REVIEW

What was our

previous lesson
all about?
Identify each statement below as to types of natural
food in the pond. (Lumot, lablab, plankton)

_____1. This type of natural food in the pond comprises several

species of blue-green algae, green algae, diatoms, rotifers,
crustaceans, larvae, insects, roundworms, and detritus.
_____2. This natural food is basically frown for milkfish.
_____3. This is the collective term used for microscopic organisms
suspended in water.
_____4. This plant grows well during the dry months in ponds with
hard bottoms and salinity of 25–32 ppt.
_____5. This filamentous or grass green algae will grow best in
areas where lab-lab grows poorly.
Questions:

1. What can you say about the

pictures?
2. What are these facilities?
3. How are these facilities
installed?

FISH PEN AND FISH CAGE
Fish Pen- A fish enclosure made of closely-woven bamboo screens,
nylon screens or nets or other materials attached to poles staked at
the bottom up to the surface of the lake, river or other shallow bodies
of water for the purpose of growing and/or culturing of fish to various
sizes in fresh, brackish and marine waters.

Fish cage- Fish cage refers to a stationary or floating fish enclosure

made of synthetic net wire/bamboo screen or other materials set in
the form of inverted mosquito net (hapa type) with or without cover
with all sides either tied to poles staked to the bottom of the water or
with anchored floats for aquaculture purposes.
Difference between cage and pen:

cage is totally enclosed on all, or all

but the top, sides by mesh or
netting, whereas in pen culture the
bottom of the enclosure is formed
by the lake or sea bottom
Requirements for installation of nets
and pens
Location where there is a good flow of water in and
out
2. Depth of nets depends on the dpeth of water
3. Sturdiness depends on location
4. Stocking density depends on natural productivity
of water
5. Local regulations
6. denr regulations as to location: pen or belt areas
Materials for pens Materials for cages

PENS CAGES
Bamboo Bamboo
Net Cocolumber
Rope Nylon
Labor Drum
epoxy
Net
Labor
Steps in Installing Fish Cages
1. Dig holes in the drums
2. Attach to 2x3 coco lumber using nylon in both sides of the
drum
3. Attach a pair of bamboos on the cocolumber
4. Form a square or rectangle according to desired size and
attached the nets according to deaired size
5. Attach sinker (bato) Maintenance: check and repair on
holes regularly

Advantage: Cage is flexible when flooding because it only

floats compared to pen which is installed
Steps in Installing Fish Cage
1.Pole vertical structure should be started with the 4corners
then at the center.
2. Next is to attach the horizontal ones
3. Followed by the stiffeners
4. After the housing is done, prepare the remaining bamboos
and nets
5. Measure the depth of the water before installing the nets
and add additional 1 meter to the depth of the net for
clearance

Advantage: Easy harvest compared to harvesting in pond

APPLYING KNOWLEDGE ACROSS
CURRICULUM

PRACTICAL RESEARCH
WHAT ARE THE
MATERIALS AND
METHOD SECTION?
The materials are simply the raw materials, tools,
subject and/or important chemicals used in your
experiments. Basically, it is the important details of
WHAT you use in your research.

The methods section is HOW you conduct the research.

Here, you describe all the steps or procedures you've
done in order to achieve the research objectives,
including the experimental design and data analysis
WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF
MATERIALS AND
METHODS?
To provide a precise description of
(1) WHAT are used in the experiments, and
(2) WHAT experiments are used and HOW the
experiments are conducted to ensure you meet
the research objectives.
WHY IS THE MATERIAL AND
METHOD SECTION
IMPORTANT?
To ensure the credibility of your research. In
other words, whatever materials/chemicals and
procedures that you choose should be suitable
and valid to answer your research questions. To
ensure the reproducibility of your methods so
that other research may repeat your research.
To guide your readers on how the research is
conducted and organized to tell a compelling
story of your research.
ABSTRACTION

1.What is fish pen and fish cage?

2.How do they differ in terms of
structure?
3.How are fish cage installed?
4.How are fish pen installed?
VALUING:

As practitioner of fish culture, what

is the importance of having the
knowledge in installation/setting-
up fish cage and fish pen in
consideration to the location
(Topography), water quality, and
depth?
APPLICATION: ACTIVITY 2 (GROUP
WORK)
DIRECTION:
Recall the steps in setting-up/installation of
fishpen and fish cage. Since it is impossible
for us to install cages and pen in the field,
with the same grouping, set-up or construct
miniature pen and cages. Task will be drawn
by lot. Afterwards, Each group shall explain
in class on how they constructed their
assigned task
