The 1982 Chteau Margaux is one of the best of its vintage.
It is powerful and destined to go from strength to strength
if it is stored properly. The new RW 464 with two separately
adjustable climate zones is the perfect solution: with precise
temperature control down to the degree. Vibrations are
cut down to a minimum and the presentation light shows
your wine at its best. The fully extendable bottle trays in
beech and aluminium offer space for up to 101 bottles.
All with the single goal of getting a Margaux ready for the
perfect moment: the tasting. The difference is Gaggenau.
For more information and a list of partners, please tele phone

The nations love of vintage
rages on, and as a fully
fedged, fag-waving, badge-

be braving the crowds (it
really does get busy!) at
Midcentury Modern on 18
March, at Dulwich College
in south-east London.
There are so many quality
pieces there, including
furniture, lighting, artwork
and fabrics, as well as a
section of work by current
designers producing mid-
century-inspired products.
Get there early to grab your
own litle piece of history.

Britain is world-renowned for its high standard of creative
thinking, and with the worlds spotlight on the UK for
the Olympics this summer, the V&A have decided it is
the perfect moment to celebrate the countrys creativity.
Its major spring exhibition, British Design 1948-2012,
opens this month to look at the progression of the creative
industries from post-war to now. A focus of the show will be
to investigate the role that Britains manufacturing industry
has played in the global market, which has prompted this
months feature Make Britain Great (p24), a further look
at the scope of great products made in the UK, and why it
pays to source British for interior design projects. Meanwhile
another aspect of the V&A show will highlight Britains
unrivalled ability to nurture creative talent, which ties in
nicely with our annual showcase of up-and-coming interior
designers (Rising Stars, p16), many of which have trained at
one of the UKs best schools. Plenty to be proud of!

March 2012 | www.idfxmagazine.com
The Design Museum has
released plans for its future
location at the former
Commonwealth Institute building in Kensington, west London.
Designed by John Pawson, the interior of the Grade 2 listed building
will feature galleries for permanent and temporary exhibition space,
an auditorium and a library. Pawson said of the project: There is a
particularly nice symbolism in the fact that in making this legacy for
future generations we are saving a work of iconic architecture. The
buildings 80m renovation will give the museum three times the space
of its current home, and will retain its original roof structure.
The design team has been assisted by Lord Cunlie, a leading
member of the original 1958 architectural team, and James Sutherland,
the original structural engineer. The project also includes a new
surrounding residential development, planned by OMA architects.
The new building is due to open in 2014. www.designmuseum.org

Company Profle
The news is geting out about this
supplier of fnishes and fabrics
Words rebeCCa hoh
Fameed Khalique is one of the UK interior
design industrys best-kept secrets, but that is
all about to change. The supplier of innovative
surface materials has been so busy actually
working with architects and designers on
amazing projects such as one hyde Park with
Candy & Candy, ski chalets with Todhunter
earle and the InterContinental hotel London,
that there hasnt been a need, or indeed time,
to promote the business.
When we start work with a new client, they
always ask: how come we havent come across
you until now? says Khalique. but when you
start a business the most important part is
doing what it is you do, but now we want to
start talking about it and geting it out there.
Formerly marketing director at alma, the
interior leather specialist, Khalique ofers
collections of fnishes, surfaces and fabrics
a mix of products he has personally developed
and by companies worldwide that he represents.
The latest collection is with Lithos Design
dramatic, 3D tiles in marble and stone for both
residential and commercial projects and cut
using the latest revolving laser-saw technology.
other collections include applications
in 24-carat gold, semi-precious stones and
metals, sandstone mosaics, embroideries,
paper, yarn and even recycled bicycle tyres.
To Khalique this is half of the story; the other
half is providing a service particularly tailored
to sourcing and delivering elusive products
when the customer has something distinct
in mind, its website says.
Interior designers and architects are
always looking for something new, something
unusual, so our frst job is to make our clients
go wow so that they can go to their clients
and make them go wow, Khalique explains.
Secondly, we know they need products fast.
They phone and say I need something for a
board tomorrow, and we aim to be the go-to
company that they can trust to say Yes, we
can do that in time, or to let them know very
quickly if we cant. We like to be thought of as
an extra member of staf on the project.
at present Khalique and his team of
three operate from his own apartment-cum-
showroom in Clerkenwell, but by the end of the
year he will be working on the design plans for
a dedicated studio and showcase for his range.
In February Khalique supported the high-
profle Sadlers Wells Gala by creating a fabric
and lighting installation with one of his brands,
Parisian LCD Textiles, which he commissioned
to put together 50 suspended cloud formations
for the theatres auditorium and foyer. The next
12 months will see Khalique carrying on with
a demanding but exciting workload, supplying
materials for schemes with the 20 interior
designers and architects he regularly works
with, and that includes residential projects
with Finchaton in Los angeles and with anna
owens Designs on a London house. Plus the
new business that seems to be coming in daily.

Abbie de bunsen design
After studying English and history
of art, Abbie de Bunsen spent 18
months in the furniture and optical
toy departments at Christies, so
its not surprising that her interior
design features an intriguing mix.
I like combining antiques and
bespoke stylish pieces, often with
extraordinary fnishes, she says. De Bunsen
set up her own practice in 2009 and heads
a team of four tackling a mix of
residential and commercial work.
Her recent projects include the
renovation of the Thomas Williams
Fine Art gallery in Bond Street,
the Albannach restaurant and
whisky bar in Trafalgar Square, and
homes in Notting Hill, Kensington
and Cheshire.

