Thanks
for the comment on police shoot white van man. Didn't think it was instantly huffable which is why i asked savethemooses to restore it. Perhaps it is too biased to good 'ol GB for him to get the references. Hopefully it can stand as is and the NRV is removed. Anyway here's something I found down the back of the sofa, hope you like it.

I fixed Uncyclopedia:How To Get Started Editing
Now it's non offensive. Less funny, in my opinion, but non offensive. Personally, I thought this was a comedy site, and we weren't supposed to be offended by anything in the articles here. I mean, we have an article called Niggerlodeon for c- anyway, moving on . . . What do you think of the new edit? And do you have any advice on how not to get banned, but still try to promote this thing in some meaningful way? --Hrodulf 15:08, 1 June 2006 (UTC)
- By the way, love that you changed the {{UKer}} text to include the spelling joke. I think I was on to something when I came up with that :D --Hrodulf 15:10, 1 June 2006 (UTC) (Oh, it turns out that was Splaka's edit to the template code itself, I assumed it was you doing a custom edit. Oops.) --Hrodulf 16:24, 1 June 2006 (UTC)
- Well, Uncyclopedia:How To Get Started Editing seems to be a bit more thorough now. This is probably a good thing, I think. As for the claims that it was patronising, I wouldn't have been offended by it, but then again this site is nothing compared to some of the message boards I have visited. In other words, I didn't think it was that offensive. But I think it can only be a good thing to remove anything that could be perceived as offensive to new users as you have done.
As for the issue of where to promote it, I would be less direct in your approach. Don't try to be too bold, just mention it in conversation with newer users who you think might need some help. Apart from this, it's up on the help index (I think), and people will find it themselves if they are stuck. I think that you've done all you can really. There's only so far you can go with these things. I wouldn't be disheartened, though, I'm sure that what you have done so far will help a lot of people. --Hindleyite | PL | GUN | WOTM | Converse 15:26, 1 June 2006 (UTC)

- Ok, I'll just leave it alone, and if people want to put it into {{subst:Welcome}} that's fine with me, but somehow I doubt that is going to happen, and unfortunately because I was clueless I think I made things a lot worse, on the whole. *shrug* that's life, I suppose. --Hrodulf 15:37, 1 June 2006 (UTC)

- Fortunately, the good people of Uncyclopedia don't hold us in such high esteem that they won't label our crap as such. In that respect, this website is superior to the real world, where we might be surrounded by icky yes-men who'd fall all over themselves to convince us that our grocery list really ought to be adapted into a full-length screenplay. At Uncyclopedia, writing articles is not a requirement, but it certainly is a fun and easy way to express your creativity. To write an article, it's recommended that you start it in your userspace (for example, User:Hindleyite/Article about stuff) so you can edit it at your leisure. If you decide to create it in the cold world of mainspace, make sure it is in accordance with the policies laid out above, and if you're not done put the "Work-In-Progress" template - {{construction}} - onto it as well.
If you need help, ask me on my talk page, ask at the Dump, or ask an administrator on their talk page. Additionally, the Uncyclopedian Adopt-a-Noob program is there to bring experienced editors straight to you. Simply put {{adoptme}} on your Userpage to join. yours is much easyier to edit than mine as i was using png images to get the text, its not too hard to make a page using paint though its the clock at the top that took a long time, what we could do is use your formatting method of spitting up oall the parts to the page and then use images to make up the text Fixedsys font looks more authentic, i can make the clock into a sperate gif and i can provide all the headers and so on to match--Sir Silent Penguin "your site makes no sence" The illusion is complete 14:07, 23 June 2006 (UTC)
- iv uploaded a version of the counter without the text bar called TeletextTimer.gif--Sir Silent Penguin "your site makes no sence" The illusion is complete 14:25, 23 June 2006 (UTC)
- its good but by using gif images you compleatly defeated the point of the old template being very flexable, i had tryed using your teletext formated page as a template for an attempt of my own, only thing with yours is the graphics have lost their crudeness, i Noticed however you put a error into the logo at the top which adds an extra touch, it might be possible to incoperate that and other things around the original page, and then built a linked together network around it using your template from earlier. i had a stab at using your page on User:Silent Penguin/Teletext--Sir Silent Penguin "your site makes no sence" The illusion is complete 15:45, 23 June 2006 (UTC)
- Maybe, I see what you mean about it losing the flexibility, but I think using animated gifs is the only way to incorporate the automatic scrolling to the next page. If we're going to do a number of these pages, then not all of them necessarily need to have the animated GIF. I was just trying it out to see what it would look like. --Hindleyite | PL | GUN | WOTM | Reefer Desk - Use it | Converse 15:51, 23 June 2006 (UTC)
- i belive we should keep the current page as it is and use your old method for other pages and then gif's for scrooling pages theniv uploaded a clock and a logo bar to match the current page as it is if thats helpful, but still use your blue teletext logo in the bar with the clock, iv also made a nother page UnTeletext/673 which you could take apart and put back together so it is in the old formatting. your animated gif looked very good however i belive that it needs to be slightly larger.--Sir Silent Penguin "your site makes no sence" The illusion is complete 16:09, 23 June 2006 (UTC)

