This study examines the factors that may impact the adoption of generative artificial intelligence (Gen AI) tools for students’ assessment in tertiary education from the perspective of early-adopter instructors in the Middle East. It utilized a self-administered online survey and the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) model to collect data from 358 faculty members from different countries in the Middle East. The Smart PLS software 4 was used to analyze the data. The findings of this study revealed that educators developed new strategies to integrate Gen AI into assessment and used a systematic approach to develop assignments. Moreover, the study demonstrated the importance of developing institutional policies for the integration of Gen AI in education, as a driver factor influencing the use of Gen AI in assessments. Additionally, the research identified significant factors, namely performance expectancy, effort expectancy, social influences, and hedonic motivation, shaping educators’ behavioral intentions and actual use of Gen AI tools to assess students’ performance. The findings reveal both the potential advantages of Gen AI, namely enhanced student engagement and reduced instructor workloads, and challenges, including concerns over academic integrity and the possible negative impact on students’ writing and thinking skills. This study emphasizes the significance of targeted professional development and ethical criteria for the proper integration of Gen AI in educational assessment. Full article

The Tunisian Health Technology Assessment (HTA) body, INEAS, conducted a cost-effectiveness analysis (CEA) of vemurafenib in the treatment of locally advanced or metastatic BRAF V600-mutated melanoma. The objective of this analysis was to enable the use of value-based pricing as a new approach to price negotiation. This study was part of a broader HTA report that was prepared in response to a joint request from the regulatory authorities and the CNAM, Tunisia’s compulsory insurance scheme. Our analysis was based on a probabilistic Markov cohort model that calculated the costs and quality-adjusted life years (QALY) associated with vemurafenib compared to the standard of care from a public payer perspective. The CEA indicated that vemurafenib provides a gain of 0.38 life years (1.78 vs. 1.4) for an incremental cost of USD 101,106.62 from the perspective of the main public payer (CNAM). This study revealed an incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER) of 163,311.40 USD/QALY and 163,911.46 USD/QALY, respectively, from the CNAM and public health facilities’ perspectives. Vemurafenib cannot be considered cost-effective in terms of what has normally been considered a reasonable willingness to pay (WTP) in Tunisia. A significant price reduction would be necessary to bring the incremental cost-effectiveness ratio to an acceptable level. Full article

The increasing focus on sustainability and the circular economy has brought waste-to-energy technologies to the forefront of renewable energy research. However, the environmental impacts and management of contaminants associated with these technologies remain critical issues. This article comprehensively reviews the environmental impacts of converting sewage sludge into energy and fertilizers, focusing on managing potential contaminants and assessing the implications and ecological risks. It also highlights the latest trends in waste-to-energy technologies, waste-to-soil amendment, and their integration into circular economy frameworks. The discussion encompasses challenges and opportunities in optimizing these processes in wastewater treatment plants to minimize pollutants and enhance sustainability. Addressing these challenges is essential for ensuring the long-term viability and acceptance of waste-to-energy solutions, making this topic highly relevant and timely. Full article

