This systematic review addressed the need for documentation and analysis of the scope and topical foci of research on education for sustainable development (ESD) in East Asia. The review used descriptive, content, and keyword co-occurrence analyses to synthesize features of 1915 Scopus-indexed journal articles published between 1991 and 2023. The authors found that research interest in ESD in East Asia has grown rapidly, accelerated by the pronouncement of the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development in 2005 and the Sustainability Agenda 2030 in 2015. Researchers in China, Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, Indonesia, and Thailand have been the leading contributors to this regional knowledge base. Consistent with global ESD reviews, content analysis revealed that this literature emerged from studies of environmental education and gradually expanded to include sociocultural, economic, and integrated perspectives on sustainability. Keyword co-occurrence analysis revealed three thematic clusters: Environmental Sustainability in Education, Social Sustainability in Education, and Teaching and Learning for Sustainability. Temporal co-word analysis highlighted the research front, which includes environmental research focusing on carbon/energy issues, technology-enhanced learning for sustainability, empirical research methods for studying ESD, and, to a lesser degree, studies of the economic pillar of sustainability in education. Recommendations are offered for future research. Full article

City planners are facing an emergency to develop, promote, and implement actions that allow the mobility needs of people and businesses in cities (and their surroundings) to be satisfied to assure a better quality of life. Among the different actions to promote, there is public transport, which should be the cornerstone of sustainable urban mobility. The only way to achieve the transition from private to public is by integrating services into a multimodal network and then encouraging interchange between different modes of transportation. In this context, the development of mobility as a service (MaaS) solutions is significant, and different studies have been developed in recent years. The paper thus introduces a scientometric review of such a topic in relation to the Sustainable Development Goals of Agenda 2030. The study focuses on the current state of MaaS implementation, trends, and research gaps, with an in-depth analysis of emerging themes, based on 819 documents selected from the WoS and Scopus databases. Introducing the database, and research methodology, an accurate interpretation of the data generated by the bibliometric analysis, and the primary evaluation parameters are outlined. The identified studies have been then categorized into three thematic groups with the intention of offering a comprehensive study that identifies the shortcomings and difficulties in the research carried out in these areas up to today. Particular attention is paid to how this research relates to the Sustainable Development Goals. Full article

This study adopts an integrative review approach to explore the differences and similarities between smart cities and sustainable cities. The research starts by performing two systematic literature reviews about both paradigms and, after that, employs a thematic analysis to identify key themes, definitions, and characteristics that differentiate and connect these two urban development concepts. The findings reveal more similarities than differences between the two paradigms. Despite this, some key differences are identified. Smart cities are characterized by their use of advanced information and communication technologies to enhance urban infrastructure, improve public services, and optimize resource management. In contrast, sustainable cities focus on environmental conservation, social equity, and economic viability to ensure long-term urban resilience and quality of life. This study is important because it clarifies both concepts and highlights the potential for integrating smart and sustainable city strategies to address contemporary urban challenges more holistically. The findings also suggest a convergence towards the concept of ‘smart sustainable cities’, which leverage technology to achieve sustainability goals. Finally, this study concludes by identifying research gaps and proposing a future research agenda to further understand and optimize the synergy between smart and sustainable urban development paradigms. Urban ecosystems, and the services they provide, are a key focus of the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, specifically SDG 11, which emphasizes making cities inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable. Green infrastructure (GI) is crucial in enhancing citizens’ quality of life and achieving this goal and it can be defined as a strategically planned network of natural and semi-natural areas designed to deliver a range of ecosystem services (ESs). These infrastructures improve ecosystem functioning, protect biodiversity, promote health, support sustainable land and water management, and boost the local green economy. This paper explores the scientific literature on GI and their ESs in cities using bibliometric science. By combining the keywords “Green Infrastructures”, “Ecosystem Services”, and “Cities” with VOSviewer software (1.6.20 version), we analyzed trends over time. Results show growing attention to these topics, emphasizing human well-being, urban resilience, and sustainability. The study also highlights that focusing exclusively on either “Green Infrastructure in Cities” or “Ecosystem Services in Cities” leads to fragmented insights. A more integrated examination of these three domains offers a holistic view and underscores the importance of considering ecosystem disservices. The study further identifies key research directions, including the need for a comprehensive evaluation of diverse GI types, especially those that are under-researched, such as green roofs, sports areas, and wetlands, and the