Yeah their much better now, what i belive we should do is leave the current article as it is and place artiles around that namespace so the main page will be Unteletext/p100 and so on,--Sir Silent Penguin "your site makes no sence" The illusion is complete 17:53, 24 June 2006 (UTC)
- You mean leave the UnTeletext article as it is? That could work, but only if it had the same design as the rest of the Teletext pages, if you know what I mean. I think we should keep the concept and redo the GIF animation in the style of the other Teletext pages. That's if you want to, but I think it would function better. --Hindleyite | PL | GUN | WOTM | Reefer Desk - Use it | Converse 18:01, 24 June 2006 (UTC)
there isnt much that needs to be done to the animated gif to make it look like the origanal pages, just to adust the bar at the top to match other than that it should pritty much fit it to the rest i can change it to match the other pages to match quite easily, i can redo the about page to match sometime, either tomorrow, or munday afternoon, ill se how i get on, its just a case of changing the bar font and replacing the clock shouldnt be too hard, just time consuming, the only problem i can see is that the date is on the new format so i may try to split it up into two gifs that are indepenent of each other but timed together and stick the clock and page counter at the ends, because the page loading adds to the realism,it should help make the gifs much smaller as well.--Sir Silent Penguin "your site makes no sence" The illusion is complete 19:32, 24 June 2006 (UTC)
- I'll wait to see what you want to do with the UnTeletext page before adding anything. In the end, it's up to you what you want to do, dude, because you created the article. --Hindleyite | PL | GUN | WOTM | Reefer Desk - Use it | Converse 19:46, 24 June 2006 (UTC)
after iv made a repacement page we can do this one of two ways, i can write the bulk and then you can format it, your great at that or we can share the work together and check each others work afterward, its your choise, it's probably good to wait untill i fix the old page before we start making new pages and confusing things, i dont mind if you want to write half and i write half though so its your choise.--Sir Silent Penguin "your site makes no sence" The illusion is complete 09:53, 25 June 2006 (UTC)
- iv made a replacement page in my user space and the images are a bit messed up but that isnt the point, its so show what it would look like, i belive it looks too clinical when is made to look like the template, i liked the crude effect of the old gif. i think i might stick to the old page rather than try to over do the article, making it like a zork thing may be taking it too far and spoil the effect, thanks for your help though and i may update the old gif with your clock because your clock look much better, but at the moment i like it as it is. i hope you understand where im coming from, it would be like making a sequal to a film, you can have too much sometimes and i think thatthis would be that kind of situation.--Sir Silent Penguin "your site makes no sence" The illusion is complete 16:59, 26 June 2006 (UTC)
- Oh, OK. As I said, because you created the article first, it's up to you. I would have implemented it the way I have set it up, but I think the way you want to do it is great and will function OK. A bit of a pity, though, because I've been having some fun making up some pages. Oh, well... --Hindleyite | PL | GUN | WOTM | Reefer Desk - Use it | Converse 18:08, 26 June 2006 (UTC)

- Sure, go ahead with your idea. However I think there might be a small problem with resizing the animated GIF. Once that is sorted it will be good. --Hindleyite | PL | GUN | WOTM | Reefer Desk - Use it | Converse 19:33, 26 June 2006 (UTC)
i was going to stick with the current article as it is, i assume you are refurring to the one on my user space, that one is messed up, or are you reffuring to the current article?--Sir Silent Penguin "your site makes no sence" The illusion is complete 19:37, 26 June 2006 (UTC)