Background: The Color Me Healthy symptom reporting app was co-designed with school-age children with cancer, their parents, and clinicians. Preliminary studies demonstrated its feasibility and acceptability; however, children and parents identified the need for additional refinements. Methods: Guided by the Technology Acceptance Model and principles of user-centered design, this study supported refinements to the Color Me Healthy user interface and evaluation of its usability. As the programming team completed builds of the app, school-age children with cancer and their parents participated in cognitive walkthrough usability evaluations and qualitative interviews. Usability logs documented the completion of key tasks related to reporting pain and review of child-reported data. Parents completed the Technology Acceptance Model Perceived Usefulness Scale (TAM-PUS). Interview responses were analyzed using qualitative content analysis. Results: Fourteen children (median age 8.5 years; range 6–12) and 14 parents (median age 38.5 years; range 34–49) participated in one of three usability evaluation cycles. After the third cycle, children and parents navigated the app and completed key tasks independently. Median TAM-PUS scores were 6 (range 6–8), indicating high perceived usefulness. Qualitative analyses indicated that children regarded the app as easy and fun to use. Parents emphasized the app’s developmental relevance for their child and for themselves as the child’s caregiver. Conclusions: This study demonstrates the perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use of the revised Color Me Healthy app. Optimizing the usability of the Color Me Healthy app with attention to the user needs of children and parents positions the app for wider-scale clinical implementation. In recent years, with widespread access to virtual reality (VR) headsets, VR has become an affordable supplement to physiotherapy. Researchers explore the use of existing commercial games or develop new ones to enhance physiotherapy sessions, finding that gamers exhibit reduced nervousness, report less pain, and experience increased enjoyment. However, ensuring consistent exercise adherence poses a challenge. Another area of interest involves integrating robots to aid patients. In our study, we seamlessly integrated a Kuka LBR Med 7 R800 with Unity through a meticulously developed Application Programming Interface (API). This fusion of robotics and video games assists in physiotherapeutic exercises. The games were developed specifically for compatibility with the Oculus Quest 2 virtual reality headset, chosen as the preferred VR platform for this study. Two games, using common game-design concepts with distinct approaches, were evaluated for system acceptance via the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and usability through the System Usability Scale (SUS). In a well-distributed group of 15 participants with an average age of 22 years, greater technology acceptance was observed among women. Those playing more hours per day reported lower perceived ease of use, though one game achieved an excellent SUS rating of 83.3. Conversely, the other game, which was tested with 11 participants with an average age of 20 years, showed a potential negative impact on behavioral intention. The particular sample used in the study has limitations, so the study should be repeated to obtain more reliable and conclusive results. In conclusion, the successful integration of VR and robot assistance in physiotherapy games relies on the proper application of the game design principle. Full article

Process automation utilizes specialized technology and equipment to automate and enhance production processes, leading to higher manufacturing efficiency, higher productivity, and cost savings. The aluminum die casting industry has significantly gained from the implementation of process automation solutions in manufacturing, serving safety-critical sectors such as automotive and aerospace industries. However, this method of component fabrication is very susceptible to generating manufacturing flaws, hence necessitating adequate non-destructive testing (NDT) to ascertain the fitness for use of such components. Machine learning has taken the center stage in recent years as a tool for developing automated solutions for detecting and classifying flaws in digital X-ray radiography. These machine learning-based solutions have increasingly been developed and deployed for component inspection, to keep pace with the high production throughput in manufacturing industries. This work focuses on the development of a defect grading algorithm that assesses detected flaws to ascertain if they constitute a defect that could render a component unfit for use. Guided by ASTM 2973-15; Standard Digital Reference Images for Inspection of Aluminum and Magnesium Die Castings, a grading pipeline utilizing K-D (k-dimensional) trees was developed to effectively structure detected flaws, enabling the system to make decisions based on acceptable grading terms. This solution is dynamic in terms of its conformity to different grading criteria and offers the possibility to achieve automated decision making (Accept/Reject) in digital X-ray radiography applications. This study investigates the impact of the attitudes of the elderly on the acceptance of Thailand’s high-speed rail technology according to the technology readiness index (TRI) and technology acceptance model (TAM) theories as guidelines for policies or strategies to enhance passengers’ intentions to use high-speed rail. A self-administered questionnaire was used to collect data from 3200 elderly people aged over 60 years in the surveyed areas along high-speed rail routes in Thailand, before the use of statistical analysis and multigroup structural equation modeling (SEM) to analyze variations in the participants’ attitudes toward urban and rural areas. The results that were thus obtained from both groups showed their differing attitudes toward the acceptance of technology. The TAM theory considers the attitude toward high-speed rail use in urban areas to be important, while, in rural areas, attitudes and perceived usefulness are important. With respect to the ease of use of high-speed rail, the most important factors were attitudes toward use and perceived usefulness. For the TRI theory, innovativeness features as the most positive influence on the perceived ease of high-speed rail use in both groups. Optimism and innovativeness were positive influences, but discomfort and insecurity carried a negative influence with respect to the perceived ease of use and usefulness. Full article

