The upgrades of the Compact Muon Solenoid particle physics experiment at CERN's Large Hadron Collider provide a major challenge for the real-time collision data selection. This paper presents a novel approach to pattern recognition and charged particle trajectory reconstruction using an all-FPGA solution. [...]

FPGA-based tracking for the CMS Level-1 trigger using the tracklet algorithm / Bartz, Edward Hugo (Rutgers U., Piscataway) ; Gershtein, Yury (Rutgers U., Piscataway) ; Halkiadakis, Eva (Rutgers U., Piscataway) ; Kyriacou, Savvas (Johns Hopkins U.) ; Stone, Robert (Rutgers U., Piscataway) ; Boudoul, Gaelle (Lyon, IPN) ; Viret, Sebastien (Lyon, IPN) ; Bucci, Rachael Elizabeth (Notre Dame U.) ; Hildreth, Michael (Notre Dame U.) ; Lannon, Kevin Patrick (Notre Dame U.) et al.
The high instantaneous luminosities expected following the upgrade of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) to the High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) pose major experimental challenges for the CMS experiment. A central component to allow efficient operation under these conditions is the reconstruction of charged particle trajectories and their inclusion in the hardware-based trigger system. [...]

Level-1 Track Finding with an all-FPGA system at CMS for the HL-LHC / Tao, Zhengcheng (Cornell U.)
With the High Luminosity LHC upgrades, incorporating tracking information into the CMS Level-1 trigger becomes necessary in order to maintain a manageable trigger rate and good trigger performance e.g. to retain thresholds for electroweak physics. [...]

FPGA-Based Approach to Level-1 Track Finding at CMS for the HL-LHC / Bartz, Edward Hugo (Rutgers U., Piscataway) ; Chaves, Jorge Enrique (Cornell U.) ; Gershtein, Yury (Rutgers U., Piscataway) ; Halkiadakis, Eva (Rutgers U., Piscataway) ; Hildreth, Michael (Notre Dame U.) ; Kyriacou, Savvas (Rutgers U., Piscataway) ; Lannon, Kevin Patrick (Notre Dame U.) ; Lefeld, Anthony James (Ohio State U.) ; Ryd, Anders Per Erik (Cornell U.) ; Skinnari, Louise (Cornell U.) et al.
During the High Luminosity LHC, to maintain a manageable trigger rate and achieve its physics goals, the CMS detector will need charged particle tracking at the hardware trigger level. The tracklet approach is a track-finding algorithm based on a road-search algorithm that has been implemented on commercially available FPGA technology. [...]

Level-1 track finding with an all-FPGA system at CMS for the HL-LHC / James, Thomas Owen (CERN) /CMS Collaboration
The Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is designed to study a wide range of high energy physics phenomena. It employs a large all-silicon tracker within a 3.8\,T magnetic solenoid, which allows precise measurements of transverse momentum ($p_\mathrm{T}$) and vertex position. [...]

Measurement of jet fragmentation into charged particles in pp and PbPb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$= 2.76 TeV / CMS Collaboration
Jet fragmentation in pp and PbPb collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 2.76 TeV per nucleon pair was studied using data collected with the CMS detector at the LHC. Fragmentation functions are constructed using charged-particle tracks with transverse momenta pt > 4 GeV for dijet events with a leading jet of pt > 100 GeV. [...]

Performance of the CMS Level-1 trigger in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} = $ 13 TeV / CMS Collaboration
At the start of Run 2 in 2015, the LHC delivered proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. During Run 2 (years 2015-2018) the LHC eventually reached a luminosity of 2.1 $\times $ 10$^{34} $ cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$, almost three times that reached during Run 1 (2009-2013) and a factor of two larger than the LHC design value, leading to events with up to a mean of about 50 simultaneous inelastic proton-proton collisions per bunch crossing (pileup).