We've hit a snag
from my talk page:
What... are... you... doing?
( 'scribed from dump) Hrol, I'm in the right mindset to ban you right now. If you'd read the beginner's guide, you'd well know that a lack of response does not imply consent on the part of the administrators. In the future, don't do things like this again, especially considering that the last link has NO use whatsoever, the middle link is of questionable use, and the tone and usefulness of the first article is certainly in contention. If you need admin approval that badly. bother one of us on the talk page.--Sir Flammable KUN (Na Naaaaa...) 21:08, 31 May 2006 (UTC)
- If anyone has any objections to the article, I'll make whatever changes are desired. And if you want the links wiped, I'll wipe them. I was trying to be proactive and I thought what I was doing was useful. You're entitled to disagree. If you want it to be taken down, it will be taken down, and if you want it changed, I'll change it. --Hrodulf 22:19, 31 May 2006 (UTC)
Any comments? Looks like the new user project might be dying/dead, as well as the Howto page . . . --Hrodulf 22:23, 31 May 2006 (UTC)
Here's most of my response to the above. Again, your comments/opinion are appreciated concerning this matter.
":::Some background appears to be in order. This was not a referendum on the HowTo article, which was formed as a result of a previous village dump conversation [[1]], about one month ago. Recently, in resonse to comments on my talk page by Hindelyte http://en.uncyclopedia.co/wiki/User_talk:Hrodulf#A_few_things, I added a few links to a project I had already started to better publicize the HowTo page, which I felt was a useful guide to teach n00bs how to be able to develop articles without having to be subjected to the high standards and inevitable criticism that goes with composing in the main space. Not everyone is capable of sitting down and coming up with a golden chestnut like AAAAAAAAA! or kitten huffing on their first day here. I thought I was helping to smooth that transition.
.The actions I took regarding inserting subst: into the templates I had already placed were in response to Splaka's comments complaining that I had not fulfilled his request to fix the templates. He told me it was inappropriate and confusing to link to a subpage of my userpage as I was doing. So I fixed that as per his request http://en.uncyclopedia.co/wiki/User_talk:Hrodulf#User:Hrodulf.2FHowToRef2.
- While I understand your concern about the links and the page itself, I am always open to suggestions as to how to improve the page, and how or if it should be "marketed" to new users. As you may have noticed, I've been putting a lot of work into this, and I have no problem with taking other user's opinions and thoughts into consideration as to whether, and if, this should be done, or whether it should instead be done in another way. But I'd like to point out one more thing, before closing. Please review Frogturd's userpage and talk page. Did we do a good job assimilating this user? No. He was driven out of here by the poisonous environment for n00bs that exists in the main space. I'm not criticizing the way the site is run, it's necessary to keep the quality up and vandalism and crap down. I am criticizing that we havn't been doing more to give n00bs a way to compose on the site, with the benefit of being able to work with the wiki-html formatting, without jumping down their throat if their first attempt isn't on the level of AAAAAAAAAA!. I tried to do something about it, and obviously it's been controversial. Let's have a discussion about this and decide what the best thing to do is, whether it's changing the article, changing the links, or throwing it all out and starting over. I'm open to any suggestions that work. --Hrodulf 22:42, 31 May 2006 (UTC)"
--Hrodulf 22:45, 31 May 2006 (UTC)
- I think I have to disagree that Frogturd was "driven out". With regards to Mr FrogTurd, as much as I will try to give people some slack over their contributions and their behaviour within Uncyclopedia there is a point that that particular user crossed. He was given a chance to toe the line and offered an olive branch. He choose to not accept that. We've got to accept that that happens from time to time.
- Many contributors to Uncyclopedia are here to make the site better, and seek to protect the best of what we have here. Sadly we have some individuals who do not share the same thoughts. As an Admin it is my job to protect the good and to kick the bad into touch. At the end of the day, its a judgement call. Mostly we get it right, sometimes we get it wrong.
- Its great that you already have the same love for Uncyclopedia that many others of us share, the only thing you need to accept is that to make an omlette you need to break a few eggs. :) -- Sir Mhaille (talk to me)
- I was concerned that you'd consider my citing of the Frogturd situation an attack on you personally, and I did not intend it as such. And yes, his article was hopelessly unfunny. My point was not that you gave him a "hard time"(tm)jtaylor1, but that if I'd gotten him to read about how to create subpages sooner, maybe he would have made his absurd and stupid article in a subpage, and eventually gone on to actually do something funny in the future. I guess we'll never know for sure. I do know that we need n00bs who eventually become committed and skilled contributors to the site for uncyclopedia to improve, and right now I think we're losing too many before they even get started, because they don't know what to do, so they do the wrong things, and get into big trouble. You have to remember that uncyclopedia is competing with television, food, sex, video games, and the rest of real and fantasy life for these peoples' attention. Make it too hard, too intimidating, too . . . for want of a better word, adminny for them, and they'll give up and watch Friends instead. We all want what's best for the site. I have a different vision of that than some people here apparantly. I'm willing to have a conversation about it, and to take other people's opinions into account, including and up to taking down the whole "new user project" and starting over, with consensus and everybody on board. Obviously, this was to an extent already taking place, since Splaka was involved in shaping the project, as was Hindleyite; that process is continuing now. I'm sure the end result will be better for everyone concerned. I hope you don't mind that I am sporking this over to the dump, since it's relevant. --Hrodulf 23:56, 31 May 2006 (UTC)
- Hrodulf, I wasn't taking your comments as an attack, I was just citing the individual case that you mentioned. With regards to the action of individuals, for the most part no Admin will just stamp all over someone unless there is some history of a specific type of behaviour. We keep a close eye on what is happening, who is doing what, interacting with whom, their fellow conspirators, shoe size, etc, before action is taken. That action, in the majority of cases, is a friendly warning. Balance and Harmony are restored and the site continues to grow and improve. The duty of any Admin is to act as Judge, Jury and sometimes Executioner for the betterment of the site. I would say that we have a good record of nuturing those committed and skilled contributors, as well as dealing with potential troublemakers. Your vision is probably not too different to many other people here.... -- Sir Mhaille (talk to me)
- I can see that, but I'm mainly concerned that, despite the fact that it isn't perfect, based on what's happening in the forum now, we might end up losing the howto article, and I don't think there's anything on the site that really does what it does. If there's problems with the content and style, fine, I can fix it. This was around for a month and nobody approached me and asked me to change a word of it. I added some new material recently because I had learned new things and had new experiences, and wanted to share what I had discovered. I'm honestly confused, although in retrospect, not surprised by the amount of hostility I'm receiving, and to some extent it is a barometer of the fact that what I'm doing is a different direction for the site; like I've been saying, I'm willing to discuss what should be done to resolve these issues, but I think that my point about n00bs needing some basic guidance that isn't in the other instructional pages in an easy to find way, like how to create sub-pages, is critical. As Hindelyite said, better than I could in To Get Started Editing http://en.uncyclopedia.co/wiki/User_talk:Hindleyite/1#Uncyclopedia:How To Get Started Editing,
":Yes, I have been following this issue quite a bit and think that I personally would have benefitted from reading a page like this when I first joined. The average newbie can't be bothered to trawl through the HTBFANJS, Beginner's guide (too long) etc. etc. I know I couldn't anyway. As someone who had a little bit of experience of Wikiformatting, previously being a member of Wikipedia, I knew a lot of the basics but didn't know about creating user subpages and such like. I wouldn't dis the admins because they are only doing what they believe is best for the wiki, but they can be a bit stubborn sometimes. The best we can do is perhaps 'clean up' the page to conform to their standards, but continue referring newbies 'unofficially' to it under good faith. This would get some recognition for it, but it is missing the primary target of the article: the complete newbies that have not yet registered and are making edits under anonymous IP's. That's my opinion anyway. --Hindleyite | PL | CUN | Converse 10:17, 15 May 2006 (UTC)"

