Lesson Objectives
Explain the difference between open and closed
circuits Explain what voltage is Draw simple circuit diagrams using the correct symbols.
Electric circuit
For electricity to
flow, electrons must have a path to follow. The path is called an electric circuit.
simple circuits
Here is a simple electric circuit. It has a cell, a lamp and a switch.
wires
cell
switch
lamp
A switch
A switch is a device that can open and close a circuit.
Circuit Diagram
In circuit diagrams, all
connecting wires are drawn as straight lines. Symbols are used to represent different parts of the circuit. The symbols used in circuit diagrams are recognized all around the world by scientists and electricians
circuit diagrams
In circuit diagrams components are represented by the following symbols;
cell
battery
Open switch
Closed switch
Lamp or globe
ammeter
voltmeter
motor
buzzer
Challenge
Draw a circuit diagram
A closed circuit is complete unbroken circuit Which part of a light globe glows to produce light? The filament From which terminal of a battery are electrons forced out? The negative terminal of the battery forces electrons out What does voltage measure? Voltage measures how much energy the battery gives the electrons to move around the circuit
Thinking Challenge
If three 1.5 volt batteries were used to power a torch
instead of two, what voltage would they provide to the torch? 4.5 V Why is it important to have circuit symbols that are recognized by scientists and electricians around the world? It allows scientists and electricians to communicate each other about electricity without confussion
Thinking Challenge
Why is it important for
the strip connecting the batteries to the globe to be made of metal? Because metals conduct electricity
Homework
A- Draw a simple circuit diagram for buzzer at your
home.
Symbol for AC power supply ( the Power Supply at your Home )
