MODULE 1: FOLK ARTS AND DESIGN FROM LUZON

Lesson 1-3 Summary of the Topic


1.pay-yo or bay-yo- rice terraces in Banawe ,Battad, Hungduan and other places.
2. abel- hand woven cotton textile of the Ilocos Region.

11. Panagabel- the oldest Ilocano weaving tradition that they have inherited from their ancestors.
12. Pangasinan-known as the salt capital of the region during the pre-hispanic times.

14. ikat- loincloth of the Ifugao
15. Body tattoo- form of body art of the cultural communities and considered as part of their clothing and decoration.
16. siniwsiwan- fabric used for blankets and clothing in Mountain Province.
17. suklang-is an everyday hat used by men with their matches, tobacco and beetle nut for chewing.
18. Cagayan Valley- wide valley in North-eastern part of Luzon. Composed of the provinces of Batanes, Cagayan, Isabela, Nueva
Vizcaya and Quirino.
19. Cagayan River- longest river in the country.
20. vuyavuy palm- a plant similar to coconut found in Batanes.
21. bukyat- a belt used by mothers after giving birth in Nueva Vizcaya.
22. singkaban- is the local term for bamboo arches elaborately designed with kayas in Bulacan.
23.puni or poni- decoration during fiestas and special occasions made from young coconut leaves in Bulacan.(Bulacan is also known
for its fire cracker industry)
24. Pampangos or kapampangan incorporate the arts in their food such as weaving the coconut leaves wrapping for their delicacy
called patupat.They are also known for their giant lanterns and preparation of delicious foods.
25. Nueva Ecija known for its rice production.
26. Tanduyong Festival- thanksgiving for bountiful harvest of the Nueva Ecijanos.
27.Tinis- narrates the story how Joseph and Mary found a place to give birth to JESUS in Kawit, Cavite..
28. sapin-sapin- a type of delicacy made from grounded glutinous rice.
29. balisong- a type of knife that can be folded like a fan which comes in different sizes it is also known as the butterfly knife.
30. Bicol Region-known for its baskets, bags, slippers, coin purses and other crafts that are made from abaca and raffia fibers.
31. Romblon is known for its fine marble products and for their beautiful woven mats and bags made out of romblon plant.
32. Palawan known as the countrys last frontier and for its rich cultural and natural diversity.

Known for its largest marine habitat the Tubbataha Reef.

33. Underground River in Palawan- one the recent recognized Seven Wonders of Nature last January 28, 2012.
34. Manunggul Jar- considered as one of the precious artefact in the Philippines.

The jar serves as container for secondary burial of the deceased love ones.
With two figures rowing a boat signifying belief in the journey of the soul to afterlife.

35. Mural making- a big artwork usually meant for a wall or wide space.
36. collage- an artwork which includes the gluing of textured natural man made found materials to create a composition.

Tikog- a kind of leaf used for weaving mats of Basey, Samar(in Waray they call it bariw or romblon)

Lara- is tha Samar word for weave


Weaving is called paglalara or pagrarara
Naglalara for the weavers
Burda- is the word for to embroider on the mats
Pu-so or bodbod- is the woven container of the glutinous rice or puto, bibingka in Visayas.
Salugin- the traditional Tagbanua attire made of pounded bark of trees.
Sinamay- fabric made of woven abaca twine.
Torotot- handmade whistle
Banig- hand-woven mat of various local materials, the most is found in BASEY.
Patadyong-the wrap around hand-woven skirt of Visayans which has a chequered pattern.
Kapis- shell used for various crafts and for the windows of local houses.
Pinya- the fiber extracted from the pineapple leaves and used as fine fabric for the barong tagalog.
Weaving- the handmade craft of using warp and weft strips or string to create a fabric or mat.
Panay-one of the largest islands of the archipelago lying South of Romblon. It composed the provinces of Iloilo, Antique,
Aklan, Capiz, and the island of Guimaras.
Maskara Festival-famous festival in Bacolod.
Cebu- is the oldest settlement established by the Spaniards and second most important Metropolitan in the Philippines.also
popular because of their production of GUITAR
Bohol-known for its old Spanish churches and watchtowers.

Sarimanok- the Maranao mythical bird with a fish in its beak or at its claws and intricately carved wings made of wood or
bronze.
Okir/ukkil- the wood carving designs of the Maranao and Tausug.
Refers to a geometric and flowing designs based on leaf and vine patterns.
Types of Okir
Okir a dato- male design

Torogan-a elite Maranao house that is shaped like a prow of a boat intricately carved with the Naga or sarimanok motif and
brightly colore and symbolized power and prestige.
Panulong- the extended beams of a torogan.
Kulintang- a set of bossed gongs suspended on a wooden frame and hit with a thick wooden stick to create a unique
resonating sound.
Malong- is the tubular multi-purpose garment worn by the different groups in Mindanao, decorated by an embroidered
narrow panel called langket with pako rabong or okir design.
Maitum jars- secondary burial jars.
Unique because the human heads that decorate the cover have different facial features.
Pako rabong- a stylized design based on a vine or fern.
Stylized- deriving a design from a real object and abstracting the design by using lines, shapes and colors that are simplified,
magnified and emphasized.

Maranao- largest and most dominat Muslim group found in Lanao, Sultan Kudarat and Cotabato.
Bajao- Sulu and Tawi-Tawi
Bagobo- eastern uplands of Mindanao and eastern area of Davao del Sur
Bilaan- upland of Davao del Sur
Maguindanao- Maguindanao Province, North and South Cotabato
Mandaya- Southern part of Davao
Mamanwa- in Northern Surigao and Agusan del Norte
Samal- in Sulu, Tawi-tawi and coast of Basilan
Subanen- Zamboanga
Tboli- uplands of South Cotabato
Tausug- Jolo, Tawi-tawi and Coast of Basilan
Tiruray-Eastern part of Maguindanao and near Sultan Kudarat
Yakan- Basilan Island

10. Golden sash- an intricate weaving of thin threads of gold that the ancients mastered in Butuan also part of the Surigao
treasure.
11. Golden dagger handle- has fantastic asymmetric forms that suggest raging flames around the birds head.
12. Tnalak- hand-woven cloth made from finest abaca fibers.
13. Pussuk labbung- saw-tooth design used in making cloth baskets and native sword called kris.
14. Bunga sama-used for table runners monuments for the dead on trunks.
15. Kabban buddi- is a set of geometric shapes used for cushions, pillows, casings, mats and hats.
16. Baggang kettan- combines incised triangles and rectangles used to decorate Kris.