Sophie paterSon
Sophie Paterson credits her
excellent organisational and people
skills so necessary to running a
busy interior design practice to
two previous jobs: one working
in the logistics department for a
newspaper while living in Madrid,
the second as an events manager
for a prestigious restaurant group in London.
She has a degree in business and Spanish
from Bath University and took a CAD course at
KLC before working as an interior designer for
a property developer. In 2008, aged
only 24, she set up her own design
practice, and is already making
a mark with her modern, classic
interiors publishing her frst book,
Style and Glamour, at the end of
2011. She believes that successful
interiors rely on detail. I scrutinise
the detail on everything whether
it is a piece of bespoke furniture or a lighting
design, she says.

romanoS Brihi
After graduating from KLC and
working for several leading London
interior designers and developers,
including Finchatton, Romanos Brihi
set up his own business in 2005.
Half Lebanese and half Welsh, Brihi
was born and educated in London.
His sister, Rima, also interior design-
trained, has recently joined the company.
Our USP is our extensive building and project
management experience, says Brihi, who says
his primary role is to take care of every aspect
of a job: coordinating architects,
contractors and ftters, through to
decorating and furnishing. Regularly
attracting interest with both UK and
European clients thanks to their
city-slick and sophisticated design
aesthetic, the company focuses on
luxury residential projects, but has
also recently completed a prestige
offce refurbishment in central London.

He hadnt even completed his degree in
product and industrial design at Middlesex
University when Ben Rousseau was invited
to join the Design UK team at Designers
Block at 100% Design. Commissions for
his illuminated furniture quickly followed,
and after graduating he was able to set
up Rousseau Design in 2003. Today, his
London-based studio turns its hand to
custom-made lighting-based furniture
and interior products, and the design of
residential and commercial spaces. His
collaborators
include architect
Ian Douglas-Jones
and street artist

His installation for

be unveiled at KBB 2012, and will, he says,
revolutionise how designers use Corian.

Chantel elshout
South African-born Chantel Van
Den Elshout began her career
as a research and style assistant
working on The Sunday Times
Home and Style sections, after
completing a spatial and interior
design course at Chelsea College
of Art and Design. Six years spent
working for two high-end London-based kitchen
retailers led Elshout to set up her own design
consultancy in January 2011, specialising in
kitchens and bathrooms. My aim is to create
beautiful, functional interiors which
refect my clients personalities,
she says. They often know what
they want, but arent sure how to
achieve it. Her latest project is the
refurbishment of a schoolhouse
apartment, with a new kitchen in
a large open-plan living space, as
well as designing and installing two
new bathrooms and creating several pieces of
bespoke furniture.

Monique tollgrD
In 2008, Monique Tollgrd
completed the Inchbalds interior
decoration course, adding the
certifcate to her to BA in English
literature from Christ Church, Oxford.
Originally from South Africa, she
says she has a keen interest in how
geography and culture shape the
way people use their living spaces.
In 2010 Staffan Tollgrd Design Group launched
a design studio in the Algarve, and for the last
two years she has been concentrating on two
modern new-builds near the coast,
both of which have recently been
completed. The sheer scale of
these properties, with their huge
swathes of glass, concrete and
stone, has been an enormously
challenging but ultimately gratifying
experience, she says. Monique
has been married to Staffan
Tollgrd for eight years, and they
live in London with their two young sons.

After 10 years in the banking industry,
Andrew Allen decided it was time for a
career change and chose to develop
his interest in design and architecture,
completing a post-graduate diploma at the
Inchbald two years ago. I set up my own
practice after graduation and am based in
Clerkenwell, which is a really exciting part of
London, he says. The creative industries
are mushrooming here and many of the
residents are very design-conscious.
Allen has tackled a broad variety of
residential and
commercial projects
with his own brand
of innovative and
sophisticated
urban style,
including industrial
conversions as
well as apartments
and a 14th-century

different but equally exciting, he says.

As a route into design, it is an
unconventional one: while Nicola
Harding was studying theology at
Edinburgh University, her design
for a Fringe set was spotted
by Red Bull, which asked her
to create a festival suite for the
brand. After graduating in garden
design from KLC, she worked for
renowned garden designer Arne Maynard for
fve years, and developed her interior design
skills by renovating and selling properties.
Her London-based practice, NH,
tackles both large and small-scale
projects including the decoration
of a houseboat on the Thames,
a Georgian townhouse, and the

Mena interiors
Melanie Rademacher is the driving force
behind Mena Interiors, the company she
set up in 2003 after studying a selection of
architecture courses while at university in
the USA, before qualifying with an interior
design diploma from the Inchbald. She then
spent eight years at Kelly Hoppen Interiors
where she became design director. Today,
Mena Interiors specialises in high-end
residential work, including new-build and
refurbishment projects, and Rademacher
is supported by a team of three. The frms
policy of taking on
no more than six
projects at any one
time ensures that
the team delivers a
highly personalised
style and service to
its clients. I measure
the success of a
project by how it
complements my clients everyday life,
she says. Recent projects include the
refurbishment of a contemporary house
in Geneva and a townhouse in Chelsea.

this year all eyes are on the UK as the
Olympics takeover London, and as a result the
British design industry is having a moment of
patriotism. Exhibitions and events celebrating
British design are popping up everywhere,
including the V&As major show British Design
1948-2012, which will showcase a range of
iconic designs from the Morris Mini Minor to a
model of Zaha Hadids London Aquatics Centre.
While the UK is home to many world-
renowned designers and innovators,
globalisation has led to much large-scale
manufacturing being outsourced abroad,
to the detriment of the nations economy and
employment rates. Small-scale and bespoke
manufacturers face competition from around
the world, and are ofen seen as the less
cost-efective solution in a climate of ever-
tightening budgets.
Interior designers who support and specify
British-made products, such as Ian Smith, argue
that price is not the only factor to consider. The
downside of sourcing in Britain is that skilled
labour is expensive, Smith admits, but this is
outweighed by equally important considerations
such as time, quality and building relationships
with the makers. We have a long heritage in
design and architecture, and we produce a
quality not equaled anywhere.
For his interior design practice, Smith ofen
specifes British-made products by companies
such as Vaughan Lighting, Laurence McIntosh
and Wilton Carpets, and implores his peers
to do the same. We need the industry to
reassess what it is buying and why. Stop buying
products from the other side of the world
if you look for British manufacturers there are
plenty available.
This is echoed by interior designer Joanna
Wood, who is known as a champion of British
produce and makes an efort to source British
before looking elsewhere: Mass-produced
accessories are ofen imported, but if you want
beautifully made furniture, woodwork or sof
furnishings, source British and youll fnd the
prices are competitive.
Wood has found that, especially more
recently, UK clients are keen to support their

