Frozen Generalized Symmetries / Cvetič, Mirjam (Pennsylvania U., Dept. Math. ; Pennsylvania U. ; Maribor U.) ; Dierigl, Markus (Munich U., ASC ; CERN) ; Lin, Ling (Bologna U. ; INFN, Bologna) ; Torres, Ethan (CERN) ; Zhang, Hao Y. (Tokyo U., IPMU)
M-theory frozen singularities are (locally) $D$- or $E$-type orbifold singularities with a background fractional $C_3$-monodromy surrounding them. In this paper, we revisit such backgrounds and address several puzzling features of their physics. [...]

Cornering Relative Symmetry Theories / Cvetič, Mirjam (Pennsylvania U., Dept. Math. ; Pennsylvania U. ; Maribor U.) ; Donagi, Ron (Pennsylvania U., Dept. Math. ; Pennsylvania U.) ; Heckman, Jonathan J. (Pennsylvania U., Dept. Math. ; Pennsylvania U.) ; Hübner, Max (Pennsylvania U., Dept. Math.) ; Torres, Ethan (CERN)
The symmetry data of a $d$-dimensional quantum field theory (QFT) can often be captured in terms of a higher-dimensional symmetry topological field theory (SymTFT). In top down (i.e., stringy) realizations of this structure, the QFT in question is localized in a higher-dimensional bulk. [...]

Mode Stability For Massless Scalars In Five-Dimensional Black Hole Backgrounds / Cvetic, M. (Pennsylvania U. ; Pennsylvania U., Dept. Math. ; Maribor U. ; CERN) ; Pope, C.N. (Texas A-M ; Cambridge U., DAMTP) ; Whiting, B.F. (Florida U.) ; Zhang, Haoyu (Texas A-M)
The mode stability of the Kerr black hole in four dimensions was demonstrated by Whiting in 1989, by separating the Teukolsky equation that describes gravitational perturbations and then transforming the radial and angular equations in such a way that the problem can be reformulated as a wave equation in an auxiliary spacetime in which the proof of stability is greatly simplified, owing to the absence of an ergoregion. As a preliminary step towards extending these ideas to higher-dimensional black holes, we study the mode stability of the massless scalar wave equation in the five-dimensional black hole solutions of Einstein gravity and supergravity. Long-range forces between nonidentical black holes with non-BPS extremal limits / Cremonini, S. (Lehigh U.) ; Cvetic, M. (Pennsylvania U. ; Maribor U. ; CERN) ; Pope, C.N. (Texas A-M ; Cambridge U., DAMTP) ; Saha, A. (Texas A-M)
Motivated by recent studies of long-range forces beween identical black holes, we extend these considerations by investigating the forces between two non-identical black holes. We focus on classes of theories where charged black holes can have extremal limits that are not BPS. [...]

Brill-Noether-general Limit Root Bundles: Absence of vector-like Exotics in F-theory Standard Models / Bies, Martin (Pennsylvania U.) ; Cvetič, Mirjam (Pennsylvania U. ; Maribor U. ; CERN) ; Donagi, Ron (Pennsylvania U.) ; Ong, Marielle (Pennsylvania U.)
Root bundles appear prominently in studies of vector-like spectra of 4d F-theory compactifications. Of particular importance to phenomenology are the Quadrillion F-theory Standard Models (F-theory QSMs). [...]

0-form, 1-form, and 2-group symmetries via cutting and gluing of orbifolds / Cvetič, Mirjam (Pennsylvania U. ; Maribor U. ; CERN ; Pennsylvania U., Dept. Math.) ; Heckman, Jonathan J. (Pennsylvania U. ; Pennsylvania U., Dept. Math.) ; Hübner, Max (Pennsylvania U.) ; Torres, Ethan (Pennsylvania U.)
Orbifold singularities of M-theory constitute the building blocks of a broad class of supersymmetric quantum field theories (SQFTs). In this paper we show how the local data of these geometries determines global data on the resulting higher symmetries of these systems. [...]

We review recent developments and outstanding questions regarding connecting the top-down UV complete physical framework of string theory with the observed physics of the Standard Model and beyond the Standard Model physics, emphasizing the global nonperturbative framework of F-theory and general lessons from UV physics. One Loop to Rule Them All: Eight and Nine Dimensional String Vacua from Junctions / Cvetič, Mirjam (Pennsylvania U. ; Maribor U. ; CERN) ; Dierigl, Markus (Munich U., ASC) ; Lin, Ling (CERN) ; Zhang, Hao Y. (Pennsylvania U.)
String and 5-brane junctions are shown to succinctly classify all known 8d ${\cal N}$=1 string vacua. This requires an extension of the description for ordinary $[p,q]$-7-branes to consistently include O7$^+$-planes, which then naturally encodes the dynamics of $\mathfrak{sp}_n$ gauge algebras, including their higher-form center symmetries. Flavor Symmetries and Automatic Enhancement in the 6d Supergravity Swampland / Cvetic, Mirjam (Pennsylvania U. ; Maribor U. ; CERN) ; Lin, Ling (CERN) ; Turner, Andrew P. (Pennsylvania U.)
We argue for the quantum-gravitational inconsistency of certain 6d $\mathcal{N}=(1,0)$ supergravity theories, whose anomaly-free gauge algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ and hypermultiplet spectrum $M$ were observed in arxiv:2012.01437 to be realizable only as part of a larger gauge sector $(\mathfrak{g}' \supset \mathfrak{g}, M' \supset M)$ in F-theory. To detach any reference to a string theoretic method of construction, we utilize flavor symmetries to provide compelling reasons why the vast majority of such $(\mathfrak{g},M)$ theories are not compatible with quantum gravity constraints, and how the "automatic enhancement" to $(\mathfrak{g}', M')$ remedies this. [...]

Gauge group topology of 8D Chaudhuri-Hockney-Lykken vacua / Cvetic, Mirjam (Pennsylvania U. ; Maribor U.) ; Dierigl, Markus (Munich U., ASC) ; Lin, Ling (CERN) ; Zhang, Hao Y. (Pennsylvania U.)
Compactifications of the CHL string to eight dimensions can be characterized by embeddings of root lattices into the rank 12 momentum lattice $\Lambda_M$, the so-called Mikhailov lattice. Based on this data, we devise a method to determine the global gauge group structure including all $U(1)$ factors. [...]
