The environmental risk assessment (ERA) of plant protection products (PPPs) is commonly conducted for a number of standard laboratory species, though its scope includes all species, especially those that are vulnerable or endangered. This begs the question of how the eco-physiological and life history traits of those data-rich species compare to those of less documented species. This paper investigates the utility of a database of such traits, the Add-my-Pet collection of Dynamic Energy Budget theory, for the ERA of North American birds. We identified 72 bird species in the collection that have a federal listing status or are otherwise of interest for the ERA of PPPs and compared their eco-physiological and life history traits in relation to body size, feeding guild, and taxonomic identity to those of 446 terrestrial Holarctic birds, as well as those of standard lab species, notably the northern bobwhite, mallard, and zebra finch. The properties of standard lab species generally align with those of a similar taxonomy and size, with the notable exception of the relatively high reproductive capacity of the northern bobwhite and mallard due to the unique properties of laboratory study data. In addition, taxonomy appears to be a better predictor of eco-physiological traits than feeding guild. We conclude that, to identify representative species for the ERA of PPPs, more traits need to be included, such as those directly linked to the likelihood of exposure and those related to reproductive behavior. Considering the negative effects of wetland degradation, various measures have been implemented to restore wetland habitats for aquatic organisms, and their effectiveness levels must be assessed. To reduce the effects of aquaculture on aquatic communities, pen culture facilities, which are widely distributed in Yangtze-connected lakes, were removed in 2018. We surveyed and compared waterbird communities in Caizi Lake during the four months before (2017–2018) and after net pen removal (2021–2022) to evaluate their effect on the diversity and species composition of wintering waterbirds. After net pen removal, the richness and number of individual waterbird species increased, whereas the Shannon–Wiener diversity index did not change because the increase in the bird number throughout the year was mostly associated with a few species. The response of individual numbers of different guilds to the removal of net pens differed. The number of deep-water fish eaters, seed eaters, and tuber feeders increased, whereas that of invertebrate eaters decreased. The species composition also changed, particularly in the northeastern and southwestern parts of the lake. Differences in waterbird communities between the winters of 2017–2018 and 2021–2022 indicated that net pen removal had a positive impact on waterbird communities. Full article

Although fire is a natural phenomenon in the dynamics of some biomes around the world, it can threaten the biodiversity of certain ecosystems. Climate change and the expansion of anthropogenic activities have drastically increased the occurrence of large-scale burnings worldwide. The 2020 fire events in the Pantanal marked a historically unprecedented record, burning an area of approximately 40,000 km2. However, how fires affect the local wildlife has yet to be evaluated. The aim of this study was to investigate the recovery of the avifauna in the Pantanal of Mato Grosso by comparing data selected from a previous study conducted between 2014 and 2016 with data collected in burned areas nine to twelve months after the fire. We compared diversity and community composition, investigated the influence of species trait foraging guild, foraging strata, and body mass on their response to fire, and complemented it with species’ individual responses. Bird richness and Shannon diversity were lower in burned areas, and the composition significantly varied between burned and unburned areas. The species’ response toward burned and unburned areas was significantly mediated by their traits, with smaller, piscivorous, omnivorous, ground and water, and midstory to canopy species being the most sensitive toward the environmental changes caused by the fire. Thirty-three species showed a negative response toward burned areas, but 46 species showed the opposite response, and 24 species were similarly abundant in unburned and burned areas. The present study is the first evaluation of the response of birds to the extreme fire events in the Pantanal and provides valuable insight into the recovery and resilience of local avifauna. Birds contribute to the trophic interactions within mixed conifer ecosystems and provide a suite of services, such as nutrient transport, seed dispersal, habitat creation, and insect regulation. Avian communities vary in response to the structure and composition of their habitat, which may be drastically altered by fire, the predominant disturbance of western mixed conifer forests. We conducted avian point count surveys during the peak breeding season, five years post-fire, across four burn severities (unburned, low, moderate, and high) within the 416 Fire perimeter, a 55,000-acre mixed-severity fire that burned near Durango, Colorado in 2018. Avian communities in each burn severity were evaluated for richness, diversity, differentiation, indicator species, and functional guild composition. Species assemblages were significantly different across all burn severities, excluding the low to moderate areas comparison, with differentiation driven by live tree and snag density. Avian species’ richness and diversity were not significantly different across burn severities, highlighting the importance of utilizing multivariate community analysis. Unburned and high-burn areas had significant variation in functional guilds and numerous indicator species. This study provides evidence of avian community differentiation by burn severity, suggesting that management practices promoting heterogenous stand structure in warm–dry mixed conifer will positively influence avian biodiversity. The species which make up the avian community are governed by a multitude of environmental and internal influences, and the crucial role of community ecology is to discern and explain the patterns arising from these influences. Some such influences are habitat structure and seasonality. This study aimed to investigate the structure of the avian community and population densities of birds in relation to habitat changes made by man, and in relation to differential rainfall. The study was set up in an urbanized riparian forest on the Zambezi River, NE Namibia. The forest close to the river bank has been slightly altered by human activities, while the one laying further afield has been highly modified by human settlements. The avian community was quantified using the mapping method. Counts were conducted in two wet seasons in 2013/14 and 2015/16. The rainfall was higher in the 2013/14 (428 mm) than the 2014/15 (262 mm) rainy season. In both seasons, 113 bird species were recorded. However, in particular, 91 species were recorded in 2013/14 and 101 in 2015/16. The Sorensen Index of Similarity between those two seasons was I = 0.89. Also, the proportion of dominant species was similar in both seasons, and the group was composed of the Dark-capped Bulbul, Red-eyed Dove, Laughing Dove, Blue Waxbill, and Grey-headed Sparrow. The Community Dominance was identical in both seasons when compared. Also, the diversity indices were very similar in both seasons. Also, all three diversity indices were almost identical in both seasons. The overall density was only slightly higher in 2015/16 than in 2013/14. The proportions of particular nesting, feeding, habitat, and residency guilds were very similar in both seasons when compared. The overall density was slightly higher in 2015/16 than in 2013/14, but the difference was not statistically significant. Also, for any particular bird species, the differences in population density between the two seasons were not statistically significant. Several bird species showed, however, statistically significant differences in their population densities between the natural and transformed portions of the riparian forest. The avian assemblage is probably stable over the years in regard to the number of breeding species and their densities, irrespective of year-to-year differences in rainfall, as water is not a limiting factor in this habitat. Bird species classified as forest specialists appear to be negatively affected by habitat transformation, while generalists (ecotone species) probably benefit from this transformation. Full article

