This study presents two novel frameworks, termed a quasi-modular b-metric space and a non-Archimedean quasi-modular b-metric space, and various topological properties are provided. Using comparison and simulation functions, this paper rigorously proves several fixed point theorems in the non-Archimedean quasi-modular b-metric space. As a useful application, it also establishes Ulam–Hyers stability for the fixed point problem. Finally, this study concludes with a unique solution to a non-linear fractional differential equation, making a substantial contribution to the discipline. Full article

Raptors (Accipitriformes, Falconiformes and Strigiformes) are important for ecological niches as bioindicators and an apex predator; however, their global populations have continuously decreased due to human activities, habitat loss and contagious diseases. Avian malaria that may cause the negative impact on raptors’ health may also contribute to the declining of raptor populations. This study reported malaria’s molecular prevalence and genetic diversity in wild-caught and rehabilitated raptors in the Kasetsart University Raptor Rehabilitation Unit. In total, 109 raptors from 18 provinces of Thailand were classified into two groups, which included 78 diurnal raptors (DIRs) in Accipitriformes and 31 nocturnal raptors (NORs) in Strigiformes. Each ethylenediaminetetraacetic (EDTA) blood sample (0.5–1 mL) was tested through haematological analyses and polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based detection to assess parasites’ health impacts. Amplicons of PCR positive samples were analysed for a nucleotide sequencing and phylogenetic relationships. The overall prevalence of avian malaria was low at 3.67% (4/109) (95% CI: 1.44–9.06%), with a prevalence of 3.86% (3/78) (95% CI: 1.32–10.70%) in DIRs and 3.23% (1/31) (95% CI: 1.32–10.70%) in NORs. Most of the infected samples were from southern Thailand. This suggested that the raptors in humid habitats are more vulnerable to the malarial infection, which was likely associated with vector and parasite abundance. Clinical appearances and haematological examinations demonstrated that raptors could tolerate the infection and only became asymptomatic and subclinically infected. This study is the first report of the infection of avian malaria in Cinerous Vulture, Himalayan Vulture and Barred Eagle Owl in Thailand, providing baseline information in preparedness for the disease diagnostic and further study of avian malaria in some endangered raptor species. In this study, we significantly extend the concept of modular metric-like spaces to introduce the notion of b-metric-like spaces. Furthermore, by incorporating a binary relation R, we develop the framework of R-modular b-metric-like spaces. We establish a groundbreaking fixed point theorem for certain extensions of Geraghty-type contraction mappings, incorporating both 𝒵 simulation function and E-type contraction within this innovative structure. Moreover, we present several novel outcomes that stem from our newly defined notations. Afterwards, we introduce an unprecedented concept, the graphical modular b-metric-like space, which is derived from the binary relation R. Finally, we examine the existence of solutions for a class of functional equations that are pivotal in dynamic programming and in solving initial value problems related to the electric current in an RLC parallel circuit. The Role of Endometrial Sampling before Hysterectomy in Premenopausal Women with Abnormal Uterine Bleeding

Background/Objectives: An endometrial sampling is recommended for patients experiencing abnormal uterine bleeding above the age of 40 or 45. Valid risk prediction models are needed to accurately assess the risk of endometrial cancer and avoid an unnecessary endometrial biopsy in premenopausal women. We aimed to assess the necessity and usefulness of preoperative endometrial sampling by evaluating premenopausal women who underwent hysterectomy for abnormal uterine bleeding after preoperative endometrial sampling at our clinic. Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 339 patients who underwent preoperative endometrial sampling and subsequently underwent hysterectomy due to abnormal uterine bleeding. Detailed gynecologic examinations, patient histories, and reports of endometrial sampling and hysterectomy were recorded. Cohen’s Kappa (κ) statistic was utilized to evaluate the concordance between histopathological results from an endometrial biopsy and hysterectomy. Results: The mean age of the cohort was 47 ± 4 years. Endometrial biopsies predominantly revealed benign findings, with 137 (40.4%) cases showing proliferative endometrium and 2 (0.6%) cases showing endometrial cancer. Following hysterectomy, final pathology indicated proliferative endometrium in 208 (61.4%) cases, with 7 (2.1%) cases showing endometrioid cancer. There was a statistically significant but low level of concordance between histopathological reports of endometrial biopsy and hysterectomy results (Kappa = 0.108; p < 0.001). Significant differences were observed only in the body mass index of patients based on hysterectomy results (p = 0.004). When demographic characteristics were compared with cancer incidence, smoking status and preoperative endometrial biopsy findings showed statistically significant differences (p = 0.042 and p = 0.010, respectively). Conclusions: The concordance between the pathological findings of a preoperative endometrial biopsy and hysterectomy is low. Body mass index is an important differentiating factor between benign histopathologic findings of endometrium and endometrial neoplasia. Moreover, adenomyosis was found to be associated with endometrial cancer cases. The current approach to premenopausal women with abnormal uterine bleeding, which includes a routine endometrial biopsy, warrants re-evaluation by international societies and experts. Full article