- I don't have a problem with changing the howto page, like I've been saying. I just don't want it to disappear. It has a reason to exist, since Hindelyite notes he would have benefitted from the information in the article when he was a n00b; that's a powerful endorsement, considering he is an exceptional uncyclopedian. I particularly like his Handgun article. In any event, as for the marketing plan I came up with for it, in retrospect it was misguided and got out of control; it may seem naive, but I felt that since I was confining it to talk pages that I wouldn't need to ask permission to do what I was doing. That was an obvious flawed assumption, and I know better now. I'm not going to spork this over into the village dump article, because it's getting unwieldy and if it becomes necessary later, I can always quote some of this stuff over there. I don't want to step on any more toes if I can possibly avoid it at this point, which may become increasingly difficult if we're unable to resolve these issues, which is why I've been trying to make my stance clear. I'm more than willing to make any changes to the howto article that anyone suggests, as long as it's an improvement over what's already there.--Hrodulf 10:20, 1 June 2006 (UTC)
- Oh dear, it seems you are getting in a bit of a pickle with the powers that be over this. It was a good attempt at helping new users, but perhaps it might be a good idea to lay off this for a while and help out in a less obstructive manner to the admins. Never mind, I appreciate what you were doing was in good intentions and might have been helpful to some people. You have made your point, and a quite good one at that. --Hindleyite | PL | CUN | Converse 10:40, 1 June 2006 (UTC)
- I think everyone is making too big an issue out of this at the moment. It'll sort itself out. :) -- Sir Mhaille (talk to me)
- Well, I tried to be calm about it, but I never was threatened with being banned before, so that was sort of a new experience. Overall I think I managed not to put my foot in my mouth throughout the forum conversation.
Obviously I'm not going to use the links anymore, I don't think getting banned accomplishes anything. If people have problems with the howto piece I'll fix them, specifics are good, but I think the areas that need improvement are definately tone, perhaps making some content clearer? It's difficult to focus on specific areas of improvement because I don't think the criticism has been very clear regarding some aspects of the article, and it may be more than the tone that people have issues with.
I think one reason this happened was inexperience on my part. I thought since I wasn't in the main space, that what I put on user talk pages would not cause anyone to have issues. This was obviously a miscalculation. I think the best thing that can happen now is for the people who have issues with the howto article, and the "marketing" of it, to calmly, clearly describe what their issues are, so I can address them. Otherwise, it's going to be difficult for me to make the changes that people want. I'm not going to spork this to the forum either, since I think everybody should just cool off for the time being. That's my gut feeling about this at the moment (hard to be bold when your head is in the ban crosshairs. . .) --Hrodulf 12:41, 1 June 2006 (UTC)