The main objective of this study was to assess the influence of surrounding forest and agricultural landscapes on the bird communities within cities. Using the point count method, we collected data and analyzed the species richness and relative abundance of breeding birds. We found differences in the species richness and relative abundance of breeding birds between urbanized areas surrounded by forests and agricultural landscapes. However, both types of landscapes significantly differed in terms of bird community structure. The highest relative abundances of bird species were observed in city forest parks and cities surrounded by forest landscapes, while the lowest abundances were detected in highly urbanized areas. Cities surrounded by forests exhibited an additional nine species compared to other areas. The ecological grouping of species revealed that cities surrounded by forests had higher relative abundances of typical forest species, such as the Great Tit (Parus major), Eurasian Blue Tit (Cyanistes caeruleus), Common Chaffinch (Fringilla coelebs), and European Pied Flycatcher (Ficedula hypoleuca), whereas cities surrounded by agricultural landscapes were characterized by bird communities adapted to open or semi-open landscapes with specific feeding and nesting behaviors. The presence of specialist forest species in the composition of urban bird communities enhances biological diversity, which is crucial for the stability of both urban ecosystems and bird communities. The Guizhou Caohai Wetland plays a crucial role as a wintering site for migratory birds in the Yunnan–Guizhou Plateau and ranks among the largest wintering spots globally for black-necked cranes (Grus nigricollis). To better understand the factors influencing waterbird populations and ecosystem changes, we conducted a comprehensive analysis of historical waterbird population variations over a 30-year period spanning from 1992 to 2022. The current investigation revealed a downward trend in the abundance index curve of the total number of waterbirds during this observation period. Among the five waterbird guilds examined, dabbling ducks, diving ducks, and coots (Fulica atra) experienced declines in their populations, while wading birds and shorebirds saw an increase. Moreover, we observed a rise in species richness within the community over time, accompanied by smaller compositional changes. Additionally, the findings indicated positive growth trends in wintering endangered species such as black-necked cranes and common cranes (Grus grus) in Caohai. Furthermore, we observed an increase in the occurrence and persistence of rare species, such as Eurasian spoonbills (Platalea leucorodia), black-faced spoonbills (Platalea minor), and black storks (Ciconia nigra) wintering in Caohai. These occurrences suggest that the wetland environment provides favorable conditions for a diverse range of species. Despite the rise in species richness, these trends in the abundance and species composition of wintering waterbirds over the past thirty years are still of concern. This study serves as fundamental scientific support for waterbird conservation and the restoration of ecological wetlands in the Guizhou Caohai Wetland. Full article

