Hi, A reference to an object is actually a pointer, which is a number (to which we have attached a special meaning) Testing this reference tests the pointer with 0, or NULL. I think you will find that << returns NULL if it fails. HTH, Jonathan On 11/1/07, A D <a_...@ho...> wrote: > > > Hi! Hi! I'm trying to learn c++ and stumbled upon part of a code which I'm havi= ng difficulties to understand: class BadConversion : public std::runtime_error { public: BadConversion(const std::string& s) : std::runtime_error(s) { } }; =20 inline std::string stringify(double x) { std::ostringstream o; if (!(o << x)) throw BadConversion("stringify(double)"); return o.str(); } the function stringify() converts a double number to string And returns the= string.=20 I'm having problem with the following line: if (!(o << x)) //<-----------------------------------problem=20 throw BadConversion("stringify(double)"); according to the api ostringstream is a typedef of basic_ostringstream clas= s. This insertion (< basic_ostream&=20 basic_ostream::operator<put(*this, *this, this->fill(), __n).failed()) this->setstate(ios_base::badbit); } catch(...) { // 27.6.1.2.1 Common requirements. // Turn this on without causing an ios::failure to be thrown. this->_M_setstate(ios_base::badbit); if ((this->exceptions() & ios_base::badbit) !=3D 0) __throw_exception_again; } } return *this; } You can clearly see from the definition that binary operator "<<" outputs = an=20 object of basic_ostream reference type. My question is can the operator <<= =20 return a zero in this case? Because by definition this operator clearly ret= urns a=20 reference object of type basic_ostream&. If it returns zero(which is teste= d in=20 order for a exception to be thrown in the former code shown above), shouldn= 't=20 it contradict the fact that this operator can only return an object not a n= umber?=20 Thanks. _________________________________________________________________ Express yourself with free Messenger emoticons. Hello. I intend to use Dev-Cpp for Win32 programming but I've got two problem with DEV-CPP. 1) I have a problem compiling programs I specify as c programs 2) I can't seem to get any resources added to my projects. Hold your horses. Don't make life so complicated! We are not talking about self-modifying code, or trying to execute code from data or stack segments. M$ Windoze do close console applications as soon as they end - unless they are started from a command line. M$ own tools have a workaround built-in for this case. Dev-C++-generated console applications needs their own workaround. /pwm On Tue, 30 Oct 2007, seb_kramm wrote: > Perhaps some kind of DEP problem ? > > http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Data_Execution_Prevention > > Quote: > "In some instances, Data Execution Prevention can have the unintended con= sequence of > preventing legitimate software from executing. I believe the problem to be the way that DevC++ tries to execute external things. I know that a lot of junk changed in Vista with regards to application access controls, so it might be running into a UAC block. Just a theory, I don't own Vista and only beta tested it for a few weeks, and never with DevC++. YMMV. Have you tested with a simple hello-world application? Right now, all we know is that you have a file text.cpp and that you don't get any errors when generating the test.exe. Then you say that test.exe doesn't run. What does it say when you try to run it? Find the executable and run it using the Windows DOS prompt. That should tell you some more detailed things about exactly why it's misbehaving. If you don't remember DOS, a little tiny primer: DIR = shows contents of current directory CD = change directory I forgot how to run stuff in DOS... haven't used it in a while :) On 10/29/07, Benson Mwangi <ben...@gm...> wrote: > Hello, > > Is there anyone who would come in handy to help me diagnose whatever is > happening to my Dev C++ compilation. > > I am running on a windows Vista platfrom (which really sacks)! Hi, I agree with Per Westermark. Dev-c++ is based on MinGW. It is not easy to put MFC into MinGW. By the way, VC++ Expression is not a free software if used on commercial software. It doesn't have resource editor/compiler, and even don't support resource file as I known. Thanks for your replies. There are problems trying to build MFC application susing Dev-C++, and it doesn't matter if you call Dev-C++ an IDE or not. An MFC application requires MFC header files. They are not distributed with Dev-C++. MFC is a c++ application framework. C++ compilers does not like to use other C++ compilers libraries, because the layout of C++ objects, the calling conventions, the name mangling etc are not the same. Recompiling the MFC library with a different compiler requires the MFC source - but that is only supplied with some Visual C++ licenses, and if you have a M$ license that incorporates the MFC source, then the interest in using Dev-C++ for MFC work is not too big. The Dev-C++ IDE could be used with the Visual C++ Express compiler, but I don't think too many people would consider that a viable option - especially since Visual C++ already comes with a working IDE. On the other hand: people shouldn't really start any new projects using Dev-C++. Dev-C++ is dead and Code:Blocks is a very much better choice of IDE. It does directly support a number of freely available compilers. /pwm On Fri, 26 Oct 2007, seb_kramm wrote: > Jessica Chen a =E9crit : > > hi, thanks for your reply. > > i agree that win32 api is not the best way. > > but it seem i cannot use MFC in Dev-C++, so i have to use win32 api. > > Of course you can... I'll say it again : DevCpp IS JUST AN IDE ! Then, I agree it might be harder than using MS VC...But who want's to use MFC, anyway? > i got another way to do controls in Dev-c++ -- "RAD", pls read as follow. > but the problem is: it is not easy to invoke other functions in the project. > WxWigets(http://www.wxwidgets.org) and RadCpp (http://www.radcpp.com). Hi all, I'm a newbie and I do hope not to annoy you with a known topic. I'm trying to learn QT using dev-CPP, but when I compile some of the examples of the tutorial (all the code examples containing Q_OBJECT macro), the following message appears: " [Linker error] undefined reference to `vtable for MyWidget' " I have windows XP, Dev-CPP vers 4.9.9.2, QT ver 4.3.1 and I use the attached template. Thanks a lot for any suggestion Kind Regards Federico -- Email.it, the professional e-mail, gratis per te: http://www.email.it/f Sponsor: Problemi di Liquidità? As said before, DevCpp is only an IDE. What you can do depends on the compiler behind, GCC by default. And yes, the ressource compiler provided with Devcpp can handle sliders. See http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb760145.aspx and http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa381043.aspx A typical line in your ressource .rc file should look like: CONTROL "Slider1", IDC_SLIDER1, "msctls_trackbar32", TBS_HORZ | TBS_BOTTOM | TBS_AUTOTICKS | WS_TABSTOP, 100, 80, 60,12 Of course, as stated before, win32 api is probably not the best choice... |

Look for wxWidgets for a general-purpose, platform-independent solution. /pwm On Wed, 24 Oct 2007, Jessica Chen wrote: > Hi, > > Does anyone have the experience of design slider control in Dev-C++? > It seems I can only find MFC ways to do so. Dev-C++ cannot invoke MFC? > > Thanks, > Jessica > |
