The strongly coupled quark-gluon plasma created at RHIC / Heinz, Ulrich W (Ohio State U. ; CERN)
The Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) was built to re-create and study in the laboratory the extremely hot and dense matter that filled our entire universe during its first few microseconds. Its operation since June 2000 has been extremely successful, and the four large RHIC experiments have produced an impressive body of data which indeed provide compelling evidence for the formation of thermally equilibrated matter at unprecedented temperatures and energy densities -- a "quark-gluon plasma (QGP)". Hydrodynamic radial and elliptic flow in heavy-ion collisions from AGS to LHC energies / Kestin, Gregory (Ohio State University, Columbus, OH) ; Heinz, Ulrich W (Ohio State University, Columbus, OH ; CERN)
Using ideal relativistic hydrodynamics in 2+1 dimensions, we study the collision energy dependence of radial and elliptic flow, of the emitted hadron spectra, and of the transverse momentum dependence of several hadronic particle ratios, covering the range from Alternating Gradient Synchrotron (AGS) to Large Hadron Collider (LHC) energies. These calculations establish an ideal fluid dynamic baseline that can be used to assess non-equilibrium features manifest in future LHC heavy-ion experiments. [...]

Causal relativistic hydrodynamics for viscous fluids / Heinz, Ulrich W. (Ohio State U. ; CERN) ; Song, Huichao (Ohio State U.)
We report on recent results from VISH2+1, a code that solves the relativistic Israel-Stewart equations for causal viscous hydrodynamics for heavy-ion collisions with longitudinal boost invariance. We find that even ``minimal'' shear viscosity eta/s=hbar/(4pi) leads to a large reduction of elliptic flow compared to ideal fluid dynamics. [...]

Multiplicity scaling in ideal and viscous hydrodynamics / Song, Huichao (Ohio State U.) ; Heinz, Ulrich W. (Ohio State U. ; CERN)
Using numerical results from ideal and viscous relativistic hydrodynamic simulations with three different equations of state, for Au+Au and Cu+Cu collisions at different centralities and initial energy densities, we explore the dependence of the eccentricity-scaled elliptic flow, v_2/epsilon, and the produced entropy fraction, Delta S/S_0, on the final charged hadron multiplicity density dN_ch/dy per unit transverse overlap area S, (1/S)(dN_ch/dy). The viscous hydrodynamic simulations are performed with two different versions of the Israel-Stewart kinetic evolution equations, and in each case we investigate the dependence of the physical observables on the kinetic relaxation time. Radiative energy loss in a finite dynamical QCD medium / Djordjevic, Magdalena (Ohio State U.) ; Heinz, Ulrich W (Ohio State U. ; CERN)
The radiative energy loss of a quark jet traversing a finite size QCD medium with dynamical constituents is calculated to first order in opacity. Although finite size corrections reduce the energy loss relative to an infinite dynamical QCD medium, under realistic conditions it remains significantly larger than in a static medium. [...]

Causal viscous hydrodynamics in 2+1 dimensions for relativistic heavy-ion collisions / Song, Huichao (Ohio State U.) ; Heinz, Ulrich W. (Ohio State U. ; CERN)
We explore the effects of shear viscosity on the hydrodynamic evolution and final hadron spectra of Cu+Cu collisions at ultrarelativistic collision energies, using the newly developed (2+1)-dimensional viscous hydrodynamic code VISH2+1. Based on the causal Israel-Stewart formalism, this code describes the transverse evolution of longitudinally boost-invariant systems without azimuthal symmetry around the beam direction. [...]

Mass ordering of differential elliptic flow and its violation for phi mesons / Hirano, Tetsufumi (Tokyo U.) ; Heinz, Ulrich W. (Ohio State U. ; CERN) ; Kharzeev, Dmitri (Brookhaven) ; Lacey, Roy (SUNY, Stony Brook, Chem. Dept.) ; Nara, Yasushi (Akita Intl. U.)
We simulate the dynamics of Au+Au collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) with a hybrid model that treats the dense early quark-gluon plasma (QGP) stage macroscopically as an ideal fluid, but models the dilute late hadron resonance gas (HG) microscopically using a hadronic cascade. By comparing with a pure hydrodynamic approach we identify effects of hadronic viscosity on the transverse momentum spectra and differential elliptic flow v_2(p_T). [...]

Suppression of elliptic flow in a minimally viscous quark-gluon plasma / Song, Huichao (Ohio State U.) ; Heinz, Ulrich W. (Ohio State U. ; CERN)
We compute the time evolution of elliptic flow in non-central relativistic heavy-ion collisions, using a (2+1)-dimensional code with longitudinal boost-invariance to simulate viscous fluid dynamics in the causal Israel-Stewart formulation. We show that even ``minimal'' shear viscosity eta/s=hbar/(4pi) leads to a large reduction of elliptic flow compared to ideal fluid dynamics, raising questions about the interpretation of recent experimental data from the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider..