Cheers for the pic
I said thanks on IRC but it might have zipped by so I'll say it here again. Thans for the image. GB's face looks great. The Dice Man seems to be shaping up nicely now. --Sir Hardwick Fundlebuggy (Bleat) 21:31, 24 May 2006 (UTC)

Village Dump discussion on moving Uncyclopedia:How To Get Started Editing to Uncyclopedia:How toGet Started on Editing Uncyclopedia
Thought you might find this interesting, since we were talking previously about making the howto article more prominent.

Sorry about the accidental posting an an archive page. I'll try to avoid making that error again.

- That's OK. I'm just happy whenever anyone leaves a comment, on whatever page: it gives me something to do. Thanks for letting me know about this discussion in the Village Dump. Perhaps it might be useful to reference our previous conversation on this matter? --Hindleyite | PL | CUN | Converse 13:37, 24 May 2006 (UTC)
Yes, that's why I brought it to your attention, since you'd expressed an interest in making the article more visible, and therefore more effective. --Hrodulf 13:54, 24 May 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for your comment on my story: UnNews:Stephen Hawkes butt-flavoured dog treats. did you think the story itself was ok, I wrote it. Rev. Zim_ulator (Talk) I am the dirt under your rollers 23:16, 22 May 2006 (UTC)
P.S. You get one of these for currying my flavour:
On your knees, worthy one! The Right Reverend Major Sir Zim_ulator blesses you. Your blessings are increasing exponentially. In the name of Sophia, the Church of Uncyclopedia and the Universal Church Triumphant of the Apathetic Agnostic, kneel and receive the melding of Zim's holy axe and your wetware. Now go write me a good UnNews article. Cheers! Rev. Zim_ulator (Talk) I am the dirt under your rollers 03:48, March 15, 2010 (UTC) |
- Ha ha! Cheers for the, erm, axe. I thought the original story was funny and the audio version made it sound even better. Good work on that: a thumbs up from me. --Hindleyite | PL | CUN | Converse 13:37, 23 May 2006 (UTC)

- Don't mention it. And yes, it is something of a twisted privilege when an IP attacks you. Good luck at the Emmanuel Goldstein Prize. --Hindleyite | PL | CUN | Converse 19:46, 21 May 2006 (UTC)