own industries, even if it means paying more.
I use the fact that something is made here as
a positive marketing tool. Clients defnitely
respond to that, and will ofen be willing to
increase budgets to cover it, she says.
Wood ofen specifes products by Linley,
Tim Gosling and Bennison, and her support of
British industry has led to partnerships with
Stephen Lewis, founding fabric and wallpaper
brand Lewis & Wood, and John Phillips,
founding lighting company Phillips and Wood.
From the perspective of the manufacturer,
it is this endorsement and investment from
richer and more established companies that
allows the smaller brands to keep up with
their competitors. Bespoke will always be
expensive as there are always development
costs, states Dominic Phillips, son of the
founder of Phillips and Wood, but those costs
are becoming more manageable with the
development of technology that is easier
to use and more widely available. According
to Phillips, a few brave industry heads are
investing in new machinery and methods to
allow competition with the manufacturing
giants of the world such as China and India.
I have seen progress in the right direction and
when the pressures of the current recession
have passed, I think it will continue.
James Mair, founder of furniture retailer
Viaduct, feels that British design and
manufacture are still too disparate, and
that manufacturers need to be much more
receptive. Small companies are the backbone
of manufacture in this country, he says.
There is no shortage of good British designers
who would be delighted to work with British
manufacturers, and designers who appreciate
the problems of manufacture, but many
manufacturers still dont appreciate design.
Its beter than it was, but theres still a long
way to go.
To increase their stature in the global
marketplace, Mair believes British companies
need to see the bigger picture, looking to
expand their international client base with
more investment in exporting their wares.
Well-considered export initiatives are crucial,
together with advice for businesses. I think
retailers and interior designers would happily
promote British design provided it is seen
to be beter than foreign competition in terms
of manufacture, quality of design, lead times
and costing. he says. Its easy to source
from all over the world now, so that is the

The V&A celebrates the best of British with a major
exhibition of design and creative talent from the past
six decades, examining the progression from the last
London Olympics in 1948 to this years event. Iconic
pieces that will include the Morris Mini Minor, a gown
by Alexander McQueen and art by David Hockney,
will chart the most signifcant moments in British
cultural history and its most famous creations. Work
by artists and designers born, trained or working
in the UK will be shown, covering from furniture
and fashion to photography and architecture,
and aiming to investigate how the country
nurtures its creative industries and how its
manufacturing industry has affected its
global presence. Professor Martin Roth,
director of the V&A, said of the shows
timing: As people around the world will
be focusing on the UK this summer, this
is an ideal moment to showcase British
innovation, taste and creativity.

competition that we face.
Jenny Gibbs, principal of the
KLC School of Design, also thinks
manufacturers need to be less
dependent on local demand and
nd ways to aract more business
from abroad. This would restore
condence in the future and stability
of our industry and encourage
investment, she says. Business
Birmingham is an interesting example of
an initiative to regenerate an area. Made
in the UK should be a mandatory form of
labelling to further the brand. Or perhaps we
should take a leaf out of the Fashion Councils
book and have a British Interior Design week.
Original BTC and Davey Lighting exports
approximately half of all its production abroad,
and managing director Peter Bowles urges other
UK-based manufacturers to explore similar
opportunities: British manufacturers need
to be aware that there is a vast international
market out there that appreciates what we do.
According to Bowles, the USA is particularly
keen on British production and design for its
reputation in quality.
A crucial reason many UK-based speciers
choose British produce is to have more input and
control over what they are buying, a factor that
also gives product designers more exibility
during development. For Bowles, bringing the
majority of the companys manufacturing
(including 95 per cent of the components) to
Britain had an immediate impact on quality
and service. Previously the glass we used was
made overseas and oen had impurities. Now
we make the glass ourselves and its much
clearer and purer. Its much more hands-on as
we can get involved in the processes, geing the
detail exactly right.
11
12
Bowles has also noticed that his companies
British production has promotional advantages.
Its a real talking point. Nobody shows o about
products being made in the Far East, but they
certainly like saying they are made in Britain.
We use the Union Jack on our packaging to help
retailers really promote the message, he says.
Mike Meehan, managing director of
luxury bed specialist Vi-Spring, has also
observed resurgence in support for British-
made products. Buying British has become
increasingly in vogue as there are a number
of benets, including reducing environmental
impact, boosting the economy and stringent
safety standards giving people condence they
are purchasing a quality product.
Vi-Spring makes all its maresses in
Devon using only pure British wool, making
it one of the UKs many luxury brands
something Meehan believes is our forte, but
that needs more support. We are operating
in an increasingly competitive climate and

to be successful, the British design industry
needs to maintain its strength of innovation,
he says. At the same time, British designers
need to be supported to turn their creative
ideas into products that sell. If we achieve this,
then well stand a beter chance of continuing
to lead the way in high-end, luxury interiors
manufacturing.
Last year saw the launch of the Associate
Parliamentary Manufacturing Groups (APMG)
Made by Britain project, initiated by Business
Secretary Vince Cable. With an aim to improve
the reputation of the manufacturing sector,
650 MPs were asked to nominate a product
that is manufactured in their constituency.
Among products such as the Dyson vacuum
cleaner and the custard cream, nominations
included furniture by Ercol, which is made
in Buckinghamshire and appliances by AGA
Rangemaster, which has its production centre
in Warwickshire.
This year, John Lewis has also launched a
Made in UK identifer, which will appear on
more than 4,000 products to highlight and
promote their UK origins. The Design Council
reports that 44bn is spent each year on new
engineering and architectural design in the UK,
but at its recent Design Summit, longerterm
plans were on the agenda as MP Mark Prisk
spoke about the Governments plans to draw
students back to careers in manufacturing.
How do we encourage the 43 per cent of young
people who take science, technology, engineering
and maths degrees, he asked, when only fve
per cent then go on into industry, engineering
and manufacture?
Meehan (of Vi-Spring) suggests training
and incentives, while Joanna Wood agrees
that apprenticeships are imperative but
are only viable with fnancial support from
the Government. Gibbs believes the current
Governments emphasis on science and
engineering is advantageous, but seems
unfnished. The best innovations
have historically developed from a
combination of art and science, and it
is this creative, informed approach
that British manufacturers need
to keep their foot frmly in the
international marketplace, he says.
It is this careful fusion of
unique design thinking and
investment in technological
innovation that will keep our
identity truly British.

