Assignment - 4

1 Show that the equation p = (ey + 1) cos x and q = ey sin x are compatible and then find their
common solution.

2 Find a complete integral of the following PDEs

(a) 16p2 z 2 + 9q 2 z 2 + 4z 2 − 4 = 0
(b) (p2 + q 2 )n (qx − py) = 1
(c) (p + q)(px + qy) = 1
(d) px + qy + pq = 0
(e) p + q = 3pq
(f) x2 p2 + y 2 q 2 = 4
(g) p = eq
(h) pqz = p2 (xq + p2 ) + q 2 (yp + q 2 )
(i) (1 − x2 )yp2 + x2 q = 0
(j) p − q = x2 + y 2

3 Determine the characterstics the PDE p2 + q 2 = 4z and find the solution of the equation which
reduces to z = x2 + 1 when y = 0.

4 Find the integral surface of the PDE (p2 + q 2 )x = pz which contains the curves x = 0 and z 2 = 4y.

5 Solve the following homogeneous PDEs

∂2z ∂2z
(a) ∂x2
+ ∂y 2
= cos mx cos ny

(b) (D3 − 3DD′2 − 2D′3 )z = cos(x + 2y)

(c) r − t = x − y
1
(d) (D3 − 4D2 D′ + 5DD′2 − 2D′3 )z = e(y+2x) + (y + x) 2
∂2u ∂2u
(e) ∂x2
+ ∂y 2
= −4π(x2 + y 2 )

(f) (D2 − 2DD′ + D′2 )z = e(x+2y) + x3

∂3z ∂ z3 ∂3z 1
(g) ∂x2 ∂y
− 2 ∂x∂y 2 + ∂y 3
= x2

(h) (D3 + 2D2 D − DD′2 − 2D′3 )z = (y + 2)ex

(i) (D3 − D2 D′ − 2DD′2 )z = e(x+2y) (x2 + 4y 2 )

1
(j) (D3 − 3DD′2 − 2D′3 )z = 4 cos(x + 2y) − ey (3 + 2x)

6 Solve the following nonhomogeneous PDEs

(a) s + p − q − z = 0
(b) r + 2s + t + 2p + 2q + z = 0
∂2z ∂2z
(c) ∂x2
+ ∂y 2
= n2 z

(d) (D2 − D′2 + D + 3D′ − 2)z = e(x−y)

(e) (D2 − D′2 − 3D′ )z = e(x+2y)
(f) (D2 − D′ )z = cos(3x − y)
(g) (D + D′ − 1)(D + 2D′ − 3)z = 4 + 3x + 6y
