Construction and Test of a Prototype Chamber for the Upgrade of the ATLAS Muon Spectrometer / Bittner, B (Munich, Max Planck Inst.) ; Dubbert, J (Munich, Max Planck Inst.) ; Kroha, H (Munich, Max Planck Inst.) ; Loeben, J v (Munich, Max Planck Inst.) ; Schwegler, P (Munich, Max Planck Inst.)
Monitored drift tube chambers are used as precision tracking detectors in the muon spectrometer of the ATLAS experiment at the LHC at CERN. These chambers provide a spatial resolution of 35 μm and a tracking efficiency of close to 100% up to background rates of 0.5 kHz/cm 2 , the former being limited at higher rates mainly due to space-charge effects and the latter due to the maximum drift time of 700 ns. Performance of Drift-Tube Detectors at High Counting Rates for High-Luminosity LHC Upgrades / Bittner, Bernhard (Munich, Max Planck Inst.) ; Dubbert, Joerg ; Kortner, Oliver ; Kroha, Hubert ; Manfredini, Alessandro ; Nowak, Sebastian ; Ott, Sebastian ; Richter, Robert ; Schwegler, Philipp ; Zanzi, Daniele et al.
The performance of pressurized drift-tube detectors at very high background rates has been studied at the Gamma Irradiation Facility (GIF) at CERN and in an intense 20 MeV proton beam at the Munich Van- der-Graaf tandem accelerator for applications in large-area precision muon tracking at high-luminosity upgrades of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The ATLAS muon drift-tube (MDT) chambers with 30 mm tube diameter have been designed to cope with γ and neutron background hit rates of up to 500 Hz/cm 2 [...]

Pressurized drift-tube chambers are e?cient detectors for high-precision tracking over large areas. The Monitored Drift-Tube (MDT) chambers of the muon spectrometer of the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) reach a spatial resolution of 35 micons and almost 100% tracking e?ciency with 6 layers of 30 mm diameter drift tubes operated with Ar:CO2 (93:7) gas mixture at 3 bar and a gas gain of 20000. The muon detectors of the experiments at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) have to cope with unprecedentedly high neutron and gamma ray background rates. In the forward regions of the muon spectrometer of the ATLAS detector, for instance, counting rates of 1.7 kHz/square cm are reached at the LHC design luminosity. [...]

The goals of the ongoing and planned ATLAS muon detector upgrades are to increase the acceptance for precision muon momentum measurement and triggering and to improve the rate capability of the muon chambers in the high-background regions corresponding to the increasing LHC luminosity. [...]

Construction and test of high precision drift-tube (sMDT) chambers for the ATLAS muon spectrometer / Nowak, Sebastian (Munich, Max Planck Inst.) ; Kortner, Oliver (Munich, Max Planck Inst.) ; Kroha, Hubert (Munich, Max Planck Inst.) ; Schwegler, Philipp (Munich, Max Planck Inst.) ; Sforza, Federico (Munich, Max Planck Inst.)
For the upgrade of the ATLAS muon spectrometer in March 2014 new muon tracking chambers (sMDT) with drift-tubes of 15 mm diameter, half of the value of the standard ATLAS Monitored Drift-Tubes (MDT) chambers, and 10~$\mu$m positioning accuracy of the sense wires have been constructed. The new chambers are designed to be fully compatible with the present ATLAS services but, with respect to the previously installed ATLAS MDT chambers, they are assembled in a more compact geometry and they deploy two additional tube layers that provide redundant rack information. High Rate Proton Irradiation of 15mm Muon Drifttubes / Zibell, Andre (Munich U.) ; Biebel, Otmar (Munich U.) ; Hertenberger, Ralf (Munich U.) ; Ruschke, Alexander (Munich U.) ; Schmitt, Christopher (Munich U.) ; Kroha, Hubert (Munich, Max Planck Inst.) ; Bittner, Bernhard (Munich, Max Planck Inst.) ; Schwegler, Philipp (Munich, Max Planck Inst.) ; Dubbert, Jorg (Munich, Max Planck Inst.) ; Ott, Sebastian (Munich, Max Planck Inst.)
Future LHC luminosity upgrades will significantly increase the amount of background hits from photons, neutrons and protons in the detectors of the ATLAS muon spectrometer. At the proposed LHC peak luminosity of 5*10^34 1/cm^2s, background hit rates of more than 10 kHz/cm^2 are expected in the innermost forward region, leading to a loss of performance of the current tracking chambers.