Wrong
With much to do as design director
of the innovative Established & Sons,
Sebastian Wrong has just launched
another venture

led, limited-edition pieces that garnered much
press coverage and a following among the
design cognoscenti. With Stella McCartneys
husband Alasdhair Willis among the founding
partners the brand was seen to be akin to a
premium fashion label and it became renowned
for hosting exclusive, star-studded parties.
things at Established & Sons have changed
dramatically since then. the global economic
downturn and Willis stepping down as chief
executive in 2010 led to a reassessment of
strategy. Established & Sons had a reputation
for great parties and presentations... People
arent buying our stuf because theyve been to
our parties theyre buying it because they
like the product, and that should be the focus
of what were doing, says Wrong.
that isnt to say that Wrong doesnt still
believe in the importance of puting on a good
show. last years Salone presentation was in
the opulent Versace theatre, with mirrored
walls encircling the collection of new products.
its so important to make an impression in
Milan as its the one time in the year when
everyone in the industry gathers in one place,
explains Wrong. you come away from this
massive overload of stimulii and what do you
remember? not a lot. We want to create an
environment where people have the memory
of having experienced something special.
Wrong says that this year the company
has taken a strategic decision to focus on a
more streamlined selection of products than in
previous years. its a case of less is more for
us now. We want to be very specifc and very
particular about what were developing and

having exhibited a new collection of
products in Milan every year for the past
seven years, Established & Sons has gained
a reputation for spectacular and innovative
presentations and for the quality and
ingenuity of the products it commissions
from leading designers, among them Jasper
Morrison, ronan and Erwan Bouroullec,
Konstantin Grcic and Zaha hadid.
Every product added to the Established
& Sons portfolio has to meet the standards
of originality and manufacturing excellence
demanded by Wrong, who takes great pleasure
in his regular dealings with suppliers around
the world and managing the production of
what are ofen unusual and challenging
designs. i have a real closeness to all our
products. i can tell you far more about them
than any sales person by default because
ive been there from the outset.
Wrongs fascination with 3D form and
materials began at school, where he frst
became interested in sculpture. he went on to
study sculpture at norwich School of Art and
Camberwell College of Art before founding his
own design and manufacturing label. having
achieved recognition in 2001 with the Spun
lamp, now produced by flos, he launched
creative agency the lane with Mark holmes,
experimenting with the development of new
products and the design of exhibitions and
graphic identities.
the launch of Established & Sons coincided
with a period of pre-recession prosperity and
a market that was receptive to the concept-

what were going to be investing in it doesnt
do us any favours to present a product and
have a year or so before it reaches the market.
With CEO Maurizio Mussati now handling
the operational side of the company business
is booming, sales are up and Wrong is
able to devote more time to nurturing the
latest crop of contributors and liaising with
manufacturing companies around the world,
something that he fnds particularly inspiring
and stimulating for his own work.
Over the years Wrong has contributed
numerous successful products to the
Established & Sons portfolio, including the
Font Clock, Heidi Stool and a range of pieces
created in collaboration with the artist Richard
Woods, who applies colourful wood-grained
paterns to various surfaces and materials.
Im exceptionally lucky because my position
within the brand allows me to have a prety
open agenda of what I want to design for
Established & Sons, Wrong says.
Wrong says he has become beter at
managing his own time, enabling him
to explore the opportunities that arise
from the connections he has forged with
manufacturers and other designers. He also
shares his knowledge and experience with
students at the Royal College of Art
in London where he teaches one day a week
on the design products course.
I really enjoy teaching, he enthuses. Im
able to give the students an insight into the
reality of cuting-edge production, costs,
suppliers things that many of them have
litle experience of.
Last October Wrong launched a new
platform for his own ideas and further
collaborations with renowned designers under
the title The Wrong Shop. It focuses on batch
production of a small range of objects and
sits somewhere between open, large-scale
manufacturing and the implementation of
complicated processes used to create limited-
edition gallery pieces.
By making the products to order and selling
them direct to the customer the supply chain is
shortened and a beter
cost structure can
be achieved, he says.
Theres a massive
void between the
high-end and mass
production that a
lot of good ideas are
falling into. Ive seen
many great ideas fail,
primarily because of
the cost of production,
which is why I strongly
believe in this middle
way, he explains.
The Wrong Shop is an experimental
venture, as well as a personal one for Wrong.
He has contributed a corner table that is
manufactured using wood from an oak tree
that came down on his own land. This passion
for provenance has been at the heart of his, and
consequently the Established & Sons, ethos
since the beginning and will continue to defne
the progression of Wrongs career in the future.

The provenance of production is a story which
is ofen overlooked but is really important and

using my knowledge of suppliers and designers
and consolidating them. Its intense and its
exploratory but theres plenty of potential.
Lets hope he can fnd the time.

But now we can access the internet
just as well from the back garden or the
bath, has the home o ce become
redundant? Well, according to the
experts almost the worst place you
can put a laptop is actually on your
lap. Its handy to be able to pick up
the occasional email on the train, but
sit for too long with your shoulders
hunched and your head downwards
and youll face a lifetime of back pain.
Its far beer for productivity and
comfort to position yourself properly
at a comfortable desk.
The most important considerations
in choosing a desk are storage,
functionality and user comfort, says

desk (see next page) has a built-in chair
which conveniently slides out of sight
when not in use.