Scavenging guilds often have several trophic levels with varying dominance and intra-guild predation, competition, and interaction. Apex predators can control subordinate predators by limiting their numbers and affecting behaviour but also supply a continuous food source by abandoning carcasses. Camera traps monitored the scavenger guild in Alpe di Catenaia, Tuscan Apennine, for three years to determine intraguild interactions and the behaviour response. Wild boar visited most feeding sites but only scavenged in 1.4% of their visits. Red fox was the most frequent scavenger, traded vigilance and feeding equally, and selected low vegetation density, while marten invested more in feeding than vigilance. Marten was the prime follower, appearing within the shortest time after another scavenger had left the site. Red fox occasionally looked upwards, possibly to detect birds of prey. Badger showed scarcely any vigilance, did not feed much on carcasses but scent-marked abundantly. Wolves showed the highest vigilance in proportion to feeding at carcasses among the scavengers. Sites with good visibility were selected by all scavengers except martens who selected poor visibility and new moon illumination. Scavengers were mostly nocturnal, showed weak responses to twilight hours or lunar illumination, and all but red fox avoided human disturbance areas. Full article

Bird–forestry relationships have been the subject of research and conservation initiatives for decades, but there are few reviews of resulting recommendations for use by forest managers. We define “bird-friendly forestry” as forest management that applies recommendations from research seeking to reconcile logging with bird conservation in natural forests used for timber production. We reviewed relevant studies to synthesize 10 principles of bird-friendly forestry: (1) protect and enhance vertical structure through uneven-aged silviculture; (2) leave abundant dead wood in different decay stages; (3) maintain residual large green trees; (4) create and maintain sufficient amounts of uncut reserves and corridors; (5) maximize forest interior by retaining large contiguous forest tracts in landscapes with sufficient functional connectivity; (6) maintain buffers along streams, rivers, and wetlands cultural and urban landscapes; (7) maintain horizontal stand structure and enhance vegetation diversity by creating canopy gaps; (8) extend the temporal scale of logging cycles; (9) minimize post-logging disturbance to forests, particularly during the bird breeding season; and (10) manage for focal species and guilds. These principles may serve as guidelines in developing bird-friendly management plans customized for regional priority species, with a clearly articulated vision and quantitative objectives through which success can be measured. The distribution of birds in the tropical mountains is important not only for testing fundamental scientific hypotheses, but also for bird conservation. In order to obtain knowledge on bird community structure within the tropical highland ecosystem, we used ground-to-canopy mist nets to assess bird species distribution along a vertical ground-to-canopy gradient for two elevational bands on Mount Cameroon. The study area included lowland forest (Drink Garri, 650 m a.s.l.) and montane forest (Mann’s Spring, 2200 m a.s.l.). We mist netted a total of 2658 individuals, including recaptures, belonging to 118 species from 50 genera. NLAG (net location above the ground), vegetation cover and locality significantly affected the bird communities. The composition of avian communities strongly differed between the two elevational bands. Species diversity considerably decreased with NLAG in both localities and increased with increased vegetation cover at the low elevation site. Species dietary guilds were significantly influenced by the seasonality, elevation, NLAG and vegetation cover. For most of the feeding guilds included in the study (frugivores, omnivores, insectivores, granivores and nectarivores), we found a negative correlation between the abundances and vegetation cover. Meanwhile, percentages of abundance of frugivores, nectarivores and omnivores showed a positive correlation with NLAG. We discuss the substantial changes in feeding guild structure along a vertical gradient and between two elevational bands. In conclusion, Mount Cameroon’s forest vegetation structure differs between two elevational bands and along vertical gradients from ground to canopy, considerably affecting the bird community structure. Kalametiya Lagoon, a highly threatened Sri Lankan wetland, has undergone drastic hydrological changes in recent decades, due to an upstream irrigation project. These changes led to the invasion of the lagoon water by monospecific Sonneratia caseolaris mangrove stands and Typha angustifolia reedbeds. As Kalametiya has been a nationally recognized bird sanctuary since 1984, this invasion is expected to have brought significant changes upon local avifauna. Therefore, this study aimed at determining the lagoon’s current bird diversity and distribution in relation with habitat types and environmental variables. Thirty-seven point-count stations were studied, between January and April 2022. Seventy-nine bird species, including four endemic and ten nationally threatened species, were encountered during the study period. Invertebrate feeders and polyphages were the richest and most diverse guilds. Bird communities were also found richer and more diverse in T. angustifolia reedbeds than in S. caseolaris mangroves. As feeding guild composition was significantly influenced by several environmental variables (i.e., water nitrate content, water TDS, water pH, soil pH), guilds could have great potential as bioindicators of the ecosystem if further studies are done to explore these relationships. Considering the important bird diversity found in the new habitats, this research brings additional proof that a management aiming at restoring the lagoon to its past state would bring significant changes to its avifaunal community. These changes could, in the future, be more precisely defined by a thorough comparison with past inventories of the lagoon’s bird community. Full article

