Mission Statement
Monte Vista believes that meaningful education is a shared responsibility involving students,
staff, family and community.  We value a safe, inclusive, fulfilling, and diverse environment in
which students are challenged to achieve their highest potential as ethical, resilient, and engaged
citizens.

Student Learning Outcomes (SLO's)

Students will develop skills in critical thinking and problem solving
Students will learn to communicate effectively utilizing multiple modalities
Students collaborate effectively
Students will be ethical, respectful, and responsible citizens

Course Description and Objectives:

Spanish 2 is a beginning/intermediate level course designed for developing proficiency in
communication in Spanish through reading, writing, listening, and speaking.  Students will work
toward effective communication in a variety of situations both orally and written. Students will
be active members of the discovery process of assimilating the language.  Students will also
explore Spanish speaking cultures.

Materials:
1. Realidades 2
2. A charged or plugged-in device with internet, camera, and microphone.  I will be using a
variety of online resources such as Google Classroom, Go Formative, Kahoot, Quizlet, Flipgrid,
EdPuzzle, Kami, Poll Everywhere, and Quizziz.

*If you have any technology issues here are a few links to use for help:
District IT Support Help with Google Classroom Parent and Student Tutorials

3. Binder with a dedicated section to Spanish or a folder to keep your printed work organized,
paper, pencil, and pens to write during our virtual class.  (Please let me know if you have trouble
obtaining these.)

Grading Policy:
Students will be evaluated on a weighted grading system with the standard 10% grading scale
(100%-97% A+, 96%-94% A, 93%-90% A-, 89%-87% B+, 86%-84%B, etc.) I set my gradebook
to automatically round grades up, so an 89.5% will appear as an A-, and an 89.4 % will appear as
a B+, and so on.  Grades are based on the following:
Weekly Grade:
This portion of the grade reflects how you perform in class on a regular basis.  This includes:
1. On-time attendance in our virtual class.  My expectation is that you are IN class when it
starts.  Please refer to the  Bell Schedule.
2. Oral participation:  Oral participation is essential.  Be prepared to answer at all times.  I
may call on you, or you can volunteer.  I’m not asking for perfection, but I’m looking for
sincere effort. I keep track of every time you answer.  For participation above and beyond
the required number of times each week, students can also earn extra credit points (up to
two points weekly provided that all homework for the week is completed).  This is the
only extra credit opportunity, but it is offered weekly.  The more a student volunteers, the
better his focus in class, the better his Weekly Grade, the better his understanding of the
material, the better his test grades, the better his overall performance in class.  Get my
point?  Daily class participation and focus are important!   Attendance is important to the
Weekly Grade since a student who is absent misses the opportunity to score participation
points and misses the lessons in building comprehension and fluency.
3. On-task focus:  Participate actively in classwork and be on-task effort during class.  Be
prepared for class by having all materials that you would need in an in-person class easily
accessible to you in class every day.  Be prepared with material we covered the day
before and be ready to learn each day.
4. Follow all Virtual Classroom Norms (see below)

Homework:
MV Homework Policy
I assign homework!   I expect it to be complete, done to the best of your ability, and turned in to
Google Classroom before virtual class each day (even if I do not set the time in GC).  I
frequently have you translate an assignment as well so that you focus on the details of the
language.  Using a translating device is cheating and robs you of a learning opportunity.  Do not
use one for more than a word or two in a sentence when you are stuck.  Assignments are listed in
Google Classroom.   Although 15% is not a large portion of your grade, doing your homework
with an honest effort will pay-off in test and quiz results and your overall progress in language
proficiency.  Do not cheat yourself by being lazy with this daily review.  I DO NOT accept late
homework and will give you a zero for incomplete or illegible work.

Assessments (Tests, Quizzes, Projects):

For most chapters, there will be various ways of assessing including, but not limited to quizzes,
tests, and projects. You will be assessed on your listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills.
Dates will be posted in Google Classroom weekly.

Final Assessment:
A cumulative written and/or oral assessment will be given each semester.  I recommend that
students keep their vocabulary lists, notes and hand-outs on grammar, and oral test questions
from each chapter to review throughout the semester so that studying for these exams is not
overwhelming.

I will up-date grades a minimum of every two weeks.  If you feel there is a mistake in your
grade, see me immediately (within the week).
Attendance/Absences: Regular attendance is crucial to learning a foreign language.  If a student
is absent, he is missing valuable lessons and interaction that cannot be made up.  If a student is
absent, it is his responsibility to check Google Classroom for missed assignments.  A student has
one day for each day they are absent to make-up the assignment and must email me at
[email protected] as soon as it is submitted.  No credit will be given due to an unexcused
absence.  Two unexcused absences will lower a student’s final grade by one grade, and I will
refer the student to the administration.  To make up a missed assessment, please email me to set
up an appointment during the Student Support Time.

