Performance of the collimation system during the 2018 lead ion run at the Large Hadron Collider
/ Fuster-Martínez, Nuria (CERN) ; Bruce, Roderik (CERN) ; Jowett, John (CERN) ; Mereghetti, Alessio (CERN) ; Mirarchi, Daniele (CERN) ; Redaelli, Stefano (CERN)
As part of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) heavy-ion research programme, the last month of the 2018 LHC run was dedicated to Pb ion physics. Several heavy-ion runs have been performed since the start-up of the LHC. [...]

The LHC heavy-ion program aims to further increase the stored ion beam energy, putting high demands on the LHC collimation system. Accurate simulations of the ion collimation efficiency are crucial to validate the feasibility of new proposed configurations and beam parameters. [...]

Simulation of Heavy-Ion Beam Losses with Crystal Collimation*
/ Cai, Rongrong (CERN) ; Bruce, Roderik (CERN) ; D'Andrea, Marco (CERN) ; Esposito, Luigi Salvatore (CERN) ; Hermes, Pascal (CERN) ; Lechner, Anton (CERN) ; Mirarchi, Daniele (CERN) ; Potoine, Jean-Baptiste (CERN ; IES, Montpellier) ; Redaelli, Stefano (CERN) ; Salvat Pujol, Francesc (CERN) et al.
With the higher stored energy envisioned for future heavy-ion runs in the LHC and the challenging fragmentation aspect of heavy-ion beams due to interaction with collimator material, the need arises for even more performing collimation systems. One promising solution is crystal channeling, which is used in the HL-LHC baseline and starts with Run III for heavy-ion collimation. [...]

Collimation of heavy-ion beams in the HE-LHC
/ Abramov, Andrey (JAI, UK ; CERN ; Royal Holloway, U. of London) ; Bruce, Roderik (CERN) ; Crouch, Matthew (CERN) ; Fuster-Martínez, Nuria (CERN) ; Mereghetti, Alessio (CERN) ; Molson, James (CERN) ; Nevay, Laurence (JAI, UK ; Royal Holloway, U. of London ; CERN) ; Redaelli, Stefano (CERN)
A design study for a future collider to be built in the LHC tunnel, the High-Energy Large Hadron Collider (HE-LHC), has been launched as part of the Future Circular Collider (FCC) study at CERN. It would provide proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 27 TeV as well as collisions of heavy ions at the equivalent magnetic rigidity. [...]

The 2018 heavy-ion run of the LHC
/ Jowett, John (CERN) ; Bahamonde Castro, Cristina (CERN) ; Bartmann, Wolfgang (CERN) ; Bracco, Chiara (CERN) ; Bruce, Roderik (CERN) ; Coello, Jaime (CERN) ; Dilly, Joschua (CERN) ; Fartoukh, Stephane (CERN) ; Fol, Elena (CERN) ; Fuster-Martínez, Nuria (CERN) et al.
The fourth one-month Pb-Pb collision run brought LHC Run 2 to an end in December 2018. Following the tendency to reduce dependence on the configuration of the preceding proton run, a completely new optics cycle with the strongest ever focussing at the ALICE and LHCb experiments was designed and rapidly implemented, demonstrating the maturity of the collider’s operating modes. Mitigation of losses at injection protection devices in the CERN LHC
/ Tomás, R (CERN) ; Calia, A (CERN) ; D'Andrea, M (CERN) ; Deniau, L (CERN) ; Jacquet, D (CERN) ; Kostoglou, S (CERN) ; Maclean, E H (CERN) ; Mirarchi, D (CERN) ; Paraschou, K (CERN) ; Persson, T (CERN) et al.
During loss maps performed with beam at injection energy in the LHC with the high octupole and chromaticity settings used for multi-train operation, large beam losses were observed at an injection protection device (TDIS). Although these losses did not present a threat to machine operation or protection, reducing them is of high importance to improve machine performance. [...]

Simulations of heavy-ion halo collimation at the CERN Large Hadron Collider: benchmark with measurements and cleaning performance evaluation
/ Fuster-Martínez, N. (CERN) ; Bruce, R. (CERN) ; Cerutti, F. (CERN) ; De Maria, R. (CERN) ; Hermes, P. (CERN) ; Lechner, A. (CERN) ; Mereghetti, A. (CERN) ; Molson, J. (CERN) ; Redaelli, S. (CERN) ; Skordis, E. (CERN) et al.
Protons and heavy-ion beams at unprecedented energies are brought into collisions in the CERN Large Hadron Collider for high-energy experiments. The LHC multi-stage collimation system is designed to provide protection against regular and abnormal losses in order to reduce the risk of quenches of the superconducting magnets as well as keeping background in the experiments under control.