Shade coffee farms in southwest Ethiopia are known to host high levels of avian biodiversity. However, these farms vary in terms of forest management, which affects their understory, mid-story, crown cover, and canopy closure, and hence their structural complexity. Such differences in vegetation structure can potentially affect the survival of specialist bird species, and shade coffee farms may not equally contribute to avian biodiversity conservation. This study aimed to investigate how avian community composition, richness, and the relative abundance of different bird functional guilds relate to structural differences in vegetation shaped by forest management. Bird guild classification was based on bird species forest dependence, diet type, migration status, nest type, foraging, and nesting strata, and bird communities were surveyed using the Timed Species Counts (TSCs) method. Species turnover in bird communities was evaluated using detrended correspondence analysis and redundancy analysis, whereby multiple regression models were used to examine bird guild responses to vegetation structure. Total bird species richness and relative abundance did not respond to vegetation structure. However, the richness of forest specialists and understory foragers, and the relative abundance of mid-high foragers, all positively related to tree diameter at breast height (DBH) and crown cover, whereas the relative abundance of species with medium levels of forest dependency, mid-high/canopy foragers, and open-nesters were positively related to basal area and canopy cover. This study demonstrates that the relative value of shade coffee farms for avian biodiversity conservation depends on the type of forest management, and that bigger trees with larger crown cover provide a habitat of higher quality to habitat specialist birds. Temporal changes in the bird community of an agricultural landscape in northeast Germany were analysed covering three different analytical foci (landscape-wide, habitat types, sample plots) and two aggregation levels of bird observation data (whole bird community, bird guilds). The analyses are based on a systematic data sampling over two multi-year campaigns (1999–2002; 2013–2015). Our analyses address the question of how changes in the occurrences of agricultural birds (numbers of species and of individuals) at local spots manifest themselves in the landscape as a whole. By summarizing all findings concerning single variables (number of species, observation frequencies, abundances, different habitat types, bird guilds), a dramatic, systematic decline of the bird community at sample plots was discovered between the campaigns, which is not yet recognisable across the whole landscape in terms of species richness. Furthermore, we found that landscape-wide, the birds’ use of habitat changed; the variability between single sample plots increased strongly and most species occurred at fewer sample plots over the whole landscape. Obviously, sample plots with high bird occurrences are becoming more relevant for maintaining bird communities over the whole landscape. Bird Assemblages in a Peri-Urban Landscape in Eastern India

Urbanization plays an important role in biodiversity loss across the globe due to natural habitat loss in the form of landscape conversion and habitat fragmentation on which species depend. To study the bird diversity in the peri-urban landscape, we surveyed four habitats—residential areas, cropland, water bodies, and sal forest; three seasons—monsoon, winter, and summer in Baripada, Odisha, India. We surveyed from February 2018 to January 2019 using point counts set along line transects; 8 transects were established with a replication of 18 each. During the survey, 6963 individuals of 117 bird species belonged to 48 families and 98 genera in the study area, whereas cropland showed rich avian diversity. Based on the non-parametric multidimensional scale (NMDS) and one-way ANOVA, bird richness and abundance differed significantly among the habitats. Cropland showed higher species richness than other habitats; however, water bodies showed more abundance than others. The similarity of bird assemblage was greater between residential areas and cropland than forest and water bodies based on similarity indices. Among seasons, we observed the highest bird species richness in winter and the highest similarity of species richness in monsoon and summer. In conclusion, our study reported that agricultural and degraded landscapes like cropland play important roles in conserving bird diversity in peri-urban landscapes. Our findings highlighted and identified the problems that affect the local biodiversity (e.g., birds) in the peri-urban landscape. It can assist the local government in urban planning and habitat management without affecting the local biodiversity, including birds. Full article

The loss of biodiversity is shaping today’s environment. Bird ringing is a citizen science research tool that can determine species population dynamics and trends over a large geographic area. We used a 17-year time series to assess population trends of 74 passerine species based on ringing data from autumn migration in Slovenia (south-central Europe). We defined seven guilds of species according to geographic location, ecological, migratory, breeding, and life-history traits. Almost all guilds showed declining trends, except for the group of species of northeastern European origin, which showed a stable trend. The greatest decline was in low-productivity wetland specialists. Forest birds, seed-eaters, and high-productivity species experienced the smallest declines. The general declines in avifauna across a range of life-history and behavioural traits, and across a range of spatial and ecological scales, suggest widespread environmental change in Europe. Our data indicates that recent trends are toward ecosystem homogeneity, with an impoverished avifauna, including a few species that are increasing in abundance. These are the species with higher productivity and flexible behaviour, such as short-distance migrants, that have the greatest chance of prevailing in the recently rapidly changing environment because of their ability to adapt to changes in a timely manner.
