1 (a) Explain the steps involved in finite element analysis.
(b) What are different types of elements used in FEM.

2 (a) What are the applications of interpolating functions or approximating functions or shape
functions in FEM.
(b) Using Rayleigh-Ritz method determines the deflection at the mid span of a simply
supported beam with uniformly distributed load. Use at least two trigonometric functions
which satisfy the boundary condition for approximating the field variables.

3 (a) Distinguish between plane stress and plane strain problem.
(b) Derive the shape functions for a LST element from first principles.

4 (a) Explain compatibility requirements with respect to displacement, slope and curvature.
(b) Explain the following terms: (i) Global Coordinates. (ii) Natural Coordinates, as applied to
finite elements.

5 (a) Derive the convergence criterion for an isoperimetric element.
(b) Prove that J acobian matrix for a square element in natural coordinates is a unit diagonal
matrix.

6 Derive the strain-displacement matrix [B] for a CST element used for two dimensional
plane-stress/plane-strain problem.

7 What is consistent load vector and obtain the consistent load vector for the element shown
in Figure 1.














8 Write short notes on the following:
(a) Aspect ratio.
(b) Mesh refinement.
(c) Rayleigh-Ritz method.
(d) Lagrangian interpolation function.
(e) Minimum potential energy theorem.
(f) Band width.
