VIII. Write the correct word into the blanks.

IX. Read the text and answer the questions.

The hardest language
People often ask which is the most difficult language to learn, and it is not easy to answer
because there are many factors to take into consideration. Firstly, in a first language the differences
are unimportant as people learn their mother tongue naturally, so the question of how hard a
language is to learn is only relevant when learning a second language.
A native speaker of Spanish, for example, will find Portuguese much easier to learn than a
native speaker of Chinese, for example, because Portuguese is very similar to Spanish, while
Chinese is very different, so first language can affect learning a second language. The greater the
differences between the second language and our first, the harder it will be for most people to learn.
Many people answer that Chinese is the hardest language to learn, possibly influenced by the
thought of learning the Chinese writing system, and the pronunciation of Chinese does appear to be
very difficult for many foreign learners. However, for Japanese speakers, who already use Chinese
characters in their own language, learning writing will be less difficult than for speakers of
languages using the Roman alphabet.
Some people seem to learn languages readily, while others find it very difficult. Teachers
and the circumstances in which the language is learned also play an important role, as well as each
learner's motivation for learning. If people learn a language because they need to use it
professionally, they often learn it faster than people studying a language that has no direct use in
their day to day life.
Apparently, British diplomats and other embassy staff have found that the second hardest
language is Japanese, which will probably come as no surprise to many, but the language that they
have found to be the most problematic is Hungarian, which has 35 cases (forms of a nouns
according to whether it is subject, object, genitive, etc). This does not mean that Hungarian is the
5
hardest language to learn for everyone, but it causes British diplomatic personnel, who are generally
used to learning languages, the most difficulty. However, Tabassaran, a Caucasian language has 48
cases, so it might cause more difficulty if British diplomats had to learn it.
Different cultures and individuals from those cultures will find different languages more
difficult. In the case of Hungarian for British learners, it is not a question of the writing system,
which uses a similar alphabet, but the grammatical complexity, though native speakers of related
languages may find it easier, while struggling with languages that the British find relatively easy.
No language is easy to learn well, though languages which are related to our first language
are easier. Learning a completely different writing system is a huge challenge, but that does not
necessarily make a language more difficult than another. In the end, it is impossible to say that there
is one language that is the most difficult language in the world.

The Right Job for Your Personality

Choosing a career is an important life decision, yet many people settle on one based on the opinions
of friends and family. It’s very difficult to find something you really enjoy doing, but scientists have
devised tests to help people come closer to finding their dream job. One of the most widely-used
tests is the Holland Code. Psychologist John Holland worked for more than 50 years to develop his
theories about personality and career choice. He created a set of six personality types to help people
understand what careers might be best for them. Dr. Holland believed that people work best in
environments that match their personalities, and the key to finding a satisfying career is to match

10
your fundamental interests with an occupation. Take a look at the six personality types below and
see which jobs might be right for you. Most people are a combination of two or three types.
Realistic: Realistic people like to work with things they can see or touch. They are inclined to solve
problems by doing them, rather than thinking or talking about them. They generally like to work
outside and are good with tools, machines, plants, and animals. Job matches: carpenter, chef, nurse,
pilot.
Investigative: People of this personality type value ideas and are strong at tasks that allow them to
investigate facts and figure out complex problems. They are better at individual work like research
and study, rather than leading groups of people or working in teams. Job matches: computer
programmer, historian, psychologist, surgeon.
Artistic: Artists are creative people. They don’t work well with structure and rules, and thrive
instead in environments that allow communication and a free flow of ideas. They enjoy tasks that
allow them to express themselves and mix with people. Job matches: actor, art therapist, graphic
designer, writer.
Social: Social personalities love to work with people. They get the most satisfaction out of teaching
and helping others, and are driven to serve the community as opposed to making money. Job
matches: coach, counselor, social worker, teacher.
Enterprising: Many great leaders and business people have enterprising personalities. These are
persuasive people who are good at making decisions and leading teams. They tend to value money,
power, and status, and will work toward achieving them. Job matches: business owner, event
manager, lawyer, salesperson
Conventional: Conventional people appreciate rules and regulations, and like having structure to
their lives. They are logical thinkers and have a lot of self-control, making them the perfect people
to work with data and details. Job matches: accountant, analyst, editor, librarian Nowadays, anyone
can take a Holland Code personality test online to find what jobs might be right for them. Why not
try it today?

