Remote Estimation of Collimator Jaw Damages With Sounds Measurements During Beam Impacts / Deboy, D (CERN) ; Assmann, RW (CERN) ; Aberle, O (CERN) ; Carra, F (CERN) ; Cauchi, M (CERN) ; Lendaro, J (CERN) ; Masi, A (CERN) ; Redaelli, S (CERN)
Irregular hits of high-intensity LHC beams on collimators can lead to severe damage of the collimator jaws. The identification of damaged collimator jaws by observation of beam measurements is challenging: online loss measurements at the moment of the impacts can be tricky and degradation of the overall performance from single collimator damage can be difficult to measure. Design, construction, and beam tests of a rotatable collimator prototype for high-intensity and high-energy hadron accelerators / Markiewicz, T (SLAC) ; Bong, E (SLAC) ; Keller, L (SLAC) ; Smith, J (SLAC) ; Aberle, O (CERN) ; Accettura, C (CERN) ; Bertarelli, A (CERN) ; Berthome, E (CERN) ; Biancacci, N (CERN) ; Butcher, M (CERN) et al.
A rotatable-jaw collimator design was conceived as a solution to recover from catastrophic beam impacts which would damage a collimator at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) or its High-Luminosity upgrade (HL-LHC). One such rotatable collimator prototype was designed and built at SLAC and delivered to CERN for tests with LHC-type circulating beams in the Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS). [...]

At present, the beam-based alignment of the LHC collimators is performed by touching the beam halo with both jaws of each collimator. This method requires dedicated fills at low intensities that are done infrequently and makes this procedure time consuming. [...]

Thermomechanical assessment of the effects of a jaw-beam angle during beam impact on Large Hadron Collider collimators / Cauchi, Marija (CERN ; Malta U.) ; Assmann, R  W (CERN) ; Bertarelli, A (CERN) ; Carra, F (CERN) ; Lari, L (CERN) ; Rossi, A (CERN) ; Mollicone, P (Malta U.) ; Sammut, N (Malta U.)
The correct functioning of a collimation system is crucial to safely and successfully operate high-energy particle accelerators, such as the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). However, the requirements to handle high-intensity beams can be demanding, and accident scenarios must be well studied in order to assess if the collimator design is robust against possible error scenarios. Detecting Impacts of Proton Beams on the LHC Collimators With Vibration and Sound Measurements / Redaelli, Stefano ; Aberle, Oliver ; Assmann, R W ; Masi, Alessandro ; Spiezia, Giovanni
The 360 MJ stored energy of the 7 TeV LHC beams can seriously damage the beam line elements in case of accidental beam losses. Notably, the collimators will sit at 6 to 7 sigmas from the beam centre (1.2 to 1.4 mm) and will be hit and possibly damaged in case of failures, with a consequent degradation of the cleaning performance of the overall collimation system.