Background/Objectives: The effectiveness of night braces alone or in combination with other treatments for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis remains unclear. This systematic review study aimed to review and analyze the available literature to determine whether night braces are an effective treatment for idiopathic scoliosis. Methods: A total of 162 databases, including Cochrane Library (reviews, protocols, trials), Web of Science, PubMed, Medline, Scopus, PEDro, CINAHL (EBSCO), Ovid and Google Scholar, were searched for published articles from inception to February 2024. The available literature was screened by the following terms: “scoliosis and night-time brace”, “scoliosis and night brace”, “scoliosis and part-time bracing”, “scoliosis and Providence” and “scoliosis and Charleston”. Results: Twenty studies were included; only one study was a randomized controlled trial, and most of the studies were retrospectively designed. Providence, Charleston and Boston braces were used as night braces. The Cobb angle was evaluated in all studies, and Cobb angle change after treatment and surgical treatment rates were the parameters that were evaluated the most. In one study, the angle of trunk rotation, quality of life, perception of spinal appearance, and physical activity level were measured. In one study, sagittal plane assessments were performed in addition to the Cobb angle. Conclusions: The results of this review suggest that there is no evidence to support the use of night braces in the treatment of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. Randomized controlled trials with a well-designed methodology are needed to determine the efficacy of night braces. Full article

Advantageous variants of the SARS-CoV-2 virus have arisen through mutations, particularly on a single amino acid basis. These point mutations can cause changes in the structure of SARS-CoV-2 and affect the efficiency of interaction with the ACE2 protein. N501Y and E484K mutations affecting binding by ACE2 have been widely observed. This study aimed to predict SARS-CoV-2 mutations that could be as effective as N501Y and E484K and pose a danger due to their high contagiousness. Experimental data on SARS-CoV-2 and ACE2 binding and stability were associated with different amino acid properties and integrated into machine learning and computational biology techniques. As a result of the analyses made in algorithms, N501M, Q414A, N354K, Q498H and N460K have been predicted to be likely to have a dangerous effect. The N501W mutations are most likely to have dangerous effects on the spread of the coronavirus. We suggest that attention should be paid to the position 501 mutation since this position is repeated in the lists of mutations that the algorithm detected as dangerous. G446, G447, Y505, T500, Q493, Y473, and G476 were determined as the positions where dangerous variants could be seen as a result of the analyses of the multiple interaction data created with the ACE2 and RBD interaction data. The 13 dangerous positions and mutations have been detected to accurately describe the position of the mutations caused by the Omicron variant and were among the known dangerous mutations similar to those occurring at Q498, G446, Y505 and Q493 positions. A successful public-private partnership (PPP) relies heavily on effective risk assessment, given the intricate risk factors and contractual arrangements involved. While quantitative risk assessment methods have received significant attention in the PPP literature, qualitative risk assessment, the sector’s predominant preference, remains underexplored, causing a low level of applicability of academic studies and indicating a noticeable research gap. A qualitative risk assessment tool prototype, Riesgo, is developed in this paper as a customizable, knowledge-based digital risk register incorporating a pre-defined template that guides users using PPP risk factors, compensation and mitigation options, project information requirements, and risk register items. This paper presents the proposed system architecture, explains the research steps adopted in determining the system elements, and delineates the system functions through a use case developed to illustrate the process and information flows. The prototype was verified by 13 PPP experts who employed it for risk assessment, and their feedback was utilized for further development. A validation survey of 21 professionals affirmed Riesgo’s usability and applicability in the industry. The customizable and knowledge-based prototype has the potential to streamline effective risk assessment and guide the users across various PPP phases, such as early risk assessment, feasibility studies, contract preparation, and monitoring. Theodor (“Ted”) Otto Diener (* 28 February 1921 in Zürich, Switzerland; † 28 March 2023 in Beltsville, MD, USA) pioneered research on viroids while working at the Plant Virology Laboratory, Agricultural Research Service, USDA, in Beltsville. He coined the name viroid and defined viroids’ important features like the infectivity of naked single-stranded RNA without protein-coding capacity. During scientific meetings in the 1970s and 1980s, viroids were often discussed at conferences together with other “subviral pathogens”. This term includes what are now called satellite RNAs and prions. Satellite RNAs depend on a helper virus and have linear or, in the case of virusoids, circular RNA genomes. Prions, proteinaceous infectious particles, are the agents of scrapie, kuru and some other diseases. Many satellite RNAs, like viroids, are non-coding and exert their function by thermodynamically or kinetically controlled folding, while prions are solely host-encoded proteins that cause disease by misfolding, aggregation and transmission of their conformations into infectious prion isoforms. In this memorial, we will recall the work of Ted Diener on subviral pathogens. Full article