underexplored role of cultural ecosystem services. Additionally, future research should consider both the benefits and disservices of GI to support better urban planning decisions. Finally, integrating biophysical, social, and economic values of ESs is critical for providing more holistic insights and enhancing sustainable urban development. The novelty of this paper lies in its integrated, holistic approach to examining GI and ESs in urban areas, with a focus on ecosystem disservices, insufficient attention to specific GI types, and the role of cultural ecosystem services—each contributing to the creation of more resilient and sustainable cities. This paper proposes causal economic machine learning (CEML) as a research agenda that utilizes causal machine learning (CML), built on causal economics (CE) decision theory. Causal economics is better suited for use in machine learning optimization than expected utility theory (EUT) and behavioral economics (BE) based on its central feature of causal coupling (CC), which models decisions as requiring upfront costs, some certain and some uncertain, in anticipation of future uncertain benefits that are linked by causation. This multi-period causal process, incorporating certainty and uncertainty, replaces the single-period lottery outcomes augmented with intertemporal discounting used in EUT and BE, providing a more realistic framework for AI machine learning modeling and real-world application. It is mathematically demonstrated that EUT and BE are constrained versions of CE. With the growing interest in natural experiments in statistics and causal machine learning (CML) across many fields, such as healthcare, economics, and business, there is a large potential opportunity to run AI models on CE foundations and compare results to models based on traditional decision-making models that focus only on rationality, bounded to various degrees. To be most effective, machine learning must mirror human reasoning as closely as possible, an alignment established through CEML, which represents an evolution to truly “human AI”. This paper maps out how the non-linear optimization required for the CEML structural response functions can be accomplished through Sequential Least Squares Programming (SLSQP) and applied to data sets through the S-Learner CML meta-algorithm. Upon this foundation, the next phase of research is to apply CEML to appropriate data sets in various areas of practice where causality and accurate modeling of human behavior are vital, such as precision healthcare, economic policy, and marketing. In this opinion, we offer a new perspective on the important and persistent problem of diagnostic errors for patients with non-specific complaints (NSCs). As an increasing number of complex patients present clinicians with challenging diagnostic work in the time-pressured and high-volume contexts of EDs, we need to improve how clinicians and healthcare organizations can understand and perform safe diagnostics for patients with NSCs. The combination of a growing number of patients with NSCs and the ways in which clinicians use the categories ‘non-specific complaints’ and ‘non-specific diagnosis’ in diagnostic work in emergency departments presents a growing patient safety concern especially for older patients with multimorbidity that require the integration of clinical and organizational research. We argue why the growing numbers of patients with NSCs and clinicians’ use of these categories have implications for patient safety both within and beyond the acute care context. We end by pointing to the importance of an interdisciplinary patient safety research agenda, ideally followed by the development of targeted usable protocols for older multimorbid patients with non-specific complaints. The importance of introducing a new sustainable development paradigm to safeguard the entire planet is now undisputed. One of the tools aiming to respond to this need consists of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) contained within the 2030 Agenda. Businesses play a crucial role in achieving these objectives and must prove themselves to be active actors in promoting sustainable practices. However, the integration of these objectives within their business models turns out to be a complex operation, which requires numerous skills and resources. This paper consists of a systematic literature review on the topic of research on the SDGs in the areas of business, management and accounting with the aim of identifying the barriers facing communities and tools to support companies in this process, as well as possible areas for improvement. Furthermore, it allows us to identify gaps on which future research should focus. To achieve this aim, papers related to the 2030 Agenda and the SDGs published in journals indexed in the Scopus database between January 2015 and June 2024 were analysed. The results demonstrated a great heterogeneity within the research area and the emergence of some important concepts, such as the circular economy, artificial intelligence and Industry 4.0, and some recurring themes, such as the role of stakeholders in achieving the SDGs and the financial and non-financial benefits of SDG strategies and practices. Artificial intelligence (AI) is fundamentally transforming the marketing landscape, enabling significant progress in customer engagement, personalization, and operational efficiency. The retail sector has been at the forefront of the AI revolution, adopting AI technologies extensively to transform consumer interactions, supply chain management, and business performance. Given its early adoption of AI, the retail industry serves as an essential case context for investigating the broader implications of AI for consumer behavior. Drawing on 404 articles published between 2000 and 2023, this study presents a comprehensive bibliometric and content analysis of AI applications in retail marketing. The analysis used VOSviewer (1.6.20.0 version) and Bibliometrix (version 4.3.1) to identify important contributors, top institutions, and key publication sources. Co-occurrence