With people’s concern for health and the development of medical technology, medical products for children are gradually appearing in pharmacies and online stores. However, the appearance of most children’s household medical products tends to meet the needs of adults, which leads to low acceptance of medical products. This study aimed to explore 10- to 16-year-old children’s visual and tactile perception of different materials by researching the relationship between the psychological quantities of visual and tactile perception and the physical quantities of the material surface. Based on the theory of kansei engineering, we measured the physical quantities of nine materials used in insulin syringe products and administered a perceptual questionnaire test for children. By correlating subjective perceptions with the physical attributes of the materials’ surfaces, we determined a strong correlation between the visual and tactile psychological properties and the properties of the materials’ surfaces. Children clearly perceive materials, and materials with lower roughness can elicit calmness, while materials with higher gloss elicit negative emotions. This paper establishes an evaluation model and provides a scientific selection method for surface materials in different children’s household medical products. Full article

With their potential for high returns and expanding role in the financial landscape, cryptocurrency investments have garnered the attention of the financial press and investors. Applying an integrated research model based on the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT), this study investigates the factors influencing individual investors’ attitudes toward cryptocurrency investments and their intention to continue investing. The model incorporates constructs such as performance expectancy, effort expectancy, social influence, perceived risk, perceived privacy, technology competency, perceived enjoyment, and prior experience. Data from 506 cryptocurrency investors located in the United States were collected through a 50-item questionnaire. The findings indicate that performance expectancy and perceived enjoyment positively impact attitudes toward cryptocurrency investments, which, in turn, influence the intention to continue investing. Perceived privacy positively affects performance expectancy, while technology competency enhances effort expectancy. These results offer valuable insights for policymakers and cryptocurrency exchanges to foster sustainable growth in the cryptocurrency market. Despite its contributions, the study acknowledges limitations, including a focus on current investors in the US and the exclusion of factors such as optimism and innovativeness. Future research should explore these aspects across different populations and regions to gain a more comprehensive understanding of cryptocurrency investment behavior. Full article

Background: With an aging population and the continuous advancement of smart technology, the Chinese government is exploring smart elderly care models to address the challenges posed by aging. Although smart home systems are viewed as a promising solution, their adoption rate among older people remains low. Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the factors influencing the behavioral intention to use smart home systems among older people in Linyi City, Shandong Province, China. Methods: A literature review revealed a lack of quantitative research on older people’s behavioral intention toward smart home systems based on the Innovation Diffusion Theory. This study developed an extended model based on the Innovation Diffusion Theory, Technology Acceptance Model, and external variables, incorporating eight variables: intergenerational technical support, perceived cost, self-reported health conditions, compatibility, observability, trialability, perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, and behavioral intention. Results: Analysis of 387 valid questionnaires showed that compatibility and trialability significantly and positively affect perceived ease of use, while self-reported health conditions, perceived ease of use, and perceived usefulness have significant effects on behavioral intention. In addition, perceived cost had a negative influence on behavioral intention. Contributions/Significance: These findings highlight the importance of considering these factors in the design of smart home systems to improve user experience and provide valuable practical guidance to smart home system developers, R&D institutions, and policymakers. Fighting climate change has become a major task worldwide. One of the key energy sectors to emit greenhouse gases is transportation. Therefore, long term strategies all over the world have been set up to reduce on-road combustion emissions. In this context, the road freight sector faces significant challenges in decarbonization, driven by its limited availability of low-emission fuels and commercialized zero-emission vehicles compared with its high energy demand. In this work, we develop the Mobility and Energy Transportation Analysis (META) Model, a python-based optimization model to quantify the impact of transportation projected policies on freight transport by projecting conventional and alternative fuel technologies market acceptance as well as greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Along with introducing e-fuels as an alternative refueling option for conventional vehicles, META investigates the market opportunities of Mobile Carbon Capture (MCC) until 2050. To accurately assess this technology, a techno-economic analysis is essential to compare MCC abatement cost to alternative decarbonization technologies such as electric trucks. The novelty of this work comes from the detailed cost categories taken into consideration in the analysis, including intangible costs associated with heavy-duty technologies, such as recharging/refueling time, cargo capacity limitations, and consumer acceptance towards emerging technologies across different regions. Based on the study results, the competitive total cost of ownership (TCO) and marginal abatement cost (MAC) values of MCC make it an economically promising alternative option to decarbonize the freight transport sector. Both in the KSA and EU, MCC options could reach greater than 50% market shares of all ICE vehicle sales, equivalent to a combined 35% of all new sales shares by 2035. Full article

