📣 Just out: new joint UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, IOM - UN Migration  & MMC report on #MixedMigration routes through Africa towards Europe - based on 31,000 4Mi interviews with refugees & migrants by MMC & data from UNHCR & IOM - points to ongoing unacceptable & extreme violence towards people on the move. This report is a new iteration of a joint UNHCR and MMC report issued in 2020 covering the period 2018–2019. In the complex landscape of #migration, this second volume of the report 'On This Journey, No One Cares if You Live or Die' emerges as a crucial body of work that sheds light on the stark realities faced by #migrants traversing the perilous Central Mediterranean Route (CMR) all the way from East and Horn of Africa and West Africa to the North African coast of the #Mediterranean and across the sea. It aims to inform increased and concrete routes-based protection responses to reduce the suffering associated with the desperate journeys migrants undertake, and a call to action to address the root causes of displacement and drivers of irregular migration. 📱 Social media platforms are increasingly seen as valuable tools for studying the dynamic phenomenon of #migration. Our latest paper explores how people on the move through Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) use #SocialMedia. More precisely, it investigates the use of Facebook, examining posts from 2022 and 2023 from eight public Facebook groups created to exchange information on northward migration in LAC. Key findings include:  🔹 Almost a quarter of the posts collected for this study (21.5%) were entries from migrant smugglers and other actors offering services in countries within the region or to reach the United States.  🔹 Most of the analyzed posts showed that migrant populations face a widespread lack of information about regularization processes, migratory transit, routes, costs, access to services, and the updating of migratory policies, among other topics. 🔹 In the studied Facebook groups, there was an absence of posts by non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and national and local authorities regarding information needed and sought by people on the move. ⬇️ Discover more about the online communities from LAC to North America.  ______________________________ 📱 Las redes sociales cada vez más se consideran como herramientas valiosas para estudiar el fenómeno dinámico de la #migración. 📝 In this article, Statewatch takes a closer look at the activities of #Civipol, a French public-private actor owned both by the French state and major security companies, that has specialised in building African states’ internal security capacity. Current European attempts to outsource migration control to West Africa mirror historical entanglements between colonial logics, corporate interests and policing.   The article looks at the place of public-private relations in French #colonialism in order to historically situate the activities of Civipol. Putting the involvement in a wider political perspective, the authors argue that the blurring between public and private interests in contemporary European mobility policing in Africa constitutes a colonial continuity 

🔎 Recent Research and Reports on Latin America and the Caribbean:  🔸 Report by the Migration Policy Institute examines the history of the U.S. federal government’s efforts to strengthen southwest border security in the modern era, and identifies key developments in the evolution of #U.S.-Mexico border security, including the changing origins and characteristics of migrants arriving at the border. https://lnkd.in/gnTCfmH3   🔸 The World Bank Group’s Longitudinal Survey of Forced Migrant Children from Venezuela aims at addressing the lack of longitudinal data and information on the human development status of #children. https://lnkd.in/ggjpnuXe   🔸 Report by the Women's Refugee Commission shows that the Trump administration’s family separation policy remains a lasting and disgraceful legacy of that administration. Under the “Zero Tolerance” policy, the U.S. government forcibly separated migrant children from their parents as a deliberate measure to deter others from attempting to migrate or seek asylum.

🔎 Recent Research and Reports on Eastern and Southern Africa:    Based on quantitative and qualitative data collection with returning migrants in Ethiopia, Somalia and Sudan in 2021-22, this IOM - UN Migration study examines migration, #return and reintegration experiences from a #MentalHealth perspective to further inform policy and programming on sustainable reintegration approaches. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/gx-igeWz       South Africa’s National Stats department, Statistics South Africa, published its first iteration of a new initiative to provide a migration profile for the country. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/gD7U78wH    A study from Strategies for Northern Development focuses on child trafficking and irregular migration among pastoralists moving between Kenya and Ethiopia. 🔗

📝 Our new paper explores the #educational realities and needs of migrant children and #youth in West and North Africa. The study is based on a quantitative analysis through interviews with youth and migrants traveling with children. Key findings include:  🏫 Access to education for migrant children in the four cities of interview is limited 💭 Educational aspirations only play a minor role in migration decision-making among youth respondents compared to economic factors 👩👦👦 Access to formal or informal education is the most frequent need expressed by caregivers for the children in their care (29%) 🎓 The probability of using regular migration pathways rises with higher education levels. Cette étude est basée sur une analyse quantitative à travers des entretiens avec des jeunes migrant∙e∙s et des migrant∙e∙s voyageant avec des enfants. Les principales conclusions incluent :  🏫 L’accès à l’éducation pour les enfants migrant∙e∙s dans les quatre villes d’entretien est limité 💭 Les aspirations en matière d’éducation ne jouent qu’un rôle mineur dans la prise de décision en matière de migration parmi les jeunes interrogé∙e∙s, contrairement aux facteurs économiques 👩👦👦 L’accès à une éducation formelle ou informelle arrive en tête des besoins exprimés par les accompagnant∙e∙s pour les enfants dont ils/elles ont la charge avec 29% d’entre eux/elles qui expriment ce besoin 🎓 La probabilité d’utiliser des voies de migration régulières augmente avec le niveau d’éducation. 🔎 Research reports and migration outlook in Europe:   🔷 Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) published a report of their two years working in the #Belarus-Poland border area, describing it as an acute humanitarian crisis and assisting at least 2,000 people before or after they had attempted to cross the Belarus-EU border. https://lnkd.in/guU53Tnv  🔷 IOM - UN Migration report explores the need for enhanced coherence between migration and #climate action policy within the European Union’s internal and external policy. Its core argument is that this should be a priority in the context of the envisaged green transition in the European Union. https://lnkd.in/gFP3KnDi   🔷 International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD) report uses ten selected #migration issues to look out for in 2024 - in a year full of European, national, and regional elections, the International Centre for Migration Policy Development expects migration to be a pivotal topic.