(1) Background: Semi-hanging and muscle cylinder exercises have been defined as scoliosis-specific corrective exercises. The aim of this study was to evaluate the immediate effect of muscle cylinder and semi-hanging exercises on the angle of trunk rotation in patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). (2) Methods: Twenty-seven patients with AIS with a mean age of 18.6 years were retrospectively analyzed. The angle of trunk rotation (ATR) values were measured before and after performing semi-hanging and standing muscle cylinder exercises. Both exercises were performed for three to five respiratory cycles. The semi-hanging exercise was performed first, followed by the muscle cylinder exercise, in this order, in all participants. For statistical analysis, the Wilcoxon signed-rank test was used to analyze ATR changes after the exercises, and the Kruskal–Wallis test was used to compare ATR changes according to the main curve location. (3) Results: The thoracic, thoracolumbar and lumbar maximum ATR values were significantly increased after the semi-hanging exercise (p < 0.001) and decreased after the muscle cylinder exercise (p < 0.001). The ATR change was greater in the lumbar region than in the thoracic and thoracolumbar regions. (4) Conclusion: The results of this study of a small group of patients emphasized that one of the scoliosis-specific corrective exercises, the standing muscle cylinder exercise, improved ATR, while the other, the semi-hanging exercise, worsened ATR in patients with AIS. It is recommended that each scoliosis-specific corrective exercise be evaluated and redesigned to maximize the three-dimensional corrective effect, considering the biomechanics of the spine and the pathomechanics of scoliosis. Cancer is still the leading cause of death in the world despite the developing research and treatment opportunities. Failure of these treatments is generally associated with cancer stem cells (CSCs), which cause metastasis and are defined by their resistance to radio- and chemotherapy. Although known stem cell isolation methods are not sufficient for CSC isolation, they also bring a burden in terms of cost. The aim of this study is to develop a high-efficiency, low-cost, specific method for cancer stem cell isolation with magnetic functional nanoparticles. This study, unlike the stem cell isolation techniques (MACS, FACS) used today, was aimed to isolate cancer stem cells (separation of CD133+ cells) with nanoparticles with specific affinity and modification properties. For this purpose, affinity-based magnetic nanoparticles were synthesized and characterized by providing surface activity and chemical reactivity, as well as making surface modifications necessary for both lectin affinity and metal affinity interactions. In the other part of the study, synthesized and characterized functional polymeric magnetic nanoparticles were used for the isolation of CSC from the human osteosarcoma cancer cell line (SAOS-2) with a cancer stem cell subpopulation bearing the CD133 surface marker. The success and efficiency of separation after stem cell isolation were evaluated via the MACS and FACS methods. As a result, when the His-graft-mg-p(HEMA) nanoparticle was used at a concentration of 0.1 µg/mL for 106 and 108 cells, superior separation efficiency to commercial microbeads was obtained. Ambient sun drying is the method most used by Indigenous communities for preserving fruits and seeds harvested from the forest. It is an effective method to increase the shelf-life of highly perishable foods and prevent spoilage until important bioactive compounds can be extracted at distant locations. The ambient sun drying kinetics and oil extraction of the pulp and seeds of commercially important oleaginous fruit directly obtained from the rainforests and swamps of Guyana, namely Astrocaryum vulgare (Awara), Astrocaryum aculeatum (Kuru), Oenocarpus bacaba (Turu), Mauritia flexuosa (Ite), Euterpe oleracea (Acai), Caryocar nuciferum (Souari), Attalea maripa (Kukrit), and Carapa guianensis (Crabwood), were studied. The fruits were dried under ambient conditions from initial moisture contents ranging from 24–71% to a final moisture content of 5%. Three models, the Lewis model, the modified Page model, and the standard logistic function (SLF) model, were utilized to model the drying kinetics and to estimate the parameters governing the drying process. These models were demonstrated to fit the experimental data with excellent goodness of fit (>0.98). The SLF, never used before to model drying kinetics, was observed to be the best-suited model overall, with the highest correlation coefficient and the least Chi-square (χ2). Depending on the fruit type, the estimated point where the maximum drying rate occurs varies from 35 min to 350 min for sun-dried fruit pulp and up to 4000 min for sun-dried kernels. The steepness of the drying curves varied from −0.5 to −3.5 g/min. The results of this work will aid in the design, development, optimization, and control of the ambient drying processes of economically and functionally important oleaginous forest fruits. This knowledge will assist in addressing the key challenge of spoilage faced by Indigenous communities in the preservation of tropical oleaginous fruits and seeds, possibly aiding in the preservation of functional characteristics of the extracted oils and adducing to the sustainable economic utilization of such fruit. The aim of this study was to determine the main cognitive distortions observed in panic disorder (PD), generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and social anxiety disorder (SAD) and to investigate the impact of cognitive distortions on diagnoses, depression levels, disorder type and severity of anxiety. This study consisted of 150 clinical (50 PD, 50 GAD, 50 SAD) and 91 healthy control participants. A sociodemographic data form, the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), the Dysfunctional Attitudes Scale (DAS), the Cognitive Distortions Scale (CDS) and the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) scales were administered to all participants. It was found that cognitive distortions were higher in individuals with PD, GAD and SAD. The PD, SAD and GAD groups were similar for “catastrophizing”, “mindreading”, “all or nothing thinking”, “overgeneralization”, “should statements” and “emotional reasoning”. “Personalization”, “labeling” and “minimizing or disqualifying the positive” were observed at a higher severity in the SAD group compared to the PD group, and “mental filter” was observed at a higher severity in the GAD group compared to the PD group. Our findings emphasize the need to address cognitive distortions in PD, GAD and SAD treatment. The evaluation of cognitive distortions specific to anxiety disorders is significant in guiding therapy goals and pioneering new research. Full article

