Migrants' decision to migrate to #Libya is influenced by job opportunities and attractive wages, but harsh working and living conditions and an unstable labor market tend to disappoint their expectations. 🔹 77% of our respondents made money while in Libya, and 61% of this group were able to find a job within one month of arriving in the country. 🔹 Two-thirds secured employment with the assistance of co-national networks or other migrants. 🔹The majority had received information about job opportunities in the Libyan labour market prior to their departure, mostly from relatives or friends currently (39%) or previously (41%) in Libya. 🔗 Read our report with Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung here:

🇲🇷 Migrants are abandoned in desert areas in Mauritania An investigation by Lighthouse reports reveals that #migrants were systematically abandoned in desert areas in #Mauritania. The investigation also uncovers that Spanish authorities supported Mauritania with sea interceptions by funding equipment and training personnel, as well as providing vehicles used for migrant deportations. ℹ️ Since 2012, tens of thousands of Malians have fled to Mauritania for safety due to instability and violence in their country. The recent increase of insecurity in Mali in 2024 has led thousands more Malians and Mauritanians to seek refuge in Mauritania. 🇦🇫 Afghan women must not be forgotten Since August 2021, the migration dynamics of Afghan women are changing, with more women compelled to leave Afghanistan. Research by MMC found that women are increasingly reporting a lack of access to rights and freedoms among the top three reasons for leaving the country. They are also experiencing higher levels of sexual and gender-based discrimination compared to before the Taliban takeover. 📣 The evolving landscape of Afghan women's migration underscores an urgent need for international action to ensure the safety and dignity of Afghan women and uphold the principles of justice and equality. The recent #EUelection results will have a direct impact on mixed migration in Europe. "With the right and far-right having strengthened their political positions and some in leadership roles across Europe, it would be fair to expect that their influence and the subsequent normalising of the extreme in relation to immigration and asylum are set to be further consolidated," write Christopher Horwood and Roberto Forin.
