A. Mindoro – people are called Mangyans
- Southern part of Mindoro (HanunuoMangyans)
- Occidental Mindoro (Iraya Mangyans)
1. Ambahan – literary form is a rhythmic expression of the mangyans with a meter of 7
syllables
and is written on bamboo tubes or slats.
2. Basket of the Iraya Mangyans – made of dried nito grass and forest vines with designs of
humans, animals, trees and other objects.
B. Marindoque – Lantern Festival where participants wear masks and costumes that depict
Roman soldiers (Moriones)
1. Morion – is the masks that are made of wood a paper-mache adorned with colorful shells,
animal hairs, tassels and crepe papers.
2. Buri and Raffia weaving

C. Romblon – 1. Known for its fine marble products


2. Known also for their beautifully woven mats and bags

D. Palawan – countries last frontier because it is rich in culture and cultural diversity.
- Tagbanuas, first inhabitants of Palawan
- Tagbanua men – skillful wood carvers
- Children & women – proficient weavers
1. Tingkop – cone-shaped colander harvest basket made of blackened and natural bamboo
2. Tagbanua carvings – blackened with soot and then etched with simple patterns exposing
the
original white grain of the wood.
3. Manunggul Jar – 8th century BC jar is considered as one of the most important artifacts in
the Philippines; found in the cave of Palawan and serve as a vessel of the
secondary burial of the deceased.

Panay Island Arts and Crafts
1. Hablon – weaved from jusi and piña textiles
2. Patadyong – worn by women as a skirt paired with a kimono
- Can also be used as shade from the sun and rain
- Characterized by its linear and geometric designs of different colors
- Traditional materials used for patadyong weaving are cotton and abaca.
3. Piña Weaving- Requires long hours of laborious. Extraction of Fibers from Pineapple
leaves
using different methods and techniques before setting the fine fiber to be
woven.
4. Aklan Wearing – (buckets, trays and mats)
- pandan and bariw plants are the materials
- form of social interaction in the community
5. Capiz Shell – important materials in the craft of Panay Island particularly in Aklan & Ilo-
ilo
-capiz shells are bleached and dried before they are pressed
- found into various craft products like plates, utility box, chandelier,
Window etc.
Festival in Visayas
1. Ati-atihan – regarded as one of the most colorful festival
- held in Kalibo Aklan
- Ati-atihan means “Make Believe Ati” the indigenous native of the island
- participants paint their faces in different ways and dress in the impressive
costumes.
2. Masskara Festival in Bacolod – considered as the most spectacular display of colors,
beauty and culture of the Negrenses.
- masskara comes from two words “mass” meaning crowd and “cara” which means
face.
-smiling mask have become the city’s symbol, which earned them the moniker, “City
of Smiles”
3. Kasadyaan Festival in Tacloban City- cultural-religious celebration to honor the feast day
of Santo Niño.
- the highlight of the event is the Pintado dance presentation.

Architecture
1. Molo Church - in Ilo-ilo depicts the fusion of Gothic and Renaissance styles.
- Spires of the two towers and the interior elements such as the altar and the
pulpits (show Gothic characteristics)
- Regarded as the “Womens Church” because of the 16 women saints inside
and its patron saint, St. Anne.
- constructed with white coral rocks.
2. Miag-ao Church - an example or Baroque-Romanesque Architecture that shows through its
massive quality (thick walls, round arches, sturdy piers, groin vaults, large
towers and decorative arcades)
-Acclaimed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

3. The Ruins- found in Talisay Negros Occidental is an example of neoclassical architecture


- built by a wealthy haciendero for his Portuguese wife in the early 1900’s
-destroyed by fire during the World War II
- the colors of the ruins change from white to gray and orange to red as the sunset
touches the structure