VI. Read the text and answer the questions.

What are friends for?

Recent research has shown that at any one time in our lives we have around 30 friends, six of whom
we think of as close. Over a lifetime we will make almost 400 friends, but we will keep in touch
with fewer than 10% of them. Almost 60% of us claim that our friendships are more important to us
than career, money or family. Other studies show that men have, on average,
fewer close friends than women do, and that both men and women find their friendships with
women more emotionally satisfying than those with men. We interviewed some people to find out
more.
Jamie, a TV producer in his 30s
For me, anyone who I like, trust, and find interesting, male or female, is a potential friend. Really
close friends I could probably count on one hand. Those are the people who stand
by me even when things go pear-shaped or I behave badly, which does obviously happen from time
to time!
Susannah, a jewellery-maker in her 30s
I make new friends easily. I love getting to know people but I must also admit that I tend to drop
friends quite easily. For me, it’s very important to have balance in a friendship. I don’t like it when
friends expect too much from me. That’s when I think enough is enough – time to move on.
Ewan, an accountant in his 40s
My friends are the people who know the real me, they know what makes me tick, and what makes
me laugh. I think it’s also got a lot to do with shared history. You feel a special bond with people
who have watched you go through important life changes – relationships, jobs, children. I also think
shared tastes play a vital role. I don’t think it’s terribly easy to hit it off with someone who can’t
stand your taste in music, books, films, and vice versa.
Helena, an English teacher in her 30s
My friends make my life possible. We care for one another’s children, look after pets, do one
another’s shopping, counsel each other on our marriages. From all the mothers at the school
gate, you pick the ones you really like, and then they become your support network.
A. Are these statements true (T) or false (F)?

1 we lose touch with the vast majority of our friends. ____

Boy aged 9 to study maths at university

A nine-year-old maths genius from Hong Kong has been accepted to study mathematics at a
local university. Child prodigy March Boedihardjo will attend the Hong Kong Baptist University
(HKBU) and become the youngest college student in the city. The university will create a specially
designed five-year course which will see him gain a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree. Authorities
thought long and hard about whether or not to admit March. HKBU president Professor Franklin
Luk announced at a press conference: "The decision was made after a two-month discussion among
various departments of the university and March's parents." March also met the press and raised a
victory sign when he entered the media room. He seemed very confident amid the non-stop flash
light from photographers.
There has been concern from educationalists that March will miss out on social skills by
attending university so young. His new classmates will all be ten or more years older than he is.
March said this would not be a problem as he already has experience of studying with older
students. He has already spent two years in England, where he sat and passed advanced maths
exams with A grades. "When I was in Oxford, all my schoolmates were over 18 and we often

23
discussed mathematics problems. I think I won't have problems in communicating with people older
than me," said the nine-year-old. Professor Luk is confident March can cope: "With a view to
developing his…personal growth…we will tailor a learning roadmap that best benefits March…
and also give his parents peace of mind," he said.

VII. Read the text and answer the questions.

Everyone has a different personality. It is what makes people individuals and unique. However,
there are some shared personality qualities which let us talk about personality types
One of the most basic personality differences is between extroverts and introverts. These terms are
used in many theories of personality types. They were made popular by the important Swiss
psychiatrist Carl Jung (1875-1961) although he did not invent them. Extroversion and introversion
are ways of describing a person’s attitude to the world: do they move towards it or away from it?
Extroverts are people who look outwards. They are friendly, sociable, talkative, enthusiastic and
self-confident. They are interested in a range of experiences and enjoy spending time with other
people. They tend to act first, then think later. When extroverts feel bad, unmotivated or without
energy, they look outside themselves. This means they might go shopping, call friends or have a
party. Typical extrovert jobs are in politics, sales, teaching and management.
Introverts, on the other hand, look inwards. They feel more comfortable alone and enjoy ideas and
thinking. They are reserved, quiet, thoughtful and may be shy. They like to think and consider
before taking action, and will often analyse before speaking. In contrast to extroverts they value
fewer, but deeper experiences. When feeling bad or stressed, introverts look inside themselves for
energy and motivation. Introverts often work as artists, writers, engineers and inventors.
Although the types are different, most people have both extrovert and introvert characteristics in
their personality, but often they are more one type than the other. There has been some interesting
research into why people are basically extroverts or introverts. Some people say that extroverts and
introverts are born not made. Others believe that environment is more important in shaping
someone s personality.

