Adding occupation (P106)artist (Q483501) statements

[edit]

Hi @AniaGrzybowska, recently you have added many thousands of occupation (P106)artist (Q483501) statements to Wikidata items for artists, with a reference to a data aggregation startup. This is one example of such an edit but I found thousands of them in your recent edit history.

In most cases these statements are superfluous, as more precise occupation (P106) statements are already present.

In addition, please note that it's controversial and unwanted to seed Wikidata with URLs/references pointing to a non-notable website that aggregates other data. I have a strong impression you are affiliated with this project and that there's an element of self-promotion in here. Identifiers and references to reliable and notable sources are extremely welcome, but the references you have been inserting can be considered as spam.

We can use a lot of help in quality improvements to Wikidata items of visual artists, e.g. by adding reliably sourced data about the places where they studied, their teachers, their works. You are very welcome to contribute to that. Spinster 💬 16:06, 12 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, so sorry if it was perceived like that! It definitely wasn't my intention. I mosty wanted to add things like Tate IDs with the Tate website and MoMA one in the red. Some of the artists had very specific occupations and I thought that a general one that's just 'artist' would be good for filtering all artists on Wikidata. Lots of the entries were reference-less as well. Same with other types of people where I added Twitter and Instagram data from the sites + occupation as well. I'll make sure to only update properties where there isn't anything at all moving forward. Would you say places of education and works are a good place to start? I think Tate and MOMA have lots of data I can use. AniaGrzybowska (talk) 17:18, 12 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @AniaGrzybowska thank you for replying so fast. It's actually very doable to filter/query for general occupations if more specific ones have been provided. It's indeed more useful to add statements where there are none yet, add reliable references... Information about artists' education is indeed often still lacking on Wikidata, and their social media handles are often valuable to add as well. With contemporary artists it's also useful to add their official website (P856), for instance. Spinster 💬 18:10, 12 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That's helpful advice! I didn't know about the general vs specific occupation (assumed that if there's a general one, it's easier to filter by that). I'll start looking at universities/works when I'm doing Tate and MoMA ids. Will be more helpful that way. AniaGrzybowska (talk) 19:07, 12 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
