Hamburg:
Known as Germany's “Gateway to the World”, Hamburg is one of the largest logistics hubs in Europe thanks to its large container port and international airport. The “Hanseatic City” is a renowned economic and academic centre with a blossoming creative scene and media landscape. The city is home to major companies such as Beiersdorf, Vattenfall and Metro Group as well as numerous start-ups including online business network Xing and games developers. Hamburg also has an extensive cultural offering with some 45 theatres, 60 museums and 150 music clubs attracting theatre, musical and music fans to the city. A new landmark is the Elbphilharmonie concert hall, which opened its doors in 2017 and connects the modern HafenCity and historic Speicherstadt districts. The baroque St. Michael's Church with its 132-metre spire dominates Hamburg’s city-centre skyline. The St. Pauli entertainment district is famous, or infamous, for the Reeperbahn and attracts locals and tourists alike.
A city of rich maritime heritage, Hamburg is synonymous with the water, with canals, rivers and waterways sweeping through the northern German city. A boat or canoe trip along the Alster canals provides magnificent views of the grand villas and old gardens along the banks. Meanwhile, the banks of the Elbe offer a pleasant stroll from Blankenese to Rissen.
The city also provides green oases. The Alstertal and Walddörfer areas in the north-east of Hamburg are attractive residential locations. Nature reserves invite visitors to discover the native flora and fauna. And the coasts of the North Sea and Baltic Sea are popular holiday destinations for locals and tourists alike.