26
Attitudes towards introverts and extroverts vary in different cultures. For example, Americans value
extrovert qualities. However, cultures such as those in central Europe and south east Asia regard
introvert characteristics more highly. Interestingly, research shows that people who live on islands
tend to be more introverted. Studies have also found that extroverts have higher happiness levels
than introverts.

Ian Kiernan was born in Sydney, Australia, and grew up near the sea. As a child, he loved
swimming, fishing, and sailing in Sydney Harbour, After finishing school, he started a construction
company, which specialized in restoring historic buildings. But his main love was the sea and
sailing. For more than 40 years, he represented Australia in international sailing competitions.
In 1987, Kiernan was competing in an around-the-world sailing race when he began to
notice the enormous amount of garbage in the world’s oceans. When he returned to Australia, he
decided to do something 10 about it.
He started close to home by organizing a community event called “Clean Up Sydney
Harbour,” On Sunday, January 8, 1989, more than 40,000 volunteers came out to clear away
garbage. The next year, Kiernan decided to make the clean-up a national event. It was a huge
success. Across Australia, an estimated 300,000 people spent the day working to improve their local
environment.
Clean Up Australia Day has been held annually since then, growing bigger every year. In
2005, for example, 670,000 people removed more than 8,450 tons of garbage from beaches, parks,
streets, and waterways. They picked up empty glass and plastic bottles, plastic bags, and thousands
of snack food wrappers. There were also some more unusual items, including an electric guitar, a
plastic monkey, and a full bottle of whiskey. Kiernan is delighted with the success of his project.
“Just the spirit of Clean Up is great. People out there are really, really into it,” he said, after last
year’s Clean Up Australia Day. “We saw 1,500 roadsides cleared, 700 parks, 1,300 waterways, and
coastal areas. The only thing is—of ail of the plastic that we find out there, only 20 per cent of

32
plastic packaging is actually recycled. When you look at paper recycling, we have got 80 per cent
recovery. There is a lot that needs to be done there.”
In 1993, Kiernan started an even more ambitious program. With the help of the United
Nations Environment Program, he launched Clean Up the World, an international program that
supports communities around the world in cleaning up and conserving the environment. Every year,
the third weekend in September is Clean Up the World weekend. In its first year, more than 30
million people in 80 countries participated. Since then. Clean Up the World has grown larger and
more popular every year. Ian Kiernan’s unique idea has spread from one city to the whole world.

SURVIVAL IN THE WILD
Plants and animals have the hard job of surviving in a very wild world. How do they do it?
There are many ways plants and animals have adapted in order to survive.
Camouflage is one way animals adapt to survive. For some animals, this means that their fur, scales,
or skin are a similar color to the land around them. Deer, for example, have brown fur that blends in
36
with the trees, so it’s harder for predators to see them. This saves them from becoming prey to a
larger animal.
Some animals can actually change colors to match their environment. Many people think of
chameleons when they think of this type of camouflage, but rabbits are a great example as well.
Some rabbits’ fur will change colors depending on the season. Their fur might be brown in the
spring, summer, and fall to match the trees, but the brown fur will fall out and white fur will grow
in the winter to blend in with the snow. This way the rabbit is safer from predators year-round.
Some insects, instead of blending in with their environment, look like something else that
will deter animals from eating them. A walking stick looks just like a stick so that predators will
pass it by without noticing it. Katydids mimic leaves. Some moths and butterflies have designs on
their wings that make them look like snakes or owls, to scare away their predators.
For some plants, however, they don’t want to blend in; they want to stand out to survive!
Many plants grow flowers with colorful petals to attract bees. The bees help pollinate the flowers so
that they can produce new flowers.
Instead of hiding, some plants and animals develop structures that aim to hurt anything that
tries to hurt them. Some plants develop thorns so that animals will not eat them. Some animals have
extremely sharp teeth and claws so they can fight off other animals. Porcupines and hedgehogs even
have spikes, called quills or spines, covering their backs so animals won’t want to eat them!

