Performance of the Totem Detectors at the LHC / TOTEM Collaboration
The TOTEM Experiment is designed to measure the total proton-proton cross-section with the luminosity-independent method and to study elastic and diffractive pp scattering at the LHC. To achieve optimum forward coverage for charged particles emitted by the pp collisions in the interaction point IP5, two tracking telescopes, T1 and T2, are installed on each side of the IP in the pseudorapidity region 3.1 $\le |\eta| \le $6.5, and special movable beam-pipe insertions – called Roman Pots (RP) – are placed at distances of ±147m and ±220m from IP5. Construction and Performance of Large-Area Triple-GEM Prototypes for Future Upgrades of the CMS Forward Muon System / Tytgat, M. (Gent U.) ; Marinov, A. (Gent U.) ; Zaganidis, N. (Gent U.) ; Ban, Y. (Peking U., Beijing) ; Cai, J. (Peking U., Beijing) ; Teng, H. (Peking U., Beijing) ; Mohapatra, A. (Bhubaneswar, NISER) ; Moulik, T. (Bhubaneswar, NISER) ; Abbrescia, M. (Bari Polytechnic ; Bari U. ; INFN, Bari) ; Colaleo, A. (Bari Polytechnic ; Bari U. ; INFN, Bari) et al.
At present, part of the forward RPC muon system of the CMS detector at the CERN LHC remains uninstrumented in the high-\eta region. An international collaboration is investigating the possibility of covering the 1.6 < |\eta| < 2.4 region of the muon endcaps with large-area triple-GEM detectors. [...]

Test beam results of the GE1/1 prototype for a future upgrade of the CMS high-$\eta$ muon system / Abbaneo, D. (CERN) ; Abbrescia, M. (Bari U. ; INFN, Bari) ; Armagnaud, C. (CERN) ; Aspell, P. (CERN) ; Bagliesi, M.G. (INFN, Pisa) ; Ban, Y. (Peking U., Beijing) ; Bally, S. (CERN) ; Benussi, L. (Frascati) ; Berzano, U. (CERN) ; Bianco, S. (Frascati) et al.
Gas Electron Multipliers (GEM) are an interesting technology under consideration for the future upgrade of the forward region of the CMS muon system, specifically in the $1.6<| \eta |<2.4$ endcap region. With a sufficiently fine segmentation GEMs can provide precision tracking as well as fast trigger information. [...]

Construction of the first full-size GEM-based prototype for the CMS high-$\eta$ muon system / Abbaneo, D. (CERN) ; Bally, S. (CERN) ; Postema, H. (CERN) ; Conde Garcia, A. (CERN) ; Chatelain, J.P. (CERN) ; Faber, G. (CERN) ; Ropelewski, L. (CERN) ; Duarte Pinto, S. (CERN) ; Croci, G. (CERN) ; Alfonsi, M. (CERN) et al.
In view of a possible extension of the forward CMS muon detector system and future LHC luminosity upgrades, Micro-Pattern Gas Detectors (MPGDs) are an appealing technology. They can simultaneously provide precision tracking and fast trigger information, as well as sufficiently fine segmentation to cope with high particle rates in the high-eta region at LHC and its future upgrades. Diffraction at TOTEM / Giani, S (CERN) ; Niewiadomski, H (CERN ; Penn State U.) ; Antchev, G (CERN) ; Aspell, P (CERN) ; Avati, V (CERN ; Penn State U.) ; Bagliesi, M G (INFN, Pisa ; Siena U.) ; Berardi, V (INFN, Bari ; Bari Polytechnic) ; Berretti, M (INFN, Pisa ; Siena U.) ; Besta, M (CERN) ; Bozzo, M (Genoa U. ; INFN, Genoa) et al.
The primary objective of the TOTEM experiment at the LHC is the measurement of the total proton-proton cross section with the luminosity-independent method and the study of elastic proton-proton cross-section over a wide |t|-range. In addition TOTEM also performs a comprehensive study of diffraction, spanning from cross-section measurements of individual diffractive processes to the analysis of their event topologies. [...]

Track Reconstruction with Cosmic Ray Data at the Tracker Integration Facility / CMS Collaboration
The subsystems of the CMS silicon strip tracker were integrated and commissioned at the Tracker Integration Facility (TIF) in the period from November 2006 to July 2007. As part of the commissioning, large samples of cosmic ray data were recorded under various running conditions in the absence of a magnetic field. [...]

The TOTEM T2 telescope based on triple-GEM chambers / Bagliesi, M G (Siena U. ; INFN, Pisa) ; Berretti, M (Siena U. ; INFN, Pisa) ; Brucken, E (Helsinki U.) ; Cecchi, R (Siena U. ; INFN, Pisa) ; David, E (CERN) ; Garcia, F (Helsinki U.) ; Greco, V (Siena U. ; INFN, Pisa) ; Heino, J (Helsinki U.) ; Hilden, T (Helsinki U.) ; Kurvinen, K (Helsinki U.) et al.
The TOTEM experiment at LHC has chosen the triple Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) technology for its T2 telescope which will provide charged track reconstruction in the pseudorapidity range 5.3<|η|<6.5 and a fully inclusive trigger for inelastic events. GEMs are gas filled detectors which combine good spatial resolution with very high rate capability and a good resistance to radiation. [...]

Alignment of the CMS Silicon Strip Tracker during stand-alone Commissioning / CMS Collaboration
The results of the CMS tracker alignment analysis are presented using the data from cosmic tracks, optical survey information, and the laser alignment system at the Tracker Integration Facility at CERN. During several months of operation in the spring and summer of 2007, about five million cosmic track events were collected with a partially active CMS Tracker. [...]
