Some have called Afghanistan 'the graveyard of empires,' and it probably is the graveyard of empires! 'Women need a seat at the table, Especially the Afghan Women. they need an invitation to be seated there, and in some cases, where this is not available, they need to create their own table. We need a global understanding that we cannot implement change effectively without women's Political, Economic participation.' Political- Increasing women's political participation and leadership are vital mechanisms that support women to realize their human rights. Increasing women's participation in leadership and decision- making has proven to be good for economic and social development around the world. Economic- Women's economic empowerment includes women's ability to participate equally in existing markets; their access to and control over productive resources, access to decent work, control over their own time, lives and bodies; and increased voice, agency and meaningful participation in economic decision-making at all! It being guided by the components of the social empowerment of women!,- Women's sense of self-worth; their right to have and to determine choices; their right to have access to opportunities and resources; their right to have power to control their own lives, both within and outside the home; and their ability to influence the direction of social. Ps; As Michelle Obama once said, "There is no limit to what Women, can accomplish." And With liberty and justice for all. Women's rights are human rights. Women hold up half the sky. Every quarter, UN Women, IOM - UN Migration, and UNAMA continue to ask Afghan women what they hope, what they fear, and how decision-makers can support them. Our latest report, reflecting the voices of 745 women across all 34 provinces, reveals: 🔺 The majority of Afghan women say no recognition of the Taliban without reversal of restrictions and bans on women and girls’ rights. 🔺 57% of women felt unsafe leaving the house without a mahram. In particular, risks to their security and their anxiety levels worsened whenever a new decree was announced specifically targeting them. 🔻 Only 1% of women indicated that they had “good” or “full” influence on decision-making at the community level – a steady decrease from 17% in January 2023. 🔻 Women’s self-reported “good” or “full” influence on household decision-making has drastically decreased from 90% in January 2023 to 32% in January 2024. Despite these restrictions, Afghan women have not given up fighting for their right to live full lives, equal in dignity. Their asks of the international community are clear: we must find ways to ensure their active involvement and representation in all interactions and dialogues discussing Afghanistan’s future. On July 10, 2024, the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) released a comprehensive report detailing significant human rights violations caused by the Taliban’s “moral oversight.” The report underscores the negative impact of policies implemented by the de facto Ministry for the Propagation of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice (MPVPV) on the fundamental freedoms of Afghans, with women being disproportionately affected. Key Findings: - Women’s Rights: Severe restrictions on women’s sexual and reproductive health, work opportunities, and access to contraception. Female-run businesses faced arbitrary closures. - Policy Enforcement: Inconsistencies and ambiguities in the MPVPV’s policies, along with unpredictable and severe punishments, contribute to a climate of fear and intimidation. - Lack of Accountability: Efforts to discipline ministry personnel have been hindered by the lack of accountability. Ongoing UN Efforts: This report is part of a series by the UN to monitor human rights under Taliban governance since they gained control of Afghanistan in August 2021. Previous inquiries covered abuses against detainees, violence against women and girls, and violations against former government and armed forces members. International Response: On June 30, 2024, UN-organized talks in Doha, Qatar, marked the first time the Taliban participated. However, the exclusion of women from the meeting sparked outrage from human rights activists and NGOs. A coalition, including Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, urged the UN to ensure women's rights are a permanent agenda item in all future discussions. Human trafficking has been a problem for a long time. Most of the victims—about 71%—are women and girls who suffer from sexual exploitation. Additionally, almost 20% of trafficking victims are children. In certain regions like Sub-Saharan Africa and Central America, children make up an even larger percentage—up to 62% and 64%, respectively. Refugee women and children are at greater risk of human trafficking and gender-based violence than other population groups. Traffickers take advantage of their vulnerability by making deceptive promises of safety and protection, ultimately trapping them in exploitative situations. For more than two years, the Taliban's restrictions on girls' education and women's employment in Afghanistan have posed significant challenges. In 2024, gender bias remains a pressing issue, reaching concerning levels where women face being marginalized in societies specially in Afghanistan . It's crucial to address this matter with utmost seriousness, acknowledging that the 2.5 million Afghan women who are currently living in Afghanistan like prisoners with no rights aren't merely statistics – they are mothers, sisters, and wives . 🔵 Urgent Call for Action: Insights from UN Women's Report on Afghan Women's Rights In a powerful collaboration between UN Women, the International Organization for Migration (IOM), and the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), a comprehensive report sheds light on the alarming situation of women in Afghanistan post-Taliban takeover in August 2021. Engaging with 745 women across Afghanistan's 34 provinces, this initiative aims to voice the dire circumstances and critical perspectives of Afghan women. 📌 Key Insights: 1:A significant majority of Afghan women express deep concern over the potential international recognition of the Taliban, fearing it would further compromise women's rights. 2:Enforcement of the hijab decree has escalated harassment and limited women's mobility, contributing to a climate of fear and repression. 3:Women's influence on community decision-making has alarmingly diminished, highlighting a systemic exclusion from public life. The report also underscores the negative intergenerational impacts of current policies on children, particularly affecting their perceptions and values towards gender roles. 📌 Recommendations for the International Community: 1:Conditional recognition of the Taliban, emphasizing the reversal of restrictions on women and girls as a prerequisite. 2:Linking international aid to the improvement of women's conditions and facilitating direct dialogues between Afghan women and the Taliban. This report is a clarion call to the international community to prioritize the voices and rights of Afghan women in any engagement related to Afghanistan's future. The findings and recommendations emphasize the need for inclusive governance and sustained advocacy to ensure that Afghan women are not only heard but actively involved in decision-making processes.