MV Make-Up Policy:
A student having an excused absence as defined by your student handbook, will be given the
opportunity to make up any assignment missed during the absence period within a reasonable
amount of time.  MVHS defines a reasonable amount of time for these assignments as equal to
the days missed.  For example, a one-day absence would warrant one day to make-up the
corresponding work without penalty.  Students will also be given an opportunity to make up any
missed tests by taking an equivalent exam (not a midterm or final exam) within the time stated in
the teacher’s course policies.  It is important to note that while field trips, athletic contests, and
other school events may excuse a student from class, they do not qualify under the homework
make-up policy.  Therefore, a student is responsible for any missed work on its due date.

Dropping the Course: Per MV Policy

“Students may drop a course within the first 3 weeks of the semester without the class or
grade appearing on the transcript. If a course is dropped after the third week of a
semester, the teacher may give an "NM" grade or an "F" grade depending on the quality
of the student's work to date and provided that proper notice concerning the possibility of
failure has been given to the parents.  Parents may request a teacher- conference to
discuss the implication of the "F" grade.”  (AR 512)

Academic Honesty: MV Policy

Plagiarism is the use of any idea or phrasing of an idea traceable to a single source without
proper acknowledgement. Plagiarism is also turning in someone else’s work as your own or
supplying your work to another student for him/her to use. Cheating is copying homework, web
sites, class work, quiz, and test answers from other students with or without their permission.
Students who work “together” should not have identical work.

Each student is expected to do his own work.  Any student found cheating or allowing another
student to copy his work will be given a 0 for that assignment in addition notifying parents and
administrators.  The second offense will result in the student being dropped from the course with
an F (MV Policy).

In addition, using a translator (i.e., Google Translate) for more than a phrase or having someone
excessively edit your work is also considered cheating.

Virtual Classroom Norms: Since all of our Spanish classes will be live and interactive, it is
important that you have excellent online virtual learning etiquette.  World language courses are
communicative in nature and gestures and facial expressions are a critical component of effective
communication. In order for the class to run smoothly, I will require that all my students follow
certain rules.

1. Log-on using your SRVUSD account with your full name.

2. Be prepared to learn. This means that you are not sitting in bed or have just woken.
Please find a quiet location that facilitates learning.  Have all the materials (textbook,
vocabulary lists, notebooks for taking notes, etc.) that you need for class easily
accessible. This includes having your Zoom app up to date.
3. Sit in front of your computer with the video on at all times.  You should be facing
forward just as you would be in class.  Keep your camera ON, directly on your face. I
want to see YOU; not your ceiling; not your forehead. Everyone should be able to see
your face, so we feel like you are talking to us directly as this is a communicative class.
4. Be fully clothed at all times; pajamas are not appropriate attire for school.
5. Keep your microphone muted unless it is your turn to speak.
6. DO NOT message or text other people or fellow students during class in the chat or on
any other device.  It is obvious when you are unengaged.  Leave your phone in another
room so you are not distracted.  Just as in class, you are not allowed to use your phone in
our virtual classroom.  It distracts you and inhibits your learning.
7. Join class five minutes early. This allows me to ADMIT students to class, take roll, and
begin class on time. If I am admitting you after the start of class, you are late. Those of
you who arrive late are often left sitting in the waiting room because I am busy teaching
and do not see you waiting.  You lose valuable time and don't learn the material
presented.
8. Keep our class link private. Do not share it with anyone outside of class.
9. If you have a question, turn on your microphone and ask. You can also use the Raise your
Hand feature or use the CHAT.  Please do not use the CHAT to talk to friends. Talk to
your friends outside of class on your own time.
10.  Please be ready to respond immediately to all questions I ask the class. You are wasting
everyone's time when I have to repeat your name several times, wait for you to put on
your microphone, then repeat the question because you weren't listening.  I assure you
that you cannot get a passing grade in my class without paying attention.
11.  Turn your music off and take your earbuds out of your ears, unless you are using earbuds
to communicate during our class.
12.  Disruptive or inappropriate students will be removed from the virtual classroom.
13.  Be kind and respectful just like you’d be face to face with others.  Remember, we are
still in class.
14.  I am not recording our class, and I ask that you do not record or take pictures or
screenshots of others in class.
