The European Spallation Source - ESS, has achieved its major construction in Lund, Sweden and is currently continuing in parallel to commissioning its first systems. ESS is characterized by installing and commissioning the most powerful proton LINear ACcelerator (LINAC) designed for neutron production and a 5MW Target system for the production of pulsed neutrons from spallation. The accumulator of the ESSNUSB for Neutrino production / Wildner, Elena (CERN) ; Jonnerby, Jakob (Uppsala U.) ; Koutchouk, Jean-Pierre (Uppsala U.) ; Martini, Michel (CERN) ; Schönauer, Horst (CERN) ; Bouquerel, Elian (Strasbourg, IPHC) ; Dracos, Marcos (Strasbourg, IPHC) ; Vassilopoulos, Nikolaos (Strasbourg, IPHC) ; Ekelöf, Tord (Uppsala U.) ; Ruber, Roger (Uppsala U.) et al.
The European Spallation Source (ESS) is a research centre based on the world’s most powerful neutron source currently under construction in Lund, Sweden, using 2.0 GeV, 2.86 ms long proton pulses at 14 Hz for the spallation facility (5MW on target). The possibility to pulse the linac at higher frequency to deliver, in parallel with the spallation neutron production, a very intense, cost effective, high performance neutrino beam. [...]

Development and Realisation of the ESS Machine Protection Concept / Nordt, Annika (ESS, Lund) ; Andersson, Riccard (ESS, Lund) ; Apollonio, Andrea (CERN) ; Hilbes, Christian (Unlisted, CH) ; Korhonen, Timo (ESS, Lund) ; Monera Martinez, Angel (ESS, Lund) ; Schmidt, Ruediger (CERN) ; Zaera-Sanz, Manuel (ESS, Lund)
ESS is facing extremely high beam availability requirements and is largely relying on custom made, very specialised, and expensive equipment for its operation. The proton beam power with an average of 5MW per pulse will be unprecedented and its uncontrolled release can lead to serious damage of the delicate equipment, causing long shutdown periods, inducing high financial losses and, as a main point, interfering drastically with international scientific research programs relying on ESS operation. Value Engineering of an Accelerator Design During Construction / Bargalló, Enric (ESS, Lund) ; Eshraqi, Mohammad (ESS, Lund) ; Gerigk, Frank (CERN) ; Lindroos, Mats (ESS, Lund) ; Molloy, Stephen (ESS, Lund) ; Plostinar, Ciprian (ESS, Lund) ; Sunesson, Anders (ESS, Lund)
Value engineering is an important part of the process of designing and realising large-scale installations such as high power accelerators. This typically occurs during the later part of the design stage of the system, however such exercises may also be requested by funding bodies at later stages in order to manage project contingency. The European Spallation Source neutrino super-beam conceptual design report / Alekou, A. (CERN ; Uppsala U.) ; Baussan, E. (Strasbourg, IPHC) ; Bhattacharyya, A.K. (ESS, Lund) ; Blaskovic Kraljevic, N. (ESS, Lund) ; Blennow, M. (Royal Inst. Tech., Stockholm ; Stockholm U., OKC) ; Bogomilov, M. (Sofiya U.) ; Bolling, B. (ESS, Lund) ; Bouquerel, E. (Strasbourg, IPHC) ; Buchan, O. (ESS, Lund) ; Burgman, A. (Lund U.) et al.
This conceptual design report provides a detailed account of the European Spallation Source neutrino Super Beam (ESS$\nu$SB) feasibility study. This facility has been proposed after the measurements reported in 2012 of a relatively large value of the neutrino mixing angle $\theta_{13}$, which raised the possibility of observing potential CP violation in the leptonic sector with conventional neutrino beams. A Planning and Scheduling System for the ESS Accelerator Project / Lari, Luisella (ESS, Lund ; CERN) ; Bonnal, Pierre (CERN) ; Conlon, Matthew (ESS, Lund) ; Danared, Håkan (ESS, Lund) ; Gunnarsson, Lena (ESS, Lund) ; Jacobsson, Gunilla (ESS, Lund) ; Jakobsson, Mikael (ESS, Lund) ; Lindroos, Mats (ESS, Lund) ; Tanke, Eugene (ESS, Lund) ; Weisend, John (ESS, Lund)
Constructing a large, international research infrastructure is a complex task, especially when a large fraction of the equipment is delivered as in-kind contributions. A mature project management approach is essential to lead the planning and construction to deliver scientifically and technically. [...]

The Multi-Blade (MB) Boron-10-based neutron detector is the chosen technology for three instruments at the European Spallation Source (ESS): the two ESS reflectometers, ESTIA and FREIA, and the Test Beam Line. A fourth MB detector has been built, installed and commissioned for the user operation of the reflectometer Amor at PSI (Switzerland). [...]

The European Spallation Source (ESS), currently under construction in Lund, Sweden, is the world's most powerful neutron spallation source, with an average power of 5 MW at 2.0 GeV. In the ESS neutrino Super Beam Project (ESSnuSB) it is proposed to utilise this powerful accelerator as a proton driver for a neutrino beam that will be sent to a large underground Cherenkov detector in Garpenberg, mid-Sweden.