keyword and co-citation analyses were used to map intellectual networks and highlight emerging themes. Additionally, a focused content analysis of 50 recent articles was selected based on their relevance, timeliness, and citation influence. It revealed six primary research streams: (1) consumer behavior, (2) AI in retail marketing, (3) business performance, (4) sustainability, (5) supply chain management, and (6) trust. These streams were categorized through thematic relevance and theoretical significance, emphasizing AI’s impact on the retail sector. The contributions of this study are twofold. Theoretically, it integrates existing research on AI in retail marketing and outlines future research in areas such as AI’s role in the domain of consumer behavior. From an empirical standpoint, the study highlights how AI can be applied to enhance customer experiences and improve business operations. Full article

This paper aims to systematically review and analyze the literature on green shipping, focusing on research trends, key areas, and future directions. A bibliometric analysis is conducted on 1339 articles published between 2000 and 2023, using data from the SCI-EXPANDED and SSCI core collections on the Web of Science platform. Co-occurrence analyses are performed for authors, countries, institutions, and keywords. The analysis reveals exponential growth in green shipping research over the past decade, with a significant increase since 2019. China leads in publication output and international collaboration. Key research areas identified include sustainable development, green energy, green ports, and green supply chain management. Green shipping research is rapidly expanding, emphasizing sustainable practices and technological advancements. Future research is expected to integrate artificial intelligence, big data analytics, and other advanced technologies to further promote sustainability. Strengthening international cooperation and interdisciplinary integration will be crucial for advancing the global green shipping agenda. Full article

This study examines the balance between technical and social focus in artificial intelligence, blockchain, cybersecurity, and privacy publications in Web of Science across countries, exploring the social factors that influence these research priorities. We use regression analysis to identify predictors of research focus and cluster analysis to reveal patterns across countries, combining these methods to provide a broader view of global research priorities. Our findings reveal that liberal democracy index, life expectancy, and happiness are significant predictors of research focus, while traditional indicators like education and income show weaker relationships. This unexpected result challenges conventional assumptions about the drivers of research priorities in digital technologies. The study identifies distinct clusters of countries with similar patterns of research focus across the four technologies, revealing previously unrecognized global typologies. Notably, more democratic societies tend to emphasize social implications of technologies, while some rapidly developing countries focus more on technical aspects. These findings suggest that political and social factors may play a larger role in shaping research agendas than previously thought, necessitating a re-evaluation of how we understand and predict research focus in rapidly evolving technological fields. The study provides valuable information for policymakers and researchers, informing strategies for technological development and international collaboration in an increasingly digital world. The ability of plants to modify biomass allocation and leaf phenotypes to best utilize available resources has been heavily studied. No Tabernaemontana species have been included in this research agenda. Therefore, Tabernaemontana pandacaqui Poir. and Tabernaemontana rotensis (Kaneh.) B.C. Stone plants were subjected to 24% or 100% sunlight and various traits were determined to compare the relative level of plasticity. Midday net carbon dioxide assimilation was greater for T. rotensis in sun-grown plants, but greater for T. pandacaqui in shade-grown plants. Saturating light intensity and midday Fv/Fm were greater for T. rotensis in sun-grown plants, but did not differ between the species for shade-grown plants. Light compensation intensity was greater for T. rotensis than T. pandacaqui in both light treatments. Apparent quantum yield was greater for T. pandacaqui shade-grown plants but was similar for the two species in sun-grown plants. Greater relative root growth in full sun compared with shade was exhibited by T. rotensis but not by T. pandacaqui. These findings indicated that T. pandacaqui develops functional traits that improve performance in shade-grown plants, and T. rotensis develops facultative traits that enable performance in sun-grown plants. These insights into how T. pandacaqui and T. rotensis respond to sun and shade conditions add to the knowledge needed to inform the selection of niche conditions when using them in managed mixed forest plantings such as conservation and restoration sites. The importance of energy security is emphasized in Goal 7 of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda to guarantee that everyone has affordable, dependable, and contemporary energy access. In addition to transforming human life, whole economies, and even the planet, sustainable energy offers a chance for a better future. The absence of energy security impacts serious health problems, education, and household difficulties. Research on energy security has emphasized various angles worldwide. However, investigations of the impact of energy security on women’s empowerment are still scant. This study thus investigates the relationship between energy security and women’s empowerment (WE) in 167 countries from 2002 to 2021, as well as the influence of urbanization development levels on this nexus. Moreover, this study explores the variation in women’s empowerment between geographical regions by referencing the MENA, OