Background: High-grade serous carcinoma (HGSC) is the most lethal of gynecological cancers in developed countries. It usually presents late with non-specific symptoms and most cases are diagnosed at an advanced stage, with 5-year overall survival being around 40%. Biomarkers for screening and early diagnosis of this aggressive disease are, thus, a research priority. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) that reflect the cell of origin and that can be isolated from local fluid and plasma by minimally invasive liquid biopsy are such promising biomarkers. Besides EV concentration and molecular profile, which have been the main focus of research for many years, recent studies have also called attention to EV size distribution. The aim of our study was to evaluate the potential of EV concentration and size distribution in local fluid and plasma as diagnostic biomarkers for HGSC. Methods: Paired pretreatment ascites and plasma samples from 37 patients with advanced HGSC and paired pretreatment free peritoneal fluid (FPF) and plasma samples from 40 controls with benign ovarian pathology (BOP) were analyzed using nanoparticle tracking analysis (NTA). Results: We observed a significant difference in EV concentration in local fluid, but not in plasma, between HGSC patients and the control group. We also found a significant difference in EV size distribution in both local fluid and plasma between HGSC patients and the control group. The receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curve analysis of EV characteristics showed excellent diagnostic performance for the mode, D10, and D50 in local fluid and acceptable diagnostic performance for EV concentration and mean EV size in local fluid, as well as for the mode and D10 value in plasma. Conclusions: The results of our study show that EV concentration in local fluid and more importantly EV size distribution in both local fluid and plasma are significantly changed in the presence of HGSC. Future research of size-dependent molecular profiling of EVs could help identify novel diagnostic biomarkers for HGSC. Full article

Background: Esophageal cancer (EC) remains a significant health challenge in South Asia, with poor prognosis despite advancements in diagnostics and treatment. Identifying and validating prognostic factors is essential for improving patient outcomes. Methods: A prospective study was conducted with 146 biopsy-confirmed EC patients at the Dr. Ruth K.M. Pfau Civil Hospital, Karachi, Pakistan. Clinical and laboratory data were collected and analyzed using descriptive statistics, receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis, and the Chi-square test. Survival outcomes were assessed using Kaplan–Meier curves, log-rank tests, and Cox proportional hazard models for univariate and multivariate regression analyses, with statistical significance set at p ≤ 0.05. Results: Bivariate analysis showed significant associations of the neutrophil lymphocyte ratio (NLR) (p = 0.017), C-reactive protein to albumin ratio (CAR) (p = 0.033), red cell distribution width to platelet ratio (RPR) (p = 0.020), and systemic immune-Inflammation index (SII) (p = 0.009) with patient survival. Univariate analysis identified tumor length >10 cm (p = 0.016), T4 stage (p = 0.015), metastasis (p < 0.001), surgery not performed (p < 0.001), and SII (p = 0.022) as significant factors for survival, with higher SII linked to poorer overall survival (p = 0.020). Interestingly, in the multivariate model, only metastasis (p < 0.001) and surgery not performed (p = 0.011) remained significant. Conclusions: Immuno-inflammatory markers may be less pertinent prognostic factors for EC in the South Asian population. Full article

The integration of renewable energy sources and distributed energy storage systems increasingly complicates the operation of distribution networks, while stringent carbon reduction targets demand low-carbon operational strategies. To address these complexities, this paper introduces a two-stage model for reconfiguring distribution networks and ensuring low-carbon dispatch. Initially, second-order cone programming is employed to minimize losses in the network. Subsequently, the outputs of renewable energy and energy storage systems are optimized using the mantis search algorithm (MSA) to achieve low-carbon dispatch, with the network’s carbon potential as the evaluation metric. The proposed model demonstrates a significant reduction in average active power loss by 34.85%, a decrease in daily carbon emissions by 509.97 kg, and a reduction in carbon emission costs by 17.24%, thereby markedly enhancing the economic and social benefits of grid operations. Moderate-Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) Nadir Bidirectional