James (Jay) Johnston is the Evaluation Lead for Provincial TB Services at the BCCDC. He is also a Clinical Professor in the UBC Department of Medicine and an Associate Member of the UBC School of Population & Public Health.
Dr. Johnston’s research interests include tuberculosis (TB) epidemiology, treatment outcomes, drug resistance and genomics. He leads a multidisciplinary team that uses health administrative data to understand TB risk in people migrating to British Columbia. He is an active investigator in several publicly funded multinational randomized control trials examining questions in TB screening, prevention, and treatment. His team is also interested in understanding and improving the long-term health outcomes of people affected by TB.
Dr. Johnston is a Health Research BC Health Professional Investigator. He has a Master of Public Health (MPH) from the Harvard School of Public Health and Grzybowski Fellowship in TB research. He is the incoming President of the North American region of the International Union against TB and Lung Diseases (The Union).