CULTURE SHOCK
Culture shock describes the range of feelings and symptoms that can occur as a result of
moving from a familiar to an unfamiliar culture. It includes the shock of a new environment,
meeting lots of new people, and learning the ways of a different country. It also includes the shock
of being separated from the important people in your life, maybe family, friends, colleagues,
teachers; people you would normally talk to during times of uncertainty, people who give you
support and advice.
Despite its name, culture shock is not quite as sudden as most people expect. The first few
days in a new country can be a time of great excitement, when everything is new and intriguing.
However, this period of excitement can fade as differences create an impact and you may start to
feel confused, isolated, and inadequate as cultural differences intrude and familiar supports (e.g.
family and friends) are not immediately available. Symptoms you may experience include physical
complaints and a loss of appetite, sleep disturbances, lack of concentration, and fatigue. This is
45
probably the most difficult phase for any new student and it is important to remember that what you
are feeling is a normal reaction for someone who has moved to new surroundings.
Next you may become very hostile to the new culture, and very conscious of all that you
dislike about it. Despite what you may think, this is actually quite a healthy reaction as you are
reconnecting with what you value about yourself and your own culture. You will hopefully
progress from here to being able to accept the differences and similarities between the two cultures.
This should lead to feelings of increased confidence, as you gain experience and are better able to
cope with new situations.
Finally, most students come to value the differences and similarities between the two
cultures, to the point where most situations are enjoyable and you are able to make choices
according to your preferences and values.
A. Read the text. Are the statements true (T) or false (F)?
1 Talking to people you haven’t met before can be a cause of culture shock. ……..
2 You may miss the people you used to work with. ……..
3 Culture shock usually hits you as soon as you arrive in the foreign country. ……..
4 You may enjoy being in the new country at first. ……..
5 Because of culture shock, you might not feel hungry. ……..
6 The worst time is when you start to hate things about the new culture. ……..
7 You must avoid having negative feelings about the new culture. ……..
8 To be happy, you need to find out what is the same in both cultures. ……..
9 You will feel sure of yourself when you learn how to avoid unfamiliar situations. ……..

it was. Our rooms were clean, but the bed cover was stained.  The furniture was really outdated,
especially the bathroom, which had an old pink suite and linoleum on the floor. The ‘shower’ was a
hose that you fit onto the taps.  The sink was in the bedroom, right next to the television sockets
which seems pretty unsafe to me. We had dinner there, and it was well-cooked, but we were still
hungry afterwards because the servings were so tiny. The drinks prices were extortionate - £5 for a
small glass of wine. My friend ordered a brandy and coke, but the waitress brought him whisky and
coke. When we complained, she just walked off!  Not impressed. I would like to say it was cheap
and cheerful but at £120 a night, it was neither - overpriced and depressing more like.
MellowBunny writes:
Just returned from a 3 day break here, and thought that the Coach Hotel was very good value for
money. I had requested a quiet room and this was noted at reception. I got a great room - large,
comfortable and clean, with a seating area overlooking the racecourse. The only disappointing thing
was that there were no tea/coffee facilities in the room - not even a kettle. The furniture and decor
was not particularly up-to-date, but that’s what you would expect from an old hotel. There was a
wide selection of well-cooked food on offer. At breakfast I had poached eggs, and they were done
to perfection. In the evening, I had a delicious three-course meal, and I wasn’t kept waiting for ages
between courses, which is definitely a plus when you’re dining alone. I found the staff friendly and
always willing to help.
TomWheeler  writes:
The hotel’s is just 200 metres walk away from the racecourse, so it’s really convenient. There’s
plenty of space to park. The bed was comfortable with clean cotton sheets. Good power shower. I
would agree with some of the less favourable reviews on the site too, though. The room definitely
needed some attention – it smelt musty and the furniture was old, cheap and battered.  The bin
hadn't been emptied from previous guests, and there was other rubbish on the floor. The fan in the
bathroom was very loud, and the plumbing made strange noises in the night. The walls were thin
too. Breakfast was okay, but there wasn’t much of it.
JadeUnicorn writes:
Don’t be fooled by the pictures online. What you see is definitely NOT what you get!  First, it’s not
close to the city centre – it’s at least a 35 minute walk. Furniture was old and dated, although the
bed was comfortable. Tiny bathroom, with an absurdly loud extractor fan. No lock on the bathroom
door and no toiletries, not even soap. There were cobwebs all over the hotel. The dining room is
dark and uninviting, with no windows except one tiny one. The food simply was the type that gives
Britain a bad name. Instant coffee and cheap sausages. Service was poor, with staff clearing the
table while we were still eating.

A. Who says these about the hotel?

The digital landscape has put increased pressure on teenagers today, and we feel it. There are so
many social media channels: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, Tumblr, you name it. I made
a conscious decision to avoid Snapchat and Instagram because of the social pressure I saw them
putting on my 14-year-old little sister. If my mum turned off the WiFi at 11pm, my sister would beg
me to turn my phone into a hotspot. She always needed to load her Snapchat stories one more time,
or to reply to a message that had come in two minutes ago because she didn’t want her friend to
feel ignored. If I refused, saying she could respond in the morning, I’d get the “You’re ruining my
social life” speech. Even as a teenager as well, I sometimes find this craze a little baffling.
A new study has found that teenagers who engage with social media during the night could be
damaging their sleep and increasing their risk of anxiety and depression. Teenagers spoke about the
pressure they felt to make themselves available 24/7 and the resulting anxiety if they did not
respond immediately to texts or posts. Teens are so emotionally invested in social media that a fifth
of secondary school pupils will wake up at night and log on just to make sure they don’t miss out.
Perhaps the worst thing about this is that teenagers need more sleep than adults do, so night-time
social media use could be detrimental to their health. A lack of sleep can make teenagers tired,
irritable, and depressed.
During the summer holidays, I lost my phone. And for the week that I was phoneless, it felt like a
disaster. I love my phone. It gives me quick access to information and allows me to be constantly
looped in with my friends, to know exactly what is going on in their lives. So when I didn’t have
my phone for a week, I felt a slight sense of FOMO, or if you’re not up to speed with the lingo, fear
of missing out. By the end of the week, I’d got used to not having a phone and I’d quite enjoyed the
break from social media. But there was still a lingering sense of sadness at the back of my mind that
there would be conversations I had missed, messages that had been sent, funny videos shared and
night-time chats that I would probably never get to see.

At the age of 54 Heidemarie gave up her job as a psychotherapist, gave away all her money
and her flat and threw away her credit cards. Today, apart from a few clothes (three sweaters, two
skirts, two pairs of shoes, and a coat) and a few personal belongings, she doesn’t own anything.

74
It began as a one-year experiment. In her home city of Dortmund she set up a ‘swapping circle’
where people swap services without using money, for example, a haircut for a mathematics class.
To prove that this could work she decided to give up using money for a year. But when the year
ended she continued and has not used money since then.
At first she house-sat for friends who were on holiday. She stayed in their house in return for
watering the plants and looking after their animals. At the moment she is staying in a student
residence where she can sleep, have a shower, or use a computer in return for cooking for the young
people who live there. She also ‘works’ as a psychotherapist. ‘Before I treated very wealthy people
but now I help anyone who turns up. Sometimes they give me something in return, but not
always.’
Heidemarie says, ‘I can live thanks to my contacts. A lot of people who know me
understand what I’m doing and want to help me. When I need a bus ticket, for example, or a new
tube of toothpaste I think, “Who can I ask? What can I give them in return?” If I want to go to the
cinema I might offer to look after somebody’s children for the afternoon.
‘It is one of the mistakes of our society that most people do something they don’t like just to
earn money and spend it on things they don’t need. Many people judge you according to how much
you earn. In my opinion, all jobs are equally important. You may not earn a lot of money but you
may be worth a lot as a person. That’s my message’.
So what did she do with all the money she earned from the sales of ‘My life without
money’?
‘I gave it all away…’