Reflectance Distribution Function (BRDF)-Adjusted Reflectance (NBAR) products are being increasingly used for the quantitative remote sensing of vegetation. However, the assumption underlying the MODIS NBAR product’s inversion model—that surface anisotropy remains unchanged over the 16-day retrieval period—may be unreliable, especially since the canopy structure of vegetation undergoes stark changes at the start of season (SOS) and the end of season (EOS). Therefore, to investigate the MODIS NBAR product’s temporal effect on the quantitative remote sensing of crops at different stages of the growing seasons, this study selected typical phenological parameters, namely SOS, EOS, and the intervening stable growth of season (SGOS). The PROBA-V bioGEOphysical product Version 3 (GEOV3) Fractional Vegetation Cover (FVC) served as verification data, and the Pearson correlation coefficient (PCC) was used to compare and analyze the retrieval accuracy of FVC derived from the MODIS NBAR product and MODIS Surface Reflectance product. The Anisotropic Flat Index (AFX) was further employed to explore the influence of vegetation type and mixed pixel distribution characteristics on the BRDF shape under different stages of the growing seasons and different FVC; that was then combined with an NDVI spatial distribution map to assess the feasibility of using the reflectance of other characteristic directions besides NBAR for FVC correction. The results revealed the following: (1) Generally, at the SOSs and EOSs, the differences in PCCs before vs. after the NBAR correction mainly ranged from 0 to 0.1. This implies that the accuracy of FVC derived from MODIS NBAR is lower than that derived from MODIS Surface Reflectance. Conversely, during the SGOSs, the differences in PCCs before vs. after the NBAR correction ranged between –0.2 and 0, suggesting the accuracy of FVC derived from MODIS NBAR surpasses that derived from MODIS Surface Reflectance. (2) As vegetation phenology shifts, the ensuing differences in NDVI patterning and AFX can offer auxiliary information for enhanced vegetation classification and interpretation of mixed pixel distribution characteristics, which, when combined with NDVI at characteristic directional reflectance, could enable the accurate retrieval of FVC. Our results provide data support for the BRDF correction timescale effect of various stages of the growing seasons, highlighting the potential importance of considering how they differentially influence the temporal effect of NBAR corrections prior to monitoring vegetation when using the MODIS NBAR product. Conspecific amphibian populations may vary widely in local demography and average body size throughout their geographical range. The environmental drivers of variation may reflect geographical gradients or local habitat quality. Among fire salamander populations (Salamandra salamandra), local demography shows a limited range of variation because high concentrations of skin toxins reduce mortality from predation to a minimum, whereas average adult body size varies significantly over a wide range. This study on four neighboring populations inhabiting the catchments of low-order streams in the upper middle Rhine Valley (Koblenz, Germany) focuses on the identification of local environmental drivers of variation in age and body size. I collected 192 individuals at two localities per stream, measured snout–vent length, clipped a toe for posterior skeletochronological age determination, and released salamanders in situ again. Populations were similar in age distribution. Local habitat quality accounted for a significant proportion of demographic variability, mediated by the impact of landscape-induced mortality risk, including roads and agriculture. Still, the main effect of variation in habitat quality was on adult body size, the result of growth rates of aquatic larvae and terrestrial juveniles. Larvae exposed to non-lethal heavy metal contamination in streams developed into smaller juveniles and adults than clean-water larvae, providing evidence for carry-over effects from one stage to another. The generally small average adult size in the Rhine Valley populations compared to those in other parts of the distribution range indicates the action of a still unidentified environmental driver. Evaluation of pharmacokinetic properties is a significant step at the early stages of drug development. In this study, an in vitro evaluation of the pharmacokinetic properties of five newly synthesized compounds was performed. These compounds belong to N-hydroxyurea and hydroxamic acid derivatives and analogs of NSAIDs indomethacin, flurbiprofen, diclofenac, ibuprofen, and naproxen (compounds 1, 2, 3, 11, and 12, respectively) with dual COX-2 and 5-LOX inhibitory activity. Two in vitro methods (biopartitioning micellar chromatography (BMC) and PAMPA) were used to evaluate passive gastrointestinal absorption, while high-performance affinity chromatography (HPAC) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) were used to evaluate binding to human serum albumin (HSA). The introduction of N-hydroxyurea and hydroxamic acid groups into the structure of NSAIDs decreases both expected passive gastrointestinal absorption (BMC k values were from 3.02 to 9.50, while for NSAIDs were from 5.29 to 13.36; PAMPA –logPe values were between 3.81 and 4.76, while for NSAIDs were ≤3.46) and HSA binding (HPAC logk values were from 2.03 to 9.54, while for NSAIDs were ≥11.03; DPV peak potential shifts were between 7 and 34, while for NSAIDs were ≥54). Structural modifications of all tested compounds that increase lipophilicity could be considered to enhance their passive gastrointestinal absorption. Considering lower expected HSA binding and higher lipophilicity of tested compounds compared to corresponding NSAIDs, it can be expected that the volume of distribution of compounds 1, 2, 3, 11, and 12 will be higher. Reduced HSA binding may also decrease interactions with other drugs in comparison to corresponding NSAIDs. All tested compounds showed significant microsomal instability (25.07–58.44% decrease in concentration) in comparison to indomethacin (14.47%) and diclofenac (20.99%). Full article

Rice production remains highly dependent on nitrogen (N). There is no positive linear correlation between N concentration and yield in rice cultivation because an excess of N can unbalance the distribution of photo-assimilates in the plant and consequently produce a lower yield. We intended to study these imbalances. Remote sensing is a useful tool for monitoring rice crops. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of using remote sensing to assess the impact of N applications on rice crop behavior. An experiment with three different doses (120, 170 and 220 kg N·ha−1) was carried out over two years (2021 and 2022) in Valencia, Spain. Biomass, Leaf Area Index (LAI), plants per m2, yield, N concentration and N uptake were determined. Moreover, reflectance values in the green, red, and NIR bands of the Sentinel-2 satellite were acquired. The two data matrices were merged in a correlation study and the resulting interpretation ended in a protocol for the evaluation of the N effect during the main phenological stages. The positive effect of N on the measured parameters was observed in both years; however, in the second year, the correlations with the yield were low, being attributed to a complex interaction with climatic conditions. Yield dependence on N was optimally evaluated and monitored with Sentinel-2 data. Two separate relationships between NIR–red and NDVI–NIR were identified, suggesting that using remote sensing data can help enhance rice crop management by adjusting nitrogen input based on plant nitrogen concentration and yield estimates. This method has the potential to decrease nitrogen use and environmental pollution, promoting more sustainable rice cultivation practices. Full article

Background/Objectives: In Korea’s emergency medical system, when an emergency patient arises, patients receive on-site treatment and care during transport at the pre-hospital stage, followed by inpatient treatment upon hospitalization. From the perspective of emergency patient management, it is critical to identify the high death rate of patients with certain conditions in the emergency room. Therefore, it is necessary to compare and analyze the determinants of the death rate of patients admitted via the emergency room and generally hospitalized patients. In fact, previous studies investigating determinants of survival periods or length of stay (LOS) primarily used multiple or logistic regression analyses as their main research methodology. Although medical data often exhibit censored characteristics, which are crucial for analyzing survival periods, the aforementioned methods of analysis fail to accommodate these characteristics, presenting a significant limitation. Methods:Therefore, in this study, survival analyses were performed to investigate factors affecting the dying risk of general inpatients as well as patients admitted through the emergency room. For this purpose, this study collected and analyzed the sample cohort DB for a total of four years from 2016 to 2019 provided by the Korean National Health Insurance Services (NHIS). After data preprocessing, the survival probability was estimated according to sociodemographic, patient, health checkup records, and institutional features through the Kaplan–Meier survival estimation. Then, the Cox proportional hazards models were additionally