Furniture agrees: We are all living
in smaller and smaller spaces and
theres a tendency to make smaller
furniture. But its not always practical
and some desks are just too small.
You need space around your laptop to
lay out work, and drawers so you can
put everything away at the end of the
day and not have a big pile of work
staring at you from the corner of the
room. And of course, if the desk looks
gorgeous as well, then it will help with
the motivation to sit down at it and
start working

44 | Q&A
March 2012 | www.idfxmagazine.com
How are you tackling tHe market
conditions? Have you diversified
or explored new sectors?
As a business, Symm saw the signs early and
has been prudent with costs and unnecessary
expenditure. However, the London market
is obviously atractive and Symm has been
involved in London-based refurbishment
projects for many
years, culminating
in opening an ofce
in Chelsea this year.
Since I joined
Symm in 2009 I have
introduced a home
technology service
for audio-visual and
lighting which has
been very successful,
and we have employed
new ideas for Symm
clients, interior designers and architects.
are you maintaining tHe same prices
or are you willing to negotiate?
Certainly we will negotiate a project. Symm
ofers in-house bespoke joinery, stonemasonry,
specialist decorating, building and AV, and
has excellent sub-contractors, so a negotiated
contract is ofen very atractive to the client.
Quality can be maintained across the project.
wHats really exciting
you about Home
tecHnology at tHe
moment? are any
new trends coming
tHrougH?
Interior design has had
a love-hate relationship with all things audio-
visual since the early days of ugly loudspeakers
and box-like TVs. I think they had a point, but
having worked with the industry for over 25
years the technology has developed beyond all
recognition to ofer clever products which are
now easy to conceal and work beter than ever.
wHats tHe relationsHip like between
interior designers and audio-visual?
Its never been beter, and the two work in
harmony producing stunning home cinemas,
versatile audio systems and beautiful lighting
efects. Apples iPad and iPod have, without
question, transformed the way we approach
home technology. Streaming or downloading
flm and music directly to our homes is not only
the future, it is already available. I am working
with an interior designer from Paris called
Bruno Moinard on a London project. He is a
very creative designer.
In terms of new
product, I think the
innovation of digital
media for the home
is interesting; it
distributes flm and
HD television all
around the house from
one central position
over CAT5E cable,
eliminating Sky boxes
and DVD players
clutering up cupboards in rooms all you
have is a fat-screen TV in the room... simple.
wHats tHe mood among tHose youve
talked to recently? is it upbeat, or
are times still as tougH as ever?
The recognised designers are busy but I suspect
fees and margins have been hit, so practices
have shrunk a bit, particularly in London.
However, the international clients quietly move
about ofen unnoticed and they want
quality, high-end crafsmanship, innovation
and service.
There has been movement in high-end
residential, but many of these properties are
under the radar.
is it true to say tHat residential
customers are spending less
and looking for HigHer levels of
quality? How Have you and otHers
reacted to tHat?
Quality will always win through, but during
recessionary times the client, by nature,
thinks that products and services will be
cheaper. Companies react by squeezing
margins to keep the workfow, but this
can be disastrous and counterproductive if
care is not employed. Symm has reacted by
maintaining a transparent and open approach
to the client and their consultants.
Angus
gibson
Director of top-end architecture,
building and restoration company
Symm speaks up for British design
Have you cut down on marketing?
We do not advertise as a rule and our
marketing strategy is client and consultant-
focused. Symm has been involved in the
building and refurbishment of Le Manoir Aux
QuatSaisons for over 25 years and we have
a close relationship with Raymond Blanc, who
is very supportive when we entertain.
Symm sponsors events in the arts and
has for a long time supported its own young
apprentice scheme.
wHat did you make of london design
festival last year?
The British interior design industry does it very
well! The French and Italians are very stylish,
but it is a credit to London that the shows are
richly atended by those from the Continent,
Russia, the Far East and the USA. London
shows of British crafsmanship and high-
quality fnishes to the full; we should be very
proud of our heritage in this area.
Has tHe london factor Helped prop
up tHe market in tHe capital?
London has historically caused a buzz and is
world famous for fashion, design, music, the
arts, retail and architecture, not forgeting
commerce in the City. The London residential
property market never ceases to surprise.

American architect
David Rockwell
debuted his Spotlight
collection with Jim
Thompson at Paris
Dco Off. The designs come as Trevira CS,
linens and silk-cotton blends.
They refect my deep interest in the play
of light and love of natural materials and
textures. The motifs and patterns we used
were inspired by a wide range of our past
projects from hospitality to residential to
theatre. Since Paris Dco Off took place a
day ahead of Maison & Objet, visitors were
able to have a jump start by checking out
the new collections before the myriad of
Maison & Objet-related events.
At the same time, Paris Dco
Off strategically coincides with the
all-encompassing home fashion fair, as it
draws attendees from all over the world
and from numerous diverse industries, and
provides a great opportunity for this new
collection to reach a broad international
audience, and to reach both the residential
and hospitality markets.
Launching our new collection for Jim
Thompson was a fantastic way to start
2012, but were also looking forward to the
opening of W Hotels in Paris and Singapore,
the launch of the Imagination Playground in
a Cart throughout Europe, and a collection
for both Moroso and Maya Romanoff.
www.jimthompson.com
Mona
Perlhagen, founder
and director of
transatlantic but
London-based Chelsea Textiles, launched
the fruits of a collaboration with Kit Kemp
an embroidered fabric range at
Maison & Objet. Its mid-20th-century-
inspired printed fabrics also debuted,
along with new solid wood furniture pieces
inspired by the same period.
As well as our new pieces, we also use
the show to reveal recent lines that havent
been seen in the rest of Europe.
Maison & Objet has become a very
international show, and the only show we
work with outside of the USA. It helps us
attract new audiences and fnd agents,
and its also a great opportunity to meet
with the international design press.
We most look forward to meeting all
the other exhibitors we usually fnd some
wonderful new small companies.
2011 was challenging; I think this year
will be better. We are improving our furniture
production hugely, but this year we will have
a stronger focus on fabrics.

