David Oliver has tried his hand at
several creative careers. He was
a photographers assistant at the
age of 19 in New York, then ew
across the world to study sculp-

Sydney, before settling in London
and founding the Paper & Paint
Library in 1996. He has been its
creative director ever since. Now
also working as a photographer,
he was assigned the task of cap-
turing an open-sided, bamboo-clad house in Mustique. Designed by
Veere Grenney and his team, the house is decorated in 50 shades of
beige, with bamboo bones that dont distract from the turquoise
waters and emerald landscape outside. See the results from page 84.

The spiky forms of eryngiums are also very worthy
candidates for a winter garden. Eryngium giganteum

smaller forms such as E. amethystinum are sparkling

Hard matters
EMILY TOBIN looks at the work of three sculptors
who create pieces from stone and its composites
Heavy, unyielding and often impenetrable, stone does not lend
itself to being easily worked, and yet sculptors gravitate towards this
temperamental material. Perhaps it is the allure of a challenge, or its
timelessness, monumentality and permanence. Whatever the appeal,
there is a certain lyricism with which sculptors talk about stone.
Michelangelo declared that every block has a statue inside it and it is the
task of the sculptor to discover it, while Barbara Hepworth loved marble
for its radiance in the light, its hardness, precision and response to
the sun. Remarkably, sculptors working today are still able to coax out
new and imaginative forms from this material, creating works that
are tactile, aesthetic and that bridge the gap between art and nature.

HILDA HELLSTRM
Hilda Hellstrm works in Welsh anthracite and Jesmonite; the latter, strictly speaking, is a
composite, though it shares many of the same qualities as stone. Hildas classically propor-
tioned urns seem to contain entire universes in their surface undulating coloured strata
form swirling shades of midnight blue, cut through with turquoise, pink and sometimes red.
The effect is rather like looking at a mythical landscape from a stratospheric height. There is
this idea that stone is a rigid material, says Hilda, but, like everything else, it is in constant
movement, yet at a much slower pace and thats what intrigues me. Hilda trained at the
Royal College of Art in London, but has since returned to her native Sweden, where she now
works from a converted ceramics factory. Prices start at 800; hildahellstrom.se

To mark 300 years since the birth of Lancelot Capability Brown,
many of the gardens that still reflect his distinctive approach to landscape

BOWOOD
At Bowood, Brown created a beautiful park after being commissioned by William, 2nd Earl of Shelburne, in 1762.
Sloping lawns drift down to the lake, which Brown created by extending a pond. Pictured above left is the Cascade
waterfall; Brown is thought to be responsible for some of the rock work. He originally sited the Doric Temple
in Bowoods Pleasure Grounds, but it was moved to its present position (above right) in the nineteenth century
ALNWICK
The 1st Duke of Northumberland employed Brown in 1750 to landscape the parkland adjoining Alnwick Castle.
He created hills along the roadside to hide the castle from view and originally planned a lake, in which the
Duchess could sail her boat, Esperance. Following a flood in 1771, however, he instead built the Lion Bridge (right)
CHATSWORTH
In 1760, Brown started work at Chatsworth, creating natural-looking pastoral landscape from what had previously
been working farmland, and blurring the distinction between the garden and park, so that the park apparently
came up to the walls of the house. Parterres were converted to pasture, but several important formal features
remained, and a variety of tree species were imported from North America. The River Derwent (opposite and

Mauritius
From trekking in Black River Gorges national park, to cycling in the mountains or
kitesurfing in the south west in the shadow of Le Morne (pictured), Mauritius is not just
flop and drop. There is so much more to do, says Mauritius expert Susie Freeman, of
Susie Freeman Travel. Quite a few hotels offer complimentary golf and all offer inclusive
water sports. With cleanedup roads and new motorways (and driving on the left),
it is easier than ever to explore this multifaceted island.
Among Mauritiuss legendary hotels, the chatter this winter is about Le Touessrok Spa
& Resort, which has been revamped by ShangriLa. As well as many active options
(wakeboarding, sailing, parasailing), it offers guided horse riding by night through the
forests for a more sedate encounter with the natural surroundings.
WHEN TO GO Mauritius is a yearround destination, but high season is October to April.
The winter season (May to August) is reflected in the prices. At this time, the west coast is
lovely as the sea is still warm and it is sheltered from the southeast trade winds.

Take the family! Thats the message from the Maldives in 2016. Islands are investing
heavily in their kids clubs and in activities that allow families to spend quality time
together, says Vanessa Dean from Carrier. Children will be enchanted by the Lha Velaa
(mini turtle) kids club on Velaa Private Island in the northern Noonu Atoll, which is
designed as a waterpark. At Niyama in the southwest Dhaalu Atoll, the kids club on
their 48villa Play island accepts children from 12 months old - the only resort in the
Maldives to do so. Even iconic honeymoon resorts are in the family way, with large, new

Throughout Indonesia, Bali is still the best place for luxury accommodation, dining and
quality of service, says Mike Taylor of ITC Luxury Travel. But there is a growing trend for
people looking to explore more, on Bali and beyond. We have received requests for places
such as Menjangan island off the northwest coast of Bali and the Gili islands off Lombok.
Tapping into this trend are an increasing number of traditionalstyle phinisi sailing ships
that have been newly built and luxuriously kitted out to allow access to remote parts
of the archipelago without the need to forgo comfort. Best booked as one element in a