utilized for further econometric validation. Results: As a result of the analysis, in terms of the ‘city’ feature among the sociodemographic characteristics, the small and medium-sized cities exert the most influence on the death rate of general inpatients, whereas the metropolitan cities exert the most influence on the death rate of inpatients admitted through the emergency room. In terms of institution characteristics, it was found that there is a difference in determinants affecting the death rate of the two groups of study, such as the number of doctors per 100 hospital beds, the number of nurses per 100 hospital beds, the number of hospital beds, the number of surgical beds, and the number of emergency beds. Conclusions: Based on the study results, it is expected that an efficient plan for distributing limited medical resources can be established based on inpatients’ LOS. Full article

Crimped wool in Tan sheep gradually transitions to straight wool after 35 days (the er-mao stage), which reduces its commercial value. To investigate the changes in wool proteins during this stage, we performed comparative proteomic analysis of the straight and crimped wool using tandem mass tag (TMT)-based quantification. The mean fur curvature (MFC) of crimped wool was significantly greater than that of straight wool (p < 0.001). We identified 1218 proteins between the two types of wool, including 50 keratins (Ks) and 10 keratin-associated proteins (KAPs). There were 213 differentially expressed proteins, including 13 Ks and 4 KAPs. Crimped wool showed relatively high abundances of KAP24-1, K84, K32, K82, and intermediate filament rod domain-containing protein (IRDC), whereas straight wool had relatively high abundances of K6A, K27, K80, KAP16-1, KAP27-1, and trichohyalin (TCHH). The expression levels of KAP16-1, KAP24-1, and KAP27-1 were related to the ratio of paracortex, which may be associated with wool crimp formation. Additionally, high expressions of TCHH, K27, and K6A in the inner root sheath (IRS) were linked to fiber fineness in straight wool. These findings provide insight into the overall expression and distribution patterns of Ks and KAPs, offering opportunities to improve wool quality and enhance its economic potential in the textile industry. Background: Receptor-interacting protein kinases (RIPKs) and mixed-lineage kinase domain-like protein (MLKL) are crucial in regulating innate immune responses and cell death signaling (necroptosis and apoptosis), and are potential candidates for genetic improvement in breeding programs. Knowledge about the RIPK family and MLKL in sea cucumber remains limited. Methods: We searched the genomes of sea cucumber Holothuria leucospilota for genes encoding RIPKs and MLKL, performed phylogenetic tree, motif and functional domain analyses, and examined tissue distribution and embryonic development patterns using qPCR. Results: RIPK5 (Hl-RIPK5), RIPK7 (Hl-RIPK7) and MLKL (Hl-MLKL) were identified in sea cucumber H. leucospilota. Hl-RIPK5 and Hl-RIPK7 were mainly expressed in coelomocytes, suggesting that they play a role in innate immunity, whereas Hl-MLKL exhibited relatively low expression across tissues. During embryonic development, Hl-MLKL was highly expressed from the 2-cell stage to the morula stage, while Hl-RIPK5 and Hl-RIPK7 were primarily expressed after the morula stage, indicating different roles in embryonic development. In primary coelomocytes, Hl-RIPK5 transcriptional activity was significantly depressed by LPS, poly(I:C), or pathogen Vibrio harveyi. Hl-RIPK7 expression levels were unchanged following the same challenges. Hl-MLKL mRNA levels were significantly decreased with poly(I:C) or V. harveyi, but did not change with LPS. Conclusions: These findings provide valuable insights into the evolutionary tree and characterization of RIPK and MLKL genes in sea cucumber, contributing to the broader understanding of the RIPK gene family and MLKL in ancient echinoderms. In this study, we explore the concept of symmetry as it applies to the dynamics of the Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) epidemic model. By incorporating symmetric principles in the stochastic model, we ensure that the control strategies derived are not only effective but also consistent across varying conditions, and ensure the reliability of our predictions. This paper presents a stochastic optimal control analysis of an HBV epidemic model, incorporating vaccination as a pivotal control measure. We formulate a stochastic model to capture the complex dynamics of HBV transmission and its progression to acute and chronic stages. By leveraging stochastic differential equations, we examine the model’s stationary distribution and asymptotic behavior, elucidating the impact of random perturbations on disease dynamics. Optimal control theory is employed to derive control strategies aimed at minimizing the disease burden and vaccination costs. Through rigorous numerical simulations using the fourth-order Runge–Kutta method, we demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed control measures. Our findings highlight the critical role of vaccination in controlling HBV spread and provide insights into the optimization of vaccination strategies under stochastic conditions. The symmetry within the proposed model equations allows for a balanced approach to analyzing both acute and chronic stages of HBV. Full article

Magmatic Evolution and Nb-Ta Enrichment of Early Jurassic Granitic Porphyry from the Shangxiahu Nb-Ta Deposit of the Nanling Range

The Shangxiahu Nb-Ta deposit is located in the Yongding region of Fujian Province, the south-eastern section of the Nanling Range, South China. A series of Nb-Ta deposits, associated with granitic porphyries, are present in the Yongding region. Nevertheless, the genesis of the Nb-Ta mineralisation remains practically ambiguous, and further study of the latest Nb-Ta granitic porphyries in the Nanling Range may prove beneficial in understanding the mineralisation mechanism. This paper presents a detailed analysis of the petrographic, geochemical, chronological and isotopic characteristics of the Shangxiahu granite porphyry. Shangxiahu granite porphyry is high-potassium subalkaline granite. The Rittman index (δ) is < 3.3, indicating a calc-alkaline signature. The aluminium saturation index (A/CNK) is >1.1, indicating a strong peraluminous nature. Furthermore, the rare earth elements diagram exhibits Eu-negative anomalies and an M-type ‘tetrad effect’, while the multi-element distribution patterns diagram shows an overall right-leaning trend. The SIMS zircon U-Pb age of the Shangxiahu granite porphyry is 183.2 ± 3.2 Ma, revealing the emplacement of the granite porphyry in the Early Jurassic. The high Zr + Nb + Ce + Y content and Ga/Al ratios, along with the zircon saturation temperature TZr value of 1033 °C, indicate that the Shangxiahu granite porphyry exhibits the characteristics of a highly differentiated A-type granite. The Sr-Nd isotope signatures indicate that the Nb-Ta-bearing magma was formed by the mixing of crust–mantle material. The evolution and mineralisation process of granite porphyry in the Shangxiahu Nb-Ta deposit can be divided into four principal stages: (1) the upwelling of Asthenosphere material due to the extensional background induced partial melting of the crust; (2) the mixing of mantle-derived magma and crustal-derived magma; (3) magmatic fractional crystallisation and (4) magma–hydrothermal interaction. Combined with the reported data of Yongding Daping niobium-tantalum mining area, it can be postulated that the enrichment of Nb-Ta ores in Shangxiahu is primarily the result of the upwelling of Asthenosphere material, which caused the partial melting of the niobium-rich Mesoproterozoic crust with high Nb/Ta value. The enrichment of Nb-Ta ore bodies in Daping is primarily attributed to the fractional crystallisation of the magma and the hydrothermal alteration, which is postulated to be associated with the presence of a crust exhibiting elevated Nb/Ta ratios in Yongding. Additionally, it is postulated that ore may be found in area with high crustal source components in the crust–mantle mixed zone. There may be high volatile-rich Nb-Ta orebodies and Sn-rich and W-rich orebodies at depth or in the surrounding area. Full article

Objective: Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is a rare malignant tumor that mainly arises in the head and neck area. We aimed to compare the long-term survival of patients with ACC based on their geographic regions within the United States using the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) registry data. Methods: We queried the SEER database to evaluate the geographic distribution of ACC patients based on inpatient admissions. The states included in the study were divided into four geographical regions (Midwest, Northeast, South, and West) based on the U.S. Census Bureau-designated regions and divisions. Demographic and clinical variables were compared between the groups. Kaplan–Meier curves and Cox regression were used to assess late mortality. Results: A total of 5150 patients were included (4.2% from the Midwest, 17.2% from the Northeast, 22.5% from the South, and 56.1% from the West regions). The median follow-up was 12.3 (95% CI: 11.6–13.1 years). Median overall survival was 11.0 (95% CI: 9.2-NR years), 14.3 (95% CI: 12.4–16.4 years), 11.3 (95% CI: 9.7–14.8 years), and 12.0 (95% CI: 11.3–13.0 years) for Midwest, Northeast, South, and West regions, respectively. In