The launches of new spring fabrics at Maison & Object in Paris
and Paris Dco Off in the city's showrooms are major for interior
designers. Looking at it from the other side, we ask the fabric
companies what these two events mean to them, what they
launched this year and how their 2012 business plan is shaping up

British fabric and
wallpaper designer
Lorna Syson used
Maison & Objet
to launch the
Bradbury lounge chair a collaboration
with furniture designer John Luff in oiled
American black walnut using traditional
mortice and tenon joints, and Sysons
Bradbury fabric.
This was my frst year at Maison & Objet,
and it was very exciting. After showing at
Top Drawer and 100% Design for the past
two years, this felt like the right time and
place to make my move into Europe.
I usually have a product launch at 100%
Design each September, but this year I also
had the chair to launch at Maison & Objet
in the NOW section, more geared towards
emerging talent for interiors. It defnitely
helped me build relationships with Italy
and France where I have stockists. It was
great to be involved in such a large trade
fair; the NOW hall alone is almost as big as
100% Design itself. I really looked forward
to meeting new clients and getting more
opportunities from the show. The long hours
were hard, but they are defnitely all worth it!
In 2011 I saw my business develop
further, and the new printed cushions,
lampshades and by-the-metre fabrics
were really well received. This year will see
a collaboration with a larger commercial
screen company, so watch this space! I will
also be moving forward with new designs
and looking at how I can incorporate the
sustainability ethos into the new collection.
Some of the older designs are being
dropped; I think it is important to keep my
designs and brand fresh.

Nicol Favaretto,
CEO of Italian fabric
house Rubelli.
The company
launched Venezia
an opulent collection of fabrics inspired
by the companys Venetian roots, featuring
embroidery, metallic threads, silk and
velvets at its own showroom as part
of Paris Dco Off.
This is the most important international
textile event for us, and it is where we
offcially launch our yearly Rubelli collection.
At this time we target our French clients,
but fnd that we can also connect with our
global distribution here, with representatives
from Moscow, New Zealand, the Middle
and Far East, Australia, the USA, Canada
and South American countries such as
Argentina, all attending.
We just love the way we can hold it
in our own premises welcoming clients
in our showrooms is like welcoming them in
our own house, this is really unique. Theres
no event as important as this in Italy.
In terms of business, 2011 was a
positive year for our company, in fact the
Rubelli Group grew by seven per cent. In
2012 we are confdent that we can expect
more growth, especially as one of our key
tasks for the year will be the development
of our business in the Far East and in South
America. We will focus on launching the
Venezia collection out there, while keeping
a close eye on opportunities to strengthen
our company.
We hope, as do many others, that we
will be leaving the bad economic situation
of 2011 behind.

Tricia Guild OBE,
creative director and
founder of Designers
Guild, used Maison
& Objet to launch its
spring collection: a total of 16 ranges
four for Designers Guild, four for Designers
Guild Essentials, four for Designers Guild
Unlimited and two each for Christian
Lacroix and William Yeoward, plus
accessories and lifestyle products.
Its certainly a busy time for us! Maison
& Objet is the only fair we exhibit at, and
for us, it is an intrinsic part of our launch
schedule. Not only do we see the majority
of our existing customers but we also reach
out to new ones. It is a truly international
fair and we see visitors from so many
countries. I think prospective clients see
Maison & Objet as the perfect place to see
all the key brands under one roof.
What's unique about the fair is that
it is a very thorough and complete look
at interiors and homewares, in particular
home textiles and interior design you
can fnd undiscovered talent and big
established names side by side. It has
an energy and buzz that is only matched
by Salone del Mobile in Milan. We look
forward to its sheer excitement, but not
the exhaustion at the end of it!
www.designersguild.com
Marie Riche is founder of Parisian
company Lalie Design. It used Maison
& Objets dedicated fabric hall, Editeurs,
to show its new fabric designs, entitled
Exuberane, and Plateux, a new series of
trays and plates featuring Lalie Designs
print designs. Riche also unveiled
fame-retardant fabrics more geared
towards the contract market at the show.
Maison & Objet is the most important
meeting event of the year for us. It is where
we do all our product launches and where
we meet new customers and also the press
from all over the world.
It is the best event for a medium-sized
fabric company in France where else
could I meet as
many people all my
target market in fve
days? It is always
full of people who want or are researching
high-quality, beautiful new things.
Because it is a prestigious show, I also
meet people who are usually too busy to
spend time looking for products such as
mine on a day-to-day basis, but they take
the time to attend Maison & Objet.
Our focus for 2012 will be an online shop,
developing our hotel and contract business,
and also targeting architects and interior
designers. The rest will be a surprise!

VINTAGE MOTIFS Fabric design is
having a nostalgic moment with geometric
prints and optical illusions reminiscent of
the Sixties and Seventies. Mahjong by
Elitis shows a striking triangle repeat, while
JABs new spring-summer 2012 collection,
launched at Dco Off, ranges from wide
stripes to small circular patterns, combined
to complement each other.

SKETCHY Expressive and free designs
from the bolder fabric houses could be
straight from an artists sketchbook. French
company Lalie launched its new collection
at Maison & Objet, including Fleur Bleues,
an intricate drawing complete with scribbles,
while Christian Fischbachers Alive design
features oral sketches, seemingly outlined
and randomly coloured in with felt-tips.

PHOTOGRAMS In photography, the
photogram effect is produced by exposing
an object on to light-sensitive paper,
creating a striking negative silhouette.
Companies are using this photogram
aesthetic to give oral designs a more-
contemporary and pared-down look, seen
on Katsu by Larsen at Colefax and Fowler
(pictured) and Anemone by Sahco.

www.sahco-hesslein.com
WATERCOLOUR Companies
are fusing the soft edges and dreamy
landscapes of watercolour painting with
a monochrome palette to give this artistic
technique a modern edge. The new
Segovia design (pictured) from Spanish
brand Gastn y Daniela depicts a hazy
cityscape, while Leo by Pierre Frey is more
abstract, resembling splashes of ink.

As design debuts go, this is surely an impressive
start to an independent career. Interior designer Suzy
Harris only launched her company, Homeology, a few
months before she was introduced to the client who
invited her to take on a period townhouse in the centre
of London. He was the most perfect client, a dream come
true, says a thrilled Harris. How lucky was I!
When she came to the project it was a shell, with
the entire structure taken down to the bare brick. Sacks
Maguire Architects was already working on the project and
Harris was asked to ft in with the existing programme.
Despite being relatively inexperienced in terms of working
light the wAy

lanterns and wall lights
adds an antique feel to the
hallway. Harris and Maguire
changed the hall fooring
to a warm grey stone

with architects, Harris enjoyed working alongside the team:
It was really thrilling for me to collaborate with such an
experienced and professional team. We liaised on what had
already been decided and then they just gave me the plans
and let me get to work. I showed Damian Maguire elements
of my designs things I felt were right by feel and by
instinct. I would say I like this beter or this feels beter,
and he would be able to tell me why it might work from a
technical point of view. So, for example, I said I thought
the bedroom would be beter without the door in a certain
position, so he said Why dont we move it? He was very
complimentary about my work. When I came to work on
the project I felt there were only one or two things about
the scheme I would have done diferently.
Harriss previous work demanded a very quick turnaround
which didnt leave much time for deliberating over design
issues. For several years she worked for In:Style Direct,
a company which specialises in providing landlords with
furniture packages for their lets. A quick turnaround was
a crucial part of the job and Harris ofen worked on as many
as 25 to 30 projects a year, sometimes providing clients with
solutions in less than three weeks.
Harris always knew she wanted her career to go in
a more creative direction so she decided to leave In:Style
Direct and move out of London. She just had time to
compile her portfolio before being introduced to her frst
prospective client.
One of the more creative aspects of this project was
working with lighting designer Craig Jenkins. Harris
commissioned a series of lights for the hall from Jenkins,
including an impressive pendant sculpture which hangs
down through the stairwell for the full depth of the house.
Harris met Jenkins on his stand at Decorex in 2010 and
found his approach refreshing. Suzy liked what I was
doing and chose three designs for this house curved
antique glass lanterns to be placed in the hall, matching
wall lights, and the large hanging ellipsoidal light. says
Jenkins. I was a bit worried at frst as she said the clients
wife wanted something a bit more bling and we also had
only a very narrow space to work with in the stairwell.
But we soon found a great solution, in nickel-brass with
an added crystal sphere at the botom to give the pendant
light a bit more glamour. All the luminaires were designed
in Jenkins London studio and made in Italy.
The client was happy to let Harris do most of the work,
with one exception. The clients 10 year-old son came along
to one meeting with an eight-page spread of ideas for his
bedroom, which were duly considered and implemented.
His was a very modern design and he specifcally asked for
primary yellow to be used; Harris decided to base the room

on the paintings of Piet Mondrian and then included some
20th-century classic pieces to complement the scheme.
The client was delighted with the overall result: I gave
Suzy an open brief, simply asking for it to look elegant and
to provide large beds. Her designs were a very pleasant
surprise. Using the houses Regency facade as inspiration
and liaising with our architect and developers, she
designed an interior that suited the exterior and delivered
a very friendly and original house, flled with beautiful
and interesting things down to the smallest detail. For the
result we got, the price was very reasonable and the whole
project happened almost without a hitch and without any
stress for us.
Harris is now working on a bar project in central
London, a boutique hotel in Salisbury and a penthouse
apartment that she describes as a litle dull. The client
was not confdent enough to go with one of the new
designs I presented. He simply picked out an existing look
from my portfolio. Her career may be taking of but it
could be a while before she fnds a project to beter that of
her frst commission.

Having ofces in London and Dubai proved a distinct
advantage for Blanchard when designing a London
apartment for its Emirates-based client

British interior design company blanchard has ofces in
both London and dubai, which proved very useful when work
started on this apartment in central London.
the client a large emirates-based family commissioned
blanchard to modernise the kensington fat to create a
home from home in the uk. Meetings and consultation with
the client took place in dubai, while the team in London
recommended company associate Sant design to oversee the
work on-site.

The Thirties third-foor apartment had been lef vacant for
several years, so the Blanchard team decided to strip it back
completely to create a 21st-century family home, including
adding heating, air conditioning and secondary glazing.
The brief was very simple, but the client and his family had
very clear ideas for how they wanted each room to work, as well
as for the overall concept of the scheme. The family intended
to use this 180 sq m London home all year round, and asked
for generous, well-proportioned spaces to be created. The team
was asked to use colours that were easy on the eye, combining
chic and sophisticated elegance as well as a comfortable family
home. The new living space comprises an open-plan combined
living and dining room, kitchen, entrance hall and reception
lobby, three bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms, and a further
bedroom and separate guest bathroom.
Blanchard was not the frst interior design practice to work
on the project. Afer a disappointing false start with a Dubai-
based designer, the client-family did their own research to
identify professionals in London and discovered that not
only was Blanchards style a good ft, but also that the
company had ofces in both cities. Blanchard opened its
Dubai ofce in 2006; it now employs a total of fve staf there,
working on mainly residential interior design projects but
also designing for art galleries and hotels. The team has also
accepted architectural commissions, designing villas as well
as interiors for its clients.
The Blanchard London team was led by Anne-Aurelie
Defeche and Mehmet Aktash. They created a contemporary,
cosmopolitan scheme with a neutral, light palete of taupe,
silver, ivory and platinum, with accents of fuchsia and purple.

Furniture was sourced from Blanchard-approved suppliers
in both Dubai and the UK. The design team carefully
considered its options in terms of sourcing furniture and
ftings, eventually opting to fll a container in Dubai which
was then shipped to the UK. We have always tried to do our
part in working together within the design community, as well
as helping to reduce our carbon footprint, explains Aktash.
In this case, the shipment of items from Dubai to London
seemed logical and more cost-efcient in terms of labour, and
an eco-friendly option compared to the alternatives. Loose
furniture items from Dubai made up around 60 per cent of the
apartment fnishes. The remaining 39 per cent was sourced
from London and one per cent from Paris.
Aktash is keen to stress the important role the clients
played in the design process: As ofen happens on our
projects, the generous collaboration of the clients was our
greatest source of inspiration. The time spent developed
the relationship, and led to the the discovery of their likes
and dislikes, and a very sure, innate sense of style.
The project took around 18 months from initial commission
to completion, including six to eight months of design and
procurement planning. The research paid of and the client was
delighted with the results: To say that Blanchard understood
our vision and requirements is a serious understatement
it has a truly brilliant and passionate team.

