HOW TO RIGHT A GOOD ESSAY

This topic perhaps disturbs lakhs of aspirants each year. However, if you
understand the basics of decoding the essay then essay will not be a
nightmare.

Essay is such a portion which can either ruin your result or it can elevate
your result and put you in good rank. Each year candidates score anywhere
between 70 to 150. The range can even be more. So, as you see, it is
mandatory to score good marks in essay to get good rank. Bad score – no
result or good score – top ranks. So, you must not ignore essay atleast.

Importance of essay can be understood like this

- You give too much time for reading polity/economy etc (GS1,2,3) but
there is no surety of 100 marks
- But if you give right time for essay, it can give you score nearby 150
and even more. So, with lesser effort if you are getting more marks,
you should not and must not ignore it. Even your essay have its own
feelings if we believe in karma – it might be saying to you when you
are ignoring it – IGNORE ME ONCE AND I WILL SHOW YOU WHO
IS THE MASTER OF THE UPSC GAME. So, love the essay, nurture
the essay and enjoy the result.
- Most of the candidates do ignore the essay part and wait for the last
time. Some even write only 1-2 essays and go direct to examination
hall. Don’t do this blunder. Though there can be exceptions. If you are
an exception, JAHANPANAH TUSSI GREAT HO, TOFA KUBUL
KARO.

I have always followed this model to decode any essay you say and have
always got good marks.

The idea is

1. READ THE TOPIC AND CHOOSE WHICH TOPIC YOU ARE CONFORTABLE
AT.
2. DON’T START WRITING AS SOON AS YOU GET THE PAPER. You have
90 minutes for an essay. Utilize next 20-25 minutes for making the
structure in rough section and write for next 1 hour. That is enough.
3. START WITH A POSITIVE/CONSTRUCTIVE NOTE – YOUR FIRST
PARAGRAPH SHOULD BE OPTIMISTIC – Generally it shows your
personality too. You can use a story but don’t write 2 page story, it
bores your examiner and kills your time.
4. In next few paragraphs, Discuss the various dimensions that you can
think of. Think of dimensions – historically, politically, economically,
socially, psychologically, culturally, digital space and even
environmentally etc. You can add more dimensions if your mind can
apprehend.
You can also choose to discuss effects as of Personal- Familial-
Community – Nation- International-and ultimately whole existing life
So, you see, there can be more dimensions that you can put to use.
This portion should be full of relevant examples if possible and also
you should be explaining the topic positively.
5. Then write the problems associated with it. Remember to use the
same sequence that you used for positivity. But, definitely there are
lacunae. This part of essay I say as CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM
6. But then there are problem – then you must discuss the solution –
what is your idea of solving these issues –without it, there is no
meaning of showing the darker side.
7. In the end, just give a gist and end with a positive note. ENDING
SHOULD NOT BE NEGATIVE. BE POSTIVE. IT CAN BE FUTURISTIC
TOO.
8. In all along, try to give relevant examples only. Keep looking at the
topic that you are attempting, many times we deviate from the core
theme in the midway. That should never happen. I always used to
keep the topic in front while structuring in 20-25 minutes. This helps
you to avoid any deviation from the path.
9. If you can use current events in the essay, use them – any scheme,
event, threat, political visit –any but it must be relevant
10. Also, if you remember good quotes, use them but don’t make
your essay quote oriented.
11. And yes, do write the essay. Keep practicing. I HAVE SEEN
MANY WHO SPEAK BUT NEVER DO BUT UPSC IS LOOKING FOR
THOSE WHO DO, THEY MAY SPEAK LATER AFTER SELECTION–
Remember, the greatest mistake you can make in life is to
continuously fear you will make one.
Afterall, if you are not writing and only thinking, then chances are that
essay will ignore you.
It is easier to win than to fail as failure will make you appear in
UPSC exam next year with loads of anxiety in between.
Instead, winning will land you in LBSNAA. So, it is better, keep
practicing and win the match.

This strategy has always helped me to score good marks in essay.

Essay demands just one thing – occasional practicing and critical
thinking. But it hates being ignored. So, don’t ignore it.
In next few days, I will be decoding the various essays that were
asked in UPSC on the same principle that I just explained. Then, you
will come to know that essay is a baby which needs nourishment only
through constant practice.

Rest, have faith that you can also write good essay as
“TO THOSE WHO HAS FAITH, NO EXPLANATION IS NECESSARY.
TO ONE WITHOUT FAITH, NO EXPLANATION IS POSSIBLE” Your
subconscious mind produce the same result that you think of yourself.
So, love yourself, love your personality and love your essay. Keep
essaying.

Please spread the words so that it may help more people.

Good Luck.