New information and communication technologies have a significant potential to increase the transparency of aquifer management and improve groundwater governance. This research experiments the introduction of a mobile application that allows users to transfer and share information about their groundwater extractions and receive agroclimatic information and groundwater data. It takes place in three different aquifers in Morocco, Portugal, and Spain, each with varied institutional frameworks. This research tests and evaluates the potential of enhanced information systems and citizen science applied to groundwater management and aims to identify some factors that facilitate or hinder their adoption and implementation. To do this, the researchers developed a 4-year plan based on surveys, semi-structured interviews, meetings, participatory workshops, and public round tables with local actors. The main lesson learned from the comparative analysis of these three experiences is that the use of enhanced information systems is more positively perceived, accepted, and adopted when an appropriate social and institutional framework exists and that the more consolidated this framework is, the easier they will be to implement and develop enhanced information systems. Blue light accelerates retinal aging. Previous studies have indicated that wavelengths between 400 and 455 nm are most harmful to aging retinal pigment epithelia (RPE). This study explored whether filtering these wavelengths can protect cells exposed to broad sunlight. Primary porcine RPE cells loaded with 20 µM A2E were exposed to emulated sunlight filtered through eye media at 1.8 mW/cm2 for 18 h. Filters selectively filtering out light over 400–455 nm and a dark-yellow filter were interposed. Cell damage was measured by apoptosis, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) production, and mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP). Sunlight exposure increased apoptosis by 2.7-fold and H2O2 by 4.8-fold, and halved MMP compared to darkness. Eye Protect SystemTM (EPS) technology, filtering out 25% of wavelengths over 400–455 nm, reduced apoptosis by 44% and H2O2 by 29%. The Multilayer Optical Film (MOF), at 80% of light filtered, reduced apoptosis by 91% and H2O2 by 69%, and increased MMP by 73%, overpassing the dark-yellow filter. Photoprotection increased almost linearly with blue-violet light filtering (400–455 nm) but not with total blue filtering (400–500 nm). Selective filters filtering out 25% (EPS) to 80% (MOF) of blue-violet light offer substantial protection without affecting perception or non-visual functions, making them promising for preventing light-induced retinal damage with aesthetic acceptance for permanent wear. Social networks have become a significant part of people’s daily lives, particularly in the purchasing process. In this context, digital influencers have played an essential role in shaping consumers’ opinions. In this sense, studying the role of social networks and influencers in the online product purchase decision process was considered pertinent. We selected two technology adoption models to fulfill this purpose: the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT). We conducted an exploratory study using a quantitative approach, with data being collected through a questionnaire distributed online. The statistical analysis of the empirical model employed a partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) technique. Analyzing the 135 responses allowed us to conclude that social networks are relevant in consumers’ purchase decision process. This research highlights the importance of the credibility of influencers, emotional connections with audiences, and the dynamics of the media in shaping consumer behavior. It highlights the strong influence of digital influencers on purchasing decisions and makes a methodological contribution with a rigorous empirical model. This study also suggests avenues for future research in order to deepen the understanding of influencer and social media marketing strategies. Full article

This study explores the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) tools on the purchase intentions of members of Generation Z (Gen Z) in online shopping, using an adapted technology acceptance model (TAM). It incorporates exposure to AI, usage of AI, and knowledge about AI, alongside the existing TAM parameters of perceived usefulness of AI (PUAI) and perceived ease-of-use of AI (PEUAI). A 38-item questionnaire was distributed, yielding data from 1128 Gen Z respondents. Partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) and importance–performance analysis (IPA) were applied to examine the hypothesized relationships. The study identified significant direct effects of exposure, use, and knowledge on PUAI and PEUAI, and that these effects affected consumers’ purchase intentions. Indirect effects analysis revealed that PUAI and PEUAI mediate between AI exposure, use, knowledge, and purchase intentions, suggesting that greater understanding of and familiarity with AI enhance the propensity to engage in AI-powered online transactions. The ease of integrating AI into daily life and perceived AI utility enhance purchase intentions. The study offers insights for online retailers leveraging AI technologies in an effort to enhance consumer purchase experiences, emphasizing the potential of AI to positively influence choices while enhancing trust, familiarity, and the overall user experience.