Shaun Clarksons career has been
a colourful mix of design for hospitality
and interiors, which he and partner Paul
Brewster have now managed to combine in
their latest venture. Their own shop and
cafe, which opened at the end of last year, is
conveniently located directly below Shaun
Clarkson IDs ofces in Pitfeld Street in
Hoxton, the fashionable focal point for the
area east and north of the City of London.
The shop stocks a colourful mixture of
20th-century furniture and found objects,
mixed with gifs and home accessories. There
is space to showcase the work of designers
with Finnish designer Klaus Haapaniemi
the frst to exhibit. His distinctive animal
illustrations a retro mix of fantasy and
folklore were shown applied to woven and
printed textiles that were used to create a
wood-framed bower at the back of the store.
Also on display was Clarksons own range of
wallpapers, which can be printed to order.
Clarkson and Brewsters venture has
been an exciting addition to Pitfeld
Street. This unassuming street has seen
a transformation over the past fve or
so years from an inner city cut-through
to an intriguing combination of
independent retailers that include a
bookshop and Japanese tatoo parlour,
and Clarkson is thrilled to be part of the
street-level experience as well as having
his ofce upstairs.
Interior design is still a very important
part of what Clarkson does and he employs
a team of six designers as well as two
project managers. He is well known for
his commercial work, particularly in the
hospitality sector bars, restaurants,
nightclubs, hotels. Residential work is
also part of his portfolio and one that has
experienced, according to Clarkson, a
fundamental shif he estimates that it is
now about 25 per cent of his business. I am
quite enjoying the process, he says of his
residential work. It feels like I am moving
into residential almost by design. Its a
slightly niche market because they all want
bars and lounge areas. Currently he and his
team are working on fve residential projects,
one in London, one in Dorking, Surrey, two in
Kent and one in Norfolk.
In terms of commercial projects, Shaun
Clarkson ID has just completed the ffh
DelAziz restaurant in London, a 1,300
sq m, 1.5m project; another restaurant,
Bincho, in Exmouth Market; barbecue
takeaway PitCue, on Newburgh Street, and
a backpackers hostel in Kings Cross. While
most of the work is currently in London
there is also a second hostel underway in
Edinburgh. In addition the partners run
two for-hire properties in Norfolk.
Managing such a mix of projects, as well
as dreaming up ideas for more new ventures,
might be difcult for some to keep on top of,
but it doesnt faze Clarkson: Were always
in the process of reorganising but I think I
have a very good business head, and I know
roughly where I am fnancially all the time
Im quite hands on.
Siting in the cafe on Pitfeld Street
just three days afer its opening, Clarkson
jokes that he is now thinking of a range of
accessories (bags, sunglasses and T-shirts).
Hes clearly not one to stand still for long,
and with his track record it would seem likely
that if he does venture into accessories,
it will be the next hit in a long and successful
design career.

highest quality. To be able to sell this range of products you need to
understand high end brand mentality, Just Racks is our mainstream brand,
so we will oer you a great deal of diversity.
We are oering a good rate of commission and all the support you will need,
so all you need to think about is selling and growing the area. Training will be
given and we will work very closely with you to give you all the support to
make you a success.

you are serious and willing to invest time. On
my third visit to Japan in 2009, I was greeted
by the same design practice I had met on two
previous occasions. They said when I lef that
they looked forward to seeing me again next
year, without a hint of a pitch or proposal!
One of the most creatively rewarding projects
I have worked on overseas is the boutique hotel
947 Rooms, in Venice. The name is derived from
the clients fathers restaurant established in
1947 and on the foor
below the hotel. The
combined input of my
expertise with that
of an Italian designer
who had the essential
language skills ensured
excellent client/designer
communication.
Learning the language is
one thing, but a native
speaker has an unrivalled insight into the
countrys nuances and its people. Our meetings
in Venice were conducted around food. We
would eat while we worked or afer a long client
workshop, which created a very interactive and
relaxed atmosphere while still being productive.
Talking with designers it seems that working
for international clients is increasingly the
norm rather than the exception. With the
advance of technology it is easier than in recent
years to communicate your ideas quickly and
reliably, through mediums such as Skype.
One of the most exciting aspects of working
abroad is the possibility of reinvention. Lef
behind are the familiar cultural stereotypes
and you can present yourself and your work in
a new, fresh light. For me the status associated
with having BIID membership has also been

of huge help in establishing credibility,
reputation and a context for design quality.
I was fortunate to visit several countries
last year with the aim of increasing awareness
of interior design and spreading the message
that we can successfully work together and all
beneft. With technology as it is now, it is totally
feasible to be designing in Sweden for a project
in London while on business in the USA!
Boundaries dont really exist as they did
before. We are governed by neither geography
nor language as much as we were in the past.
This global approach to projects is a welcome
addition to UK work for many British designers
and, arguably, an essential business strategy
in the current economic climate.
British interior design has a great reputation
abroad, and ofers a platform for frms to
expand their horizons and prosper.

NEXT MONTH: Vanessa Brady, of the SBID,
will be airing her opinions on interior design issues
My role as international director of the
British Institute of Interior Design (BIID) presents
me with a great perspective of our profession: the
similarities between the sector here in the UK
and overseas, and the key diferences.
What is striking is the energy that designers
abroad possess, though there is no doubt that
UK practitioners are just as passionate and
dedicated. The diferences, I believe, are much
more likely to be cultural theres no less
content or quality in
design, but simply a
diferent approach.
British designers have
much to ofer, which is
why there is such high
demand for our talents
in China, India, Russia
and Singapore. But
are we ready to adapt
to a diferent working
environment, and can we learn from it?
In travelling to several countries every year
I have the chance to see companies at work
and have been surprised by the integration of
teams. For example, during a visit to a major
Spanish lighting company it was clear who the
bosses were, but at the heart of the company
was a very close and special family atmosphere.
This strong sense of family could have been
because of the companys size, but it was
also, I felt, a mark of its evolution and growth
over the years as much as the strong familial
bonds traditional in southern European culture.
Another characteristic in this part of the world
is how much the working hours are dictated by
the climate. Afernoon siestas allow staf to have
a long lunch break and even go home. They then
return with more energy but work later hours,
particularly in the hot summer months.
Discipline and dedication are particularly
strong factors in some countries, such as Japan.
Few leave work early this is felt to indicate a
lack of interest and commitment. For a designer
trying to break into that particular market there
are very high expectations. A long-term game
plan is the best approach. You need to show that