VII. Read the text and answer the questions.

Much of the music we listen to today is a mixture of styles from various countries and time
periods. A lot of music has roots in older traditional songs heard in many different countries around
the world. Traditional, or folk, music is collected over decades, if not centuries. Younger
generations learn these songs from their elders through practice and repetition.
Since music can tell us a lot about different cultures through its lyrics, melodies, and the
instruments used, researchers and music fans see it as an essential part of history. They fear that
86
traditional and older types of music are slowly disappearing, partly because they are less likely to be
written down or recorded, or because the format in which they are recorded is no longer in use.
Also, younger generations may not find such music very appealing, so once older generations pass
away, the music may die out with them. Whole genres of music may go extinct.
There is a growing effort to preserve music in its many forms. Some researchers create field
recordings-recordings made outside of a recording studio-to capture live performances. For
example, in the early 1900s, social scientist Frances Densmore made recordings of Native
American songs that had been sung for many generations but were in danger of being forgotten.
Researchers also transcribe old music by listening to old recordings-sometimes the only one of its
kind left. They try to write out the music so that it can be studied and played by modern musicians.
Collecting music is another form of music presentation. Some collectors are extremely
passionate about their music, and will spend a lot of time and money looking for things that have
not been produced or sold for many years. Their efforts help to document music of different
cultures, genres, time periods, and places. For example, some punk rock fans still collect cassette
tapes from the 70s, while many jazz fans prefer to listen to old vinyl records.
There are also associations and societies to preserve and celebrate very specific kinds of
music. For example, the ldelsohn Society helps to preserve old and rare Jewish music, the Suni
Project celebrates the work of Grikor Marzaian Suni, an old and influential Armenian
composer, while the Videogame Music Preservation Foundation lets people listen to old videogame
music in its original form.
Now, modern technology makes it much easier to preserve music. Smart phones can be used
to record music, while the Internet lets us share these recordings and find people with similar
interests. Soon, losing a piece of music may be a thing of the past.

PUT ON YOUR BALLGOWN - WE'RE GOING TO THE CINEMA
What do you wear to the cinema? If you're anything like me, then the answer is a pair of
jeans, and a top or a jumper. But both you and I are behind the times, because there is a new type of
film fan out there: they dress up to look like their favourite stars, they treat going to the cinema like
a party, and respond to the cast of the film as if they had been in a play.
I witnessed this for myself when Sex and the City was released in UK cinemas. I turned up in my
usual top and jeans and found myself surrounded by young women in party dresses and high heels.
They were all paying respect to their favourite characters in the film.
Apparently, some groups of women even took it further by organizing a whole evening of
events - make-up at a beauty salon, cocktails before and after the film, and themed parties related to
the Sex and the City lifestyle.
Later the same year, Mamma Mia! came out and it was the turn of the older film fans to
wear their favourite fashions from the 1970s and sing along to the Abba soundtrack. And it's not

89
just girls who love romantic comedies who get involved; male fans of the Batman series of films
were also seen in full costume for a screening of The Dark Knight.
It seems that the audience reaction during a film isn't the same as it used to be. Until a few of
years ago, all the interacting was done by the actors on the screen. If anyone made a noise when
opening some sweets or having a drink, the people nearby would respond with a loud 'Sshh!'
Nowadays, some people applaud and shout when the film starts, cheer when their favourite
character appears, and even give a standing ovation at the end if they've really loved the movie.
You have to admit that this is a strange thing to do when the actors can't hear you! And of
course, it doesn't happen with all types of audience. A tense thriller or moving account of war is
unlikely to create spontaneous shouts and applause.
But there does seem to be a trend for lighter films to attract an interactive audience. Maybe
film-makers will pick up on this and there will be a dress code for every popular movie that is
released ...

V. Read the text answer the questions.

CAN WE MAKE OUR OWN LUCK?

