PRESENTATION
OF GROUP 5
BIOTECHNOLOGY
INTRODUCTION

Biotechnology is technology that utilizes

biological systems, living organisms or parts of
this to develop or create different products.
Brewing and baking bread are examples of
processes that fall within the concept of
biotechnology
Medical biotechnology

is a branch of medicine that uses living

cells and cell materials to research, and
then produce pharmaceutical and
diagnosing products.
What is a Stem cell THERAPY ?

.
Stem-cell therapy is the use of stem cells
to treat or prevent a disease or condition.
BONE MARROW TRANSPLANT

Doctors have performed stem cell

transplants, also known as bone marrow
transplants.
STEM CELL ON HEART

According to a new research, stem cell

therapy was used on heart disease
patients. It was found that it can make
their coronary arteries narrower
What are the Advantages of Stem Cell therapy ?

 It provides medical benefits in the fields of

therapeutic cloning and regenerative medicine.
 It provides great potential for discovering
treatments and cures to a variety of diseases
 Scientists and doctors will be able to test millions
of potential drugs and medicine, without the
use of animals or human testers.
What are the disadvantages of stem cell therapy?

 The use of embryonic stem cells for

research involves the destruction of
blastocysts formed from laboratory-fertilized
human eggs.
 A disadvantage of most adult stem cells is
that they are pre-specialized
FUTURE RESEARCHES ON STEM CELL

Researchers haven't been able to successfully

perform therapeutic cloning with humans
despite success in a number of other species.
WHAT IS A Gene Therapy?

Gene therapy is an experimental form of

treatment that uses gene transfer of genetic
material into the cell of a patient to cure
the disease.
GENE THERAPY

The first human to receive

gene therapy treatment was a
4 year old girl with severe
immune-deficiency disease.
What are the advantages of gene therapy?

 1. It offers the possibility of a

positive medical outcome.

 2. We can treat disease or illness

in meaningful ways.

 3. Gene therapy could be useful

in the treatment of multiple
diseases.

 4. The medical impact of gene

therapy can create permanent
results.
What are the disadvantages of gene
therapy?

Unwanted immune system

reaction.
Targeting the wrong cells.
Infection caused by the
virus.
Possibility of causing a
tumor.
FUTURE ADVANCEMENTS OF GENE THERAPY

While the potential for these

early gene therapy successes
,next-generation technologies are
dramatically expanding
Genitically Modified Organisms (GMO)

A GMO, or genetically modified organism, is

a plant, animal, microorganism or other
organism whose genetic makeup has been
modified in a laboratory
GMO APPLICATIONS

Most of the GMO crops grown today were

developed to help farmers prevent crop loss.
The three most common traits found in
GMO crops are:

 Resistance to insect damage

 Tolerance to herbicides
 Resistance to plant viruses
WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF GMO?

They allow for more profit.

They add more value to crops.
They are known to decrease the
prices of food.
They yield products that are
found to be safe.
WHAT ARE THE DISADVANTAGES OF GMO?

 They threaten crop diversity.

 They would make plants that
leave unwanted residual effects to
remain in the soil for a long
period of time.
 They can pose a threat to the
insects that are important to the
ecosystem.
