Submit them at [email protected] before our next class begins.
A. What is main contribution of Gene therapy in the civilizations of humanity?
The main contribution of gene therapy in the civilizations of humanity include curing a particular
disease or disorder that may be considered incurable, which is of big help to the civilizations of
humanity since we were finally able to discover a way in order to avoid the deaths of people that have
these diseases. It prolongs the lives of the people who have been dying and suffering from the symptoms
and traits that a disease or a disorder has. Another contribution that gene therapy is that it also improves
the ability of our body to fight diseases through the use of genetic engineering, as it restores the function
of a certain protein by introducing a normal copy of the gene to our body. It basically helps us “replace”
a gene that is either faulty or missing. To conclude, gene therapy is a method that treats wide range of
diseases, and helps us treat diseases by manipulating vectors to deliver genes through the use of
bioengineering.
B. Given the advantages and disadvantages of Gene Therapy, would you like to avail of it when one
of your family member is sick and gene therapy is the possible treatment?
C. List down the moral and bioethical issues surrounding the Gene therapy. (List down at least 10
issues).
1. How the good or the bad uses of gene therapy be distinguished.
2. Whose decision it would be to decide which traits are normal and which constitute a disability or
disorder.
3. If the high costs of gene therapy will make it available only to the wealthy.
4. If the widespread use of gene therapy would make society less accepting of people who are different.
5. If people would be allowed to use gene therapy to enhance basic human traits such as height,
intelligence, or athletic ability.
6. Scarcity of studies evaluating the impacts of the use of gene therapy on human health.
7. The dangers of using viruses as transport vectors.
8. Safer non-viral vectors that are currently available are either inefficient or have a very limited
application.
9. Preventing unwanted expression of the heterologous gene or vector, since this may trigger
immunological responses in individuals under treatment.
10. Amplifying and expressing the heterologous gene naturally as seen with resident genes, so that the
patient can undertake a single treatment
