In September it emerged that officers had sent prosecutors details of what they had uncovered in an "advice and guidance report" and were seeking formal advice on what they should do next.

While much of that is devoted to nutrition and exercise guidance, a significant chunk of it is building clients' confidence and helping them with their mindset.

The guidance was issued by The Dogs Trust, which advises against using dogs in schools but said it "is a trend we have seen grow in popularity in the UK".

“There is no real set of rules or guidance that can ever prepare you for what it means to commit to another person and choose to be family,” she said.
