Performance of COTS I/O Modules in an Accelerator Control System / Hartman, Steven M
We analyze some recent experiences with commercial off the shelf (COTS) I/O hardware modules, comparing manufacturer specifications with our in-house measurements. Discrepancies between quoted specifications and measured performance under accelerator laboratory conditions have been observed. [...]

On-Line Radiation Test Facility for Industrial Equipment needed for the Large Hadron Collider at CERN / Rausch, R ; Tavlet, Marc (CERN)
The future Large Hadron Collider to be built at CERN will use superconducting magnets cooled down to 1.2 K. To preserve the superconductivity, the energy deposition dose levels in equipment located outside the cryostat, in the LHC tunnel, are calculated to be of the order of 1 to 10 Gy per year. [...]

The new control system of the SPS injection kicker / Antoine, A ; Carlier, E ; Marchand, A ; Verhagen, H
The SPS accelerator will be used as injector for the LHC and has to be adapted to the LHC requirements. The tight specification on beam blow-up and bunch spacing in the SPS has required an upgrade program of the SPS injection kicker in order to obtain a reduction of the magnetic field ripple to less than ± 0.5% and of the magnet current rise time to less than 145 ns. [...]

Radiation test of commercial of the shelf (COTS) optical transceivers in the frame of the beam position monitor (BPM) consolidation project for the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) / Marin, M Barros (CERN) ; Boccardi, A (CERN) ; Ozdogan, S Can (CERN) ; Danzeca, S (CERN) ; Ferraro, R (CERN) ; Scialdone, A (CERN)
The consolidation of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) beam position monitor (BPM) requires the deployment of about 5000 single-mode radiation-tolerant optical transmitters, working at 10 Gbps during 20 years of operation. While the use of the custom devices being designed at CERN remains the baseline for the project, 8 commercial of the shelf (COTS) optical transceivers have been evaluated as an alternative. [...]

Radiation Hardening of LED Luminaires for Accelerator Tunnels / Devine, James D. (CERN) ; Floriduz, Alessandro (CERN)
This paper summarises progress made towards the radiation hardening of LED emergency luminaires for evacuation and emergency response within the underground areas of the CERN accelerator complex. The objective has been to radiation harden existing Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) emergency luminaires to maximise lighting performance, without compromising IEC 60598-2-22 compliance. [...]

A high precision radiation-tolerant LVDT conditioning module / Masi, A (CERN) ; Danzeca, S (CERN ; IUT, Montpellier) ; Losito, R (CERN) ; Peronnard, P (CERN) ; Secondo, R (CERN) ; Spiezia, G (CERN)
Linear variable differential transformer (LVDT) position sensors are widely used in particle accelerators and nuclear plants, thanks to their properties of contact-less sensing, radiation tolerance, infinite resolution, good linearity and cost efficiency. Many applications require high reading accuracy, even in environments with high radiation levels, where the conditioning electronics must be located several hundred meters away from the sensor. [...]
