Detailed Lesson Plan in Science 5

I. Objectives

In this lesson, the students should be able to:

A. Infer the parts of electrical circuit

B. Differentiates open and closed circuit

C. Discuss safety precautions in using electricity

II. Subject Matter

Topic: Open and Closed circuit

References: Science Beyond Borders 5, pg. 140-141

Materials: visual aids, laptop, speaker and pictures

III. Procedure

Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity

A. Preliminary Activities
 Prayer
 Classroom Setting
 Checking of
 Recap/Reviewing the past lesson
B. Motivation
Teacher will allow the students to watch a video
about open and closed circuit.
C. Presentation
Based on the video that you watch what do you Our lesson for today is about open and closed

Very good, let’s discuss about it.

D. Lesson Proper

Please take a look at this picture.

It is open circuit.
is it open or closed circuit?
Because there is an opening to the

connection.
Very good, it is indeed open circuit since electricity
does not flow in this kind of circuit because there is
a gap or no complete path from one end of the
circuit of the other end.

So what do you think make circuit open? Through the use of switch

Correct, by pushing the switch off the light will turn

off, and by pushing the switch on the light will be
turn on.

I think this circuit is closed.

Next, how about this image?
Since the flow of electricity is continues and
Why?
there is no opening seen at this image.
Thank you for your answer, very good. It is correct,
this is closed circuit. As you can see a wire is
attached to the negative end of the battery, while
the other wire is attached to the positive end, both
wires are attached to the bulb.

A circuit has four parts, these are source, light bulb,

wires and switch.
Source provides the voltage (the force that

pushes electrons through a conductor —
measured in volts) and current (the rate of
flow of electrons — measured in amperes) to
energize a device attached to the circuit.
Thank you, in short source is the storage of
electricity.

of electricity to it.
Light bulb is the receiver of the electricity.
Wire is the medium where in electrical

energy flows from its source to its load.

load .

Last is switch which provides the control that closes

(continues) or opens (breaks) the electrical energy
flow on the circuit.

Now that we all have already knowledge about open

and closed circuit, do you think safety precautions Yes
are very important?
Why? Because it will save our life and avoid
accident.
Very good, although electricity is very useful it is
also very dangerous. That is why safety precautions
are very important.

Here are some electrical safety precautions:

 Unplug appliances: Unplug appliances when
not in use.
 Avoid overloading outlets: Don't overload
electrical outlets, and use a power strip with
surge protection.
 Keep electrical equipment dry: Keep
electrical equipment away from water and
keep your hands dry when working with
electrical appliances.
 Unplug equipment properly: Unplug
equipment by the head, not by the cord.
 Childproof electrical outlets: Childproof
electrical outlets to prevent children
from sticking objects into them.
 Use insulated tools: Use insulated tools
when working with electricity.
 Don't run cords under carpeting: Don't
run cords under carpeting, as the
carpeting can cause the cords to
overheat and catch fire.
 Stay away from power lines: Stay away
from substations, power lines, and
broken or fallen power lines.
 Obey warning signs: Don't touch big,
metal transformer boxes with warning
signs.
 Store electrical devices out of reach:
Store electrical devices like toasters and
hair dryers out of reach of children.
 Use hide-a-cord devices: Use hide-a-cord
devices or hide extension cords behind
furniture.
 Put electrical tape over unused plug
holes: Put electrical tape over unused
plug holes on cords.

E. Generalization
Remember:
 In Open circuit electricity does not flow
because there is a gap or no complete path
from one end of the circuit of the other end.
 In closed circuit wire is attached to the
negative end of the battery, while the other
wire is attached to the positive end, both
wires are attached to the bulb.
 There are four basic parts that a circuit
have, these are source, light bulb, wire and
switch.
 Safety precautions are very important
because it will save our life.
F. Application
Teacher will divide the class into five groups. Each
group must have one representative and he/she is
the one who will write the answer on the board.
Teacher will read the description.
1. circuit where electricity cannot flow
2. a complete path of electricity
3. a source of energy
4. circuit where electricity flows freely
5. connect the light bulb and the battery

IV. Evaluation

In a short bond paper draw an image showing the safety precautions in using electricity.
