge, ideas and experiences in any field.

E-mail is a method of communication used globally and is provided with a system of creating, storing and
forwarding mails. It may consist of text messages with attachments of audio-visual clips. One can also
download or upload files using the Internet. There are also facilities like online chatting available on the
Internet. As compared to telephonic conversation, both e-mail and online chat are cost saving. Online
gaming is another important resource of the WWW. Many online games are available, which are of
common interest for any age group. In addition, one can read current news, check weather conditions, plan
vacations and make hotel and travel reservations, find out about diseases and treatment methods, conduct
transactions, learn about specific countries and their cultures, seek jobs, buy products, etc via the Internet.

Nowadays, computers are widely used for education and training purposes. In schools, computer education
has been made compulsory to spread awareness about computers. As a matter of fact, computers have
become a learning tool for children. Also, there are many universities that provide online degrees, which is
very advantageous for those people staying in the remote areas and for the disabled. In fact, online
education is one of the most flexible and convenient forms of learning. One can take the benefit of such
online degree programs staying at home without the need of relocation. Computers are also used for
training purposes. Many companies use them to train their staffs.

Computers are making so many things possible. Without computer technology everything would take a lot
slower to perform and everyday life would be less productive. That’s why I said that computer technology
has many benefits.
