Course Description:
My goal as an educator is to help students discover and develop their unique intellectual voices and

world beyond high school. All assignments and projects will be grounded in the California Common
Core State Standards (CCSS) for English Language Arts (ELA) and Literacy.

Core Competencies:

1. Independence
2. Critical Thinking & Problem Solving

Expectations and Assessment:

In order for you to be successful in this class, you must take ownership of your learning, invest your
best effort, and challenge yourself to be your best self and do your best work! I do not expect you to
be perfect. However, I DO EXPECT YOU to come prepared to each class with an open mind, a brave
soul, and a willingness to learn from your “mistaks.”

Class Participation (Socratic Seminars, Discussions, Daily Activities 20%)—In order to receive full
credit for participation, I expect you to contribute to all discussions with your thoughts, questions, and
analyses. When I say “contribute,” I do not mean dominate. Please be respectful towards your
classmates and teacher, and practice the art of stepping up, and stepping back. When you’re willing to
listen to others, you’re more likely to actually hear them.

Quizzes and Exams (20%)—Quizzes and exams are meant to assess understanding and
preparedness. Quizzes will be announced at least one day in advance. Exams will be announced at
least one week in advance. If you miss a quiz or exam due to absence/illness, rather than have you
make up the quiz, you will be given an alternative assignment TBD in order to help me assess your
understanding and preparedness and to allow you to make up the credit. You will be allowed to drop
your lowest quiz grade.

Note: If you are chronically “absent” on the day of a quiz or exam, we may need to schedule a
meeting with your parents/guardians, our dean, and our director to come up with a support plan to
help you be as successful as possible in this class.

Reading Presentation/Mini-Lesson (10%)— Each week there will be a reading assignment related to
the themes of our project. With a partner, you will sign up for the reading that interests you most and
create a mini-lesson that explores the reading topics. See rubric.

Presentations will take place on Fridays and must include:
1. Survey of the text (title, length & structure, bibliographic info, intended audience, etc.),
2. Summary/Analysis of the form and content (including main claim and types of evidence used)
3. Bullet Point List of 3-5 major takeaways
4. Visuals to help the class make a visual connection
5. Quoted Passage to unpack
6. Questions for the class

Rhetorical Precís Paragraphs (20%)—During the semester you will write five (5) rhetorical precís
paragraphs (RPPs) on your choice of the assigned readings related to our project. The format for the
RPPs and the selection and submission process will be further explained in class.

Research Paper (10%)—Each student will write a mini-research paper (3-5 pages) on a topic related to
our project. There will be multiple opportunities for revision built into the course schedule.

Final Products (20%)—Each student will earn credit for individual and collaborative components of the
final products related to our project .
Late/Missing Work Policy
My expectation is that you will work to the best of your ability to get every assignment in on time.
However, I understand that life sometimes happens. If you are unable to complete an assignment by
the designated due date, I will mark your assignment as both “missing” and “incomplete” in
PowerSchool. If you need an extension for any reason, you MUST complete a “Request for Extension”
form. You will fill out the form and provide a time span for when you can have the work completed by
and your plan for completing the work. I will only accept late or missing work for up to 2 weeks after
the original due date. Exceptions will be made on a case by case basis.

Plagiarism
“Violations of the Code of Academic Integrity may take several forms. Plagiarism and cheating are two
examples of violations of the Code of Academic Integrity. Plagiarism is typically described as
duplication of another’s work without full acknowledgement of the debt to the original source.
Cheating results in a loss of integrity on the part of the individual committing the act and on the
educational process that is undermined by the act of cheating. It is a violation of the Code of Academic
Integrity for any student to attempt to gain or gain an unfair advantage over another student by unfair
or dishonest means” (High Tech High Parent and Student Handbook, 2019-2020).

Course Materials:
The Constitution of the State of California requires that HTHCV provide a public education to you free
of charge. Subject to certain exceptions, your right to a free public education means that we cannot
require you or your family to purchase materials, supplies, equipment or uniforms for any school
activity.

Many families have asked what supplies their child may need during this school year. Below, we have a
recommended list of supplies that your child may bring to school. Please note that if your child does
not bring the recommended supplies, the school will provide the supplies for them. If you have any
questions/comments about this, please contact us, or Angela Guererro ([email protected]),
the school director.

Suggested Materials list:
● pens (black or blue)
● highlighters
● journal or notebook
● planner/calendar
● 1.5”-3” binder with dividers

Honors
I teach my Engish 4 class as an honors class, and all enrolled students will receive the extra grade boost
at the end of the semester. There will be challenge options built in to each major assignment that
students may complete for extra credit. I am happy to answer any clarifying questions.

R Rated Material
Throughout the 2019-2020 school year, your student/child may view film clips or theatrical performances,
and/or read literature and informational texts that have been rated R for mature themes, language, and/or
subject matter. If you have any questions, I would be happy to speak with you. Please feel free to email
me at [email protected].
