The 5Es of Safety

Promoting a safe transportation system requires a holistic approach considering education, engineering, enforcement, emergency response and equity. These 5Es are the pillars of the SHSP which lay the foundation for goals, objectives and strategics to promote road safety.

Education

A safe transportation system is only effective if users understand how the system works and use it as intended. Education focuses on promoting well-informed roads users aware of how they can help prevent a crash from happening.

Engineering

Roads, bike facilities and sidewalks connect where we work, live, and play. The design of the transportation network needs to promote safe and accessible use by all users. Safety-focused engineering is crucial for promoting overall traffic safety.

Enforcement

Positive road user behavior promotes a safe transportation system for all users. Prevention of poor behaviors through policing can mitigate the effects of unsafe behaviors and hold all accountable to create a safer environment.

Emergency Response

In the event of a crash, quick, and efficient emergency response can be lifesaving and even prevent secondary crashes. The SHSP involves emergency responders so that safe access to a crash scene continues to be a priority.

Equity

An equitable road system allows for users with differing mobilities, accessibilities, and backgrounds to have access to use the transportation network. The SHSP prioritizes safety for all road users by recognizing the importance to provide residents in traditionally underserved communities access to opportunities.