Some people seem to be born lucky. They meet their perfect partners, achieve their
ambitions, and live happy lives. The British psychologist Dr Richard Wiseman has done a lot of
research to discover why some people are luckier than others. After interviewing hundreds of
people with the questionnaire on p. 101 he has concluded that people who think they are lucky

99
achieve more success and happiness than those who don't. Without realizing it, they are creating
good fortune in their lives. Using Dr Wiseman's techniques you too can understand, control, and
increase your own good fortune.

1. Lucky people make the most of their opportunities- Be open to new experiences and vary your
routine. For example, get off the bus a stop earlier than usual. You may see something interesting or
new, or bump into an old friend.

2. Lucky people trust their instinct- When you are trying to decide what to do, first make an effort
to relax. Then when your mind is clear, listen to what it is telling you and act on it.

3. Lucky people expect to be lucky- Convince yourself that your future will be bright and lucky. Set
realistic but high goals. If you fail, don't give up, and be open to the idea of trying a different way to
achieve your goals.

4. Lucky people use bad luck to their advantage- If something bad happens, imagine how things
could have been worse. You will then realize that things aren't so bad after all. Compare your
situation with other people who are in an even worse situation. Take a long view of things- even if
things seem bad now, expect them to get better in the end. Learn from your past mistakes and think
of new ways of solving your problems.

A. Make a list of your goals. They must be specific, not vague, e.g. 'I want to spend more time with
my partner', not 'I want to be happy'. Now make a second list of all the advantages you would get if
you achieved your goals, and the disadvantages. Compare the advantages with the disadvantages
and you will see which goals are worth trying to achieve.

B. Make a list of six new experiences you'd like to try. These could be simple, like eating at a new
restaurant, or long term, for example learning a new language. Number the experiences 1-6.Then
throw a dice and whatever experience is chosen, go out and do it.

C. When you experience bad luck, first cry or scream for 30 minutes. Then put your bad luck
behind you. Do something to make the situation better, e.g. ask friends for advice and focus on a
solution to the problem.

D. If you are trying to decide between two options, write one of them down in the form of a letter.
For example, if you are unhappy about a relationship, write to your partner explaining that it's all
over. Read the letter. Would you really like to send it, or is something telling you that it doesn't feel
right? If so, don't do it.

A. Read the article and match the exercises A-D with the paragraphs 1-4.

Helping Others

1. Habitat for Humanity International—or Habitat—is a nonprofit organization that helps people in
need build houses. Since 1976, volunteers for Habitat have served more than 600,000 families
worldwide. According to Habitat, however, there are still more than 1.6 billion people in the world
5 without decent housing. In the article below, Mariko Asano talks about her experience as a
Habitat volunteer. She has traveled to the Philippines three times to help build houses for people
who need them.

2. I am 24 years old, and I grew up in Nishinomiya, Japan. Several years ago, I went to Negros
Island in the Philippines as a Habitat volunteer. This was the first of three trips I have taken to the
Philippines as a volunteer. For me, the idea of building somebody’s house abroad was very exciting.
The next year I returned to Negros Island as a Habitat volunteer. This time I went as a student
leader with 28 classmates from Kyoto University of Foreign Studies.
101
3. Both the staff and the families on Negros Island became dear friends of the work team I led.
Meeting these people was wonderful for each of us. Their lifestyle reminded us of the meaning and
value of life. The people also helped us appreciate the more valuable things in life, such as spending
time with your family, friends, and neighbors; developing close relationships; helping each other;
and appreciating what you do have. These things are sometimes forgotten in an affluent country like
Japan.

4. We thought we came to the Philippines to help the Filipino people, but they helped us to see
something valuable. They generously offered their food, space, and hearts in a way we were
unaccustomed to. (Would you 25 give up your bed for a stranger and sleep on the uncomfortable
cement floor at your own house?)
5. When I took my third trip to the Philippines as a Habitat volunteer, I was assigned to a house
with young people from around the world. In my group, there were Filipinos, Americans, Indians,
Koreans, and Japanese. We worked together to complete a house for a family we met on the site.
On the last day, all of us stood inside a room we had built in just a week, feeling a sense of
fulfillment. Even now we keep in touch across the world. Some of us are actively involved in
Habitat in different countries.
A. The reading is about:

Please give me some advice.
