Canadian Foreign Stock Investment Rises for 6th Month
Foreign investors increased their exposure to Canadian securities by a net C$9.97 billion in August of 2024, a sixth consecutive month of positive change, and slightly ahead of market expectations of a $9.5 billion increase in exposure. The rise in investment was predominantly driven by the acquisition of bonds (C$21.4 billion), lifting the rise in Canadian debt purchases by C$21.9 billion. This was enough to offset the C$11.9 billion divestment in Canadian equities. In turn, Canadian investors increased their exposure to foreign securities by C$12.3 billion in the period.

Investors Buy Canadian Securities for 5th Month
Foreign investors increased their exposure to Canadian securities by a net $10.98 billion in July 2024, a fifth consecutive month of investment, and compared to a net investment of $5.2 billion in the previous month. The July investment was primarily concentrated in Canadian debt securities, particularly bonds. Non-resident investors acquired $9.1 billion in Canadian debt securities, with the majority directed toward government bonds (+$7.9 billion) and private corporate bonds (+$5.2 billion). Foreign investment in federal government bonds has surged to $59.4 billion so far in 2024, a sharp increase from the $12.5 billion seen over the same period in 2023. Additionally, foreign investment in Canadian equities reached $1.9 billion in July, following two months of divestment, driven by shares in the trade and transportation sectors, as well as companies in the management and enterprise industries.