Metal-Chelated Polymeric Nanomaterials for the Removal of Penicillin G Contamination

We developed selective and relatively low-cost metal-chelated nanoparticle systems for the removal of the penicillin G (Pen G) antibiotic, presented for the first time in the literature. In the nanosystem, poly(glycidyl methacrylate) nanoparticles were synthesized by a surfactant-free emulsion polymerization method and covalently bound with a tridentate-chelating ligand, iminodiacetic acid, based on the immobilized metal chelate affinity technique. It was modified with Cu2+, a chelating metal, to make Pen G specific. Metal-chelated nanoparticles were characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, energy dispersive spectrometry, zeta dimensional analysis, and scanning electron microscopy technology. Optimization studies of the Pen G removal were conducted. As a result of this study, Pen G removal with the p(GMA)-IDA-Cu2+ nanoparticle reached its maximum adsorption capacity of 633.92 mg/g in the short time of 15 min. The Pen G adsorption of p(GMA)-IDA-Cu2+ was three times more than that of the p(GMA) nanoparticles and two times more than that of the ampicillin adsorption. In addition, there was no significant decrease in the adsorption capacity of Pen G resulting from the repeated adsorption–desorption process of metal-chelated nanoparticles over five cycles. The metal-chelated nanoparticle had an 84.5% ability to regain its ability to regenerate the product with its regeneration capability, making the widespread use of the system very convenient in terms of reducing cost, an important factor in removal processes. Antioxidant Supplementation on Male Fertility—A Systematic Review

Our aim was to review the current literature regarding the effect of antioxidant supplementation (AS) on male fertility parameters, as AS is commonly used to treat male infertility due to the availability and affordability of antioxidants in many parts of the world. Materials and methods: PubMed, Medline, and Cochrane electronic bibliographies were searched using the modified Preferred Reporting Items for Systemic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines to evaluate studies on the benefit of antioxidant therapy on infertile men. Results were analyzed regarding the following aspects: (a) ingredient and dose; (b) potential mechanism of action and rationale for use; and (c) effect on various reported outcomes. Results: Thus, 29 studies found a substantial positive effect of AS on outcomes of assisted reproductive therapy (ART), WHO semen parameters, and live-birth rate. Carnitines, Vitamin E and C, N-acetyl cysteine, coenzyme Q10, selenium, zinc, folic acid, and lycopene were beneficial ingredients. Nevertheless, some studies did not show a substantial change in one or more factors. Conclusion: AS seems to have a positive effect on male fertility. Environmental factors may play an increasing role in fertility. Further studies are needed to determine the optimal AS combination and the influence of environmental factors. Full article

Background: Although the number of studies showing the efficacy of conservative treatment in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis has increased, studies with long-term follow-up are very limited. The aim of this study was to present the long-term effects of a conservative management method including exercise and brace in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis patients. Methods: This retrospective cohort study included patients with idiopathic scoliosis who presented at our department and were followed up for at least 2 years after completing the treatment. The main outcome measurements were the Cobb angle and angle of trunk rotation (ATR). Results: The cohort participants were 90.4% female, with a mean age of 11 years and the maximum Cobb angle was mean 32.1°. The mean post-treatment follow-up period was 27.8 months (range 24–71 months). The improvements after treatment in mean maximum Cobb angle (p < 0.001) and ATR (p = 0.001) were statistically significant. At the end of treatment, the maximum Cobb angle was improved in 88.1% of the patients and worsened in 11.9% compared to baseline. In the long-term follow-up evaluations, 83.3% of the curvatures remained stable. Conclusions: The results of this study showed that moderate idiopathic scoliosis in growing adolescents can be successfully halted with appropriate conservative treatment and that long-term improvement is largely maintained.
