William Nelson Joy argues that future technologies like genetics, nanotechnology and robotics (GNR) may harm humanity if they are not properly controlled. He believes these technologies could become so advanced that humans are dictated by or dependent on them. Joy also thinks computers may become smarter than humans and spread of diseases will be hard to contain. The document stresses the importance of humans visualizing possible futures, so societies can prepare for challenges and build a progressive future that is safe for humanity.

ARANDA DAYS/TIME:

BLOCK/YEAR: BSED-FILIPINO 2D ROOM:

ACTIVITY 6

1. Identify William Nelson Joy’s argument as to why the future does not need
us?
- According to William Nelson Joy, the reason why the future doesn’t need us is
that knowledge of humans about creating new technologies including
genetics, nanotechnologies and robotics (GNR) will potentially brought harm
to the humanity. These new technologies that arise in this time will be much
harmful that we cannot be able to control their functions in the future. There
might be a time comes that we will be dictated by these technologies and we
our life will be dependent on it. Joy also furthered that the rise of computer
may also become a threat into us. We will become more dependent to the
computer, thus, there will comes a time that computer will be even wiser than
human. Moreover, the possibilities of spreading a more dangerous strain of
bacteria and viruses will be happening unexpectedly and it will be hard for the
human to fight it.

2. What do you think are the importance of humankind in visualizing future?

- Visualizing the possible outcomes of the future by human is very important. If
we have the proper and right visualization, we can be able to prepare and
ready for some or whatever might happen especially in the future. The
importance of visualizing the future is to build a strong foundation that will
bring a more progressive yet, eco-friendly society. In this way, we can have
the assurance that there will be no more danger to the humanity in the future.
We can have the confidence that our world will not soon to end in because of
the rise of destructive technologies.
