Law students

Licensing process prerequisites

Law students are required to graduate from a common law program offered by a law school in Canada that is approved by Convocation.

Upon successful completion of an approved common law program, candidates will be awarded either a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) or a Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree. The common law program typically spans a minimum of three academic years in most accredited law schools.

All law students interested in practising law in Ontario must apply to be registered in the Law Society of Ontario’s lawyer licensing process. Individuals must submit an online application via LSO Connects. Review the Application process page for more information.
