Shrinking of bumps by drawing scintillating fibres through a hot conical tool / Rodrigues Cavalcante, Ana Barbara (CBPF - Brazilian Center for Physics Research (BR)) ; Garnier, Francois (CERN) ; Gavardi, Laura (Technische Universitaet Dortmund (DE)) ; Joram, Christian (CERN) ; Kristic, Robert (CERN) ; Pierschel, Gerhard (Rheinisch-Westfaelische Tech. Hoch. (DE)) ; Schneider, Thomas (CERN)
The LHCb SciFi tracker will be based on scintillating fibres with a nominal diameter of 250 $\mu$m. A small length fraction of these fibres shows millimetre-scale fluctuations of the diameter, also known as bumps and necks. [...]

Quality of scintillating fibres after hot bump shrinking / Rodrigues Cavalcante, Ana Barbara (CBPF - Brazilian Center for Physics Research (BR)) ; Gavardi, Laura (Technische Universitaet Dortmund (DE)) ; Joram, Christian (CERN)
Shrinking the diameter of fibre bumps by a hot drawing tool requires to run the fibre through the hot tool over its full length, bearing the risk of a degradation of the fibre performance. In this study we demonstrated that the hot bump shrinking method has no visible effect on the optical attenuation length, the light yield following ionising radiation, the diameter, the mechanical stability and the integrity of the cladding. [...]

The use of scintillating plastic fibres in the SciFi tracker requires rigorous quality control. The fibre diameter and in particular local variations in form of bumps and necks have an impact on the regularity of the winding pattern and hence the spatial resolution. [...]

Irradiation of a 2.5 m long SciFi module with 24 GeV/c protons to the dose profile expected in LHCb / Rodrigues Cavalcante, Ana Barbara (CBPF - Brazilian Center for Physics Research (BR)) ; Gavardi, Laura (Technische Universitaet Dortmund (DE)) ; Glaser, Maurice (CERN) ; Joram, Christian (CERN) ; Karacson, Matthias (CERN) ; Kristic, Robert (CERN) ; Ravotti, Federico (CERN) ; Riggaz, Nicolas (CERN)
A 2.5 m long and 13 cm wide SciFi module, made of a 6-layer single fibre mat, was irradiated with 24 GeV/c protons in the new CERN PS IRRAD facility. The module is equipped with an aluminised mylar mirror and was previously carefully characterised in a test beam experiment in the CERN H8 zone. [...]

Measurements of the Minimum Bending Radius of Small Diameter Scintillating Plastic Fibres / Gruber, Lukas (CERN) ; Joram, Christian (CERN) ; Vaananen, Mika Petteri (University of Helsinki (FI)) ; Gavardi, Laura (Technische Universitaet Dortmund (DE))
The minimum bending radius of plastic fibres is an important parameter as it determines the geometrical flexibility of the fibres during long-term storage or installation and usage inside detectors. The following document describes measurements of the minimum bending radius of round scintillating plastic fibres with small diameter performed in the context of the LHCb SciFi Tracker project. [...]

The optical mirrors at the inner ends of the SciFi fibre modules in the upgraded LHCb detector will be exposed to an ionising dose reaching 35 kGy for an integrated luminosity of 50 /fb. This note describes a campaign at the cyclotron at KIT where 7 different samples were irradiated with 23 MeV protons. [...]