multivariable analysis, older age, male sex, thoracic cancer, the presence of regional and distal disease, receiving chemotherapy, not undergoing surgical resection, and being treated in the West vs. Northeast region were found to be independent predictors of poor survival. We identified a significant survival difference between the different regions, with the West exhibiting the worst survival compared to the Northeast region. Conclusions: In addition to the well-known predictors of late mortality in ACC (tumor location, stage, and treatment modalities), our study identified a lack of social support (being unmarried) and geographic location (West region) as independent predictors of late mortality in multivariable analysis. Further research is needed to explore the causal relationships. Full article

Corn syrup is a cost-effective sweetener ingredient for the food industry. In producing syrup from corn, process control to enhance and/or maintain a constant dextrose equivalent value (DE) is a constant challenge, especially in semi-automated/batch production settings, which are common in small to medium-size factories. Existing work has focused on continuous process control to keep parameter values within a setpoint. The machine learning method applied is for time series data. This study focuses on building process control models to enable semi-automation in small to medium-size factories in which the data are not as time dependent. Correlation coefficients were used to identify key process parameters that contribute to feed pH value and DE. Artificial neural network (ANN), support vector machine (SVM), and linear regression (LR) models were built to predict feed pH and DE. The results suggest (1) model accuracy ranges from 91% to 96%; (2) the ANN models yielded about 1% to 3% higher accuracy than the SVM and LR models and the prediction accuracy is robust even with as few as six data sets; (3) both the SVM and ANN models have noise tolerant properties, but ANN has a higher noise tolerance than SVM; (4) SVM performance can be hindered when using high-dimensional data sets; (5) the LR model yields higher variation in accuracy prediction than ANN and SVM; (6) distribution fitting is a good approach for generating data; however, fidelity of fitting can greatly impact accuracy; and (7) multi-stage models yield higher accuracy than single-stage models, but there are pros and cons to each approach. Structure and Evolution of Multi-Trend Faults in BZ19-6 Buried Hill of the Bohai Bay Basin, Eastern China

Defining the structure and evolution of multi-trend faults is critical for analyzing the accumulation of hydrocarbons in buried hills. Based on high-resolution seismic and drilling data, the structural characteristics and evolutionary mechanism of multi-trend faults were investigated in detail through the structural analysis theory and quantitative calculations of fault activity, allowing us to determine the implication that fault evolution exerts on hydrocarbon accumulation in the BZ19-6 buried hill. There are four kinds of strike faults developed on the buried hill: SN-, NNE-, NE–ENE-, and nearly EW-trending, which experienced the Mesozoic Indosinian, Yanshan, and Cenozoic Himalayan tectonic movements. During the Indosinian, the BZ19-6 was in a SN-oriented compressional setting, with active faults composed of SN-trending strike-slip faults (west branch of the Tanlu fault zone) and near EW-trending thrust faults (Zhang-peng fault zone). During the Yanshanian, the NNE-trending normal faults were formed under the WNW–ESE tensile stress field. Since the Himalayan period, the BZ19-6 buried hill has evolved into the rifting stage. In rifting stage Ⅰ, all of the multi-trend pre-existing faults were reactivated, and the EW-trending thrust faults became normal faults due to negative inversion. In rifting stage II, a large number of NE–ENE-trending normal faults were newly formed in the NW–SE-oriented extensional setting, which made the structure pattern more complicated. In rifting stage III, the buried hill entered the post-rift stage, with only part of the NNE- and NE–ENE-trending faults continuously active. Multi-trend faults are the result of the combination of various multi-phase stress fields and pre-existing structures, which have great influence on the formation of tectonic fractures and then control the distribution of high-quality reservoirs in buried hills. The fractures controlled by the NNE- and EW-trending faults have higher density and scale, and fractures controlled by NE–ENE trending faults have stronger connectivity and effectiveness. The superposition of multi-trend faults is the favorable distribution of high-quality reservoirs and the favorable accumulation area of hydrocarbon. Full article
