Collimation of 400 MJ Beams at the LHC: The First Step Towards the HL-LHC Era / Redaelli, Stefano (CERN) ; Abramov, Andrey (CERN) ; Baillard, Dylan (CERN) ; Bruce, Roderik (CERN) ; Cai, Rongrong (CERN ; Ecole Polytechnique, Lausanne) ; Carra, Federico (CERN) ; D'Andrea, Marco (CERN) ; Di Castro, Mario (CERN) ; Giacomel, Lorenzo (CERN) ; Hermes, Pascal (CERN) et al.
An important upgrade programme is planned for the collimation system of the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in order to meet the challenges of the upcoming High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) project. A first stage of the HL-LHC upgrade was already deployed during the last LHC Long Shutdown, offering important improvements of the collimation cleaning, a significant reduction of the impedance contribution and better cleaning of collisional debris, in particular for ion-ion collisions. Overview of material choices for HL-LHC collimators / Accettura, C (CERN) ; Biancacci, N (CERN) ; Bruce, R (CERN) ; Carra, F (CERN) ; Mounet, N (CERN) ; Kurtulus, A (CERN ; Zurich, ETH) ; Nuiry, F -X (CERN) ; Perillo Marcone, A (CERN) ; Redaelli, S (CERN)
In view of the High-Luminosity (HL-LHC) upgrade of the LHC collimation system, different materials were investigated to determine how the jaws of the new collimators could be manufactured to meet the demanding requirements of HL-LHC, such as thermomechanical robustness and stability, RF impedance, UHV, etc. During the Long-Shutdown 2 (LS2), five primary and 10 secondary low-impedance collimators were already produced using novel material. Flexible graphite (FG) with 1 - 1.2 g/cm$^3$ density is employed as beam energy absorber material in the CERN's Large Hadron Collider (LHC) beam dumping system. However, the increase of energy deposited expected for new HL-LHC (High-Luminosity LHC) design demanded for an improvement in reliability and safety of beam dumping devices, and the need for a calibrated material model suitable for high-level FE simulations has been prioritized. Irradiation of Low-Z Carbon-Based Materials with 440 GeV/c Proton Beam for High Energy & Intensity Beam Absorbers: The CERN HiRadMat-56-HED Experiment / Andreu Muñoz, Pablo (CERN) ; Calviani, Marco (CERN) ; Charitonidis, Nikolaos (CERN) ; Cherif, Ahmed (CERN) ; Farina, Edoardo (CERN) ; Krainer, Alexander (CERN) ; Lechner, Anton (CERN) ; Maestre, Jorge (CERN) ; Nuiry, Francois-Xavier (CERN) ; Seidenbinder, Regis (CERN) et al.
The beam stored energy and the peak intensity of CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) will grow in the next few years. The former will increase from the 320 MJ values of Run2 (2015-2018) to almost 540 MJ during Run3 (2022 onwards) and 680 MJ during the HL-LHC era putting stringent requirements on beam intercepting devices, such as absorbers and dumps.
