Filipino Scientists and Inventors - Significant Contribution To Phil.
Make a research on the following Filipino scientists and inventors and give their
most significant contribution to Philippine nation-building.
1. Paulo Campos - Campos was also known for establishing the first and best
known Radioisotope Laboratory in the country, the first Research Laboratory in
UP's Department of Medicine, and the Thyroid Clinic of the UP-Philippine
General Hospital (PGH) Medical Center.
2. Angel Alcala - Along with his many other accomplishments, Angel Alcala's work
has led to the discovery of 50 new species of reptiles and amphibians. In other
words, more than 10 percent of all reptiles and amphibians in the Philippines
are known today because of Alcala's work.
3. Agapito Flores - It has been reported that Agapito Flores received a French
patent for a fluorescent bulb and that the General Electric Company bought
Flores' patent rights and manufactured and sold his fluorescent bulb (making
millions from it).
4. Maria Ligaya Braganza - Maria Ligaya T. Braganza, Ed. D, the Dean of the
School of Food Science and Technology at the Philippine Women's University
conducts applied researches on food and product development. One of her
studies investigates the use of banana flour as a wheat flour extender in pan de
sal and doughnuts.
5. Baldomero Olivera - His early research contributions include the discovery and
biochemical characterization of E. coli DNA ligase, a key enzyme of DNA
replication and repair that is widely used in recombinant DNA technology. He is
presently a Distinguished Professor of Biology at the University of Utah.
6. Dioscoro Umali - Umali specialized in the breeding of rice, corn, abaca and
mussaenda. His research output and writings paved the way for the launching of
programs of rainfed and upland agriculture, social forestry, environment
conservation and rural poverty.
11. Julian Banzon - Banzon gained recognition for his notable researches on the
Philippine coconut and other indigenous materials as “renewable sources of
chemicals and fuels.” He pioneered in the study not just of the coconut, but also
of the sugar cane, in the Philippines, and produced the first authoritative work
on the derivation
13. Juan Salcedo Jr. - Salcedo contributed immensely to the areas of biochemistry,
nutrition, physiology. As science administrator to science policy development,
science promotion and scientific manpower development, he has published 265
works and researches in Philippine and foreign science journals.
14. Raymundo Punongbayan - Raymundo Punongbayan, Director of the Philippine
Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, for his exceptional research knowledge
and skills in mitigating natural hazards involving volcanoes and earthquakes,
and in helping to save thousands of lives during the explosive eruption of Mount
Pinatubo in 1991.
15. Gavino Trono - Trono was instrumental to the development of degree programs
in the marine and biological sciences, mentoring graduate students, and in
promoting seaweed research and sound coastal resources management.
He established the largest phycological herbarium in the country — the G.T.
16. Proceso Alcala - He is one of the principal authors of the Organic Agriculture
Act of 2010 (RA 10068) and Mounts Banahaw-San Cristobal Protected
Landscape Act (RA 2718). He was also a co-author of the Climate Change Act
(RA 9729) and the Expanded Senior Citizens Act (RA 9994).
17. Alfredo Galang - Alfredo Santos Buenaventura was born in Santa Maria,
Bulacan in 1929 and studied music at the University of Santo Tomas, the Centro
Escolar University and the Gregorian Institute. His career brought him teaching
appointments at the Philippine Women’s University, St. Scholastica’s College
and at the Centro Escolar University, where he became Dean of Music at the
conservatory. He was formerly organist at the Metropolitan Cathedral in Manila
and, among many other honours, received the Republican Cultural Heritage
Awards in 1964 and 1972 and the Bonifacio Centennial Awards.
18. Benito Lumen - Professor Benito de Lumen has recently been elected as a Fellow
of the American Association for the Advancement in Science for his important
contributions to natural products biochemistry, with special regard to
the discovery of lunasin, a cancer preventative from seeds of common crop
plants.

II. What are the critical points in the history of science and technology in the
Philippines and how these developments affected the society and the environment?
- Science and technology in the Philippines describes scientific and technological
progress made by the Philippines and analyses related policy issues. The main
agency responsible for managing science and technology (S&T) is
the Department of Science and Technology (DOST). There are also sectoral
councils for Forestry, Agriculture and Aquaculture, the Metal Industry,
Nuclear Research, Food and Nutrition, Health, Meteorology, Volcanology and
Seismology.
III. What is the role of Science and Technology in nation-building?
- Science and Technology hold the key to the progress and development of any
nation. Technology plays a Fundamental role in wealth creation, improvement
of the quality of life and real economic growth and transformation in any
society.
IV. Identify several issues in the Philippines. What science and technology-related
policies could be developed and implemented to solve the issues?
- The Philippines is polluted because the people do not care. As a contrast look at
Japan, which is an island nation with few resources. They keep their country
clean as a part of their culture. Trash is sorted out in multiple recycling bins
depending on type. What is not recycled is disposed of properly. The final waste
is incinerated or used to fill in the ocean and create more land. In the
Philippines trash is thrown on the ground. Where is ultimately washes into the
ocean. No new technology is needed to tackle this problem. It needs to be a
nationwide culture shift to care about keeping the Philippines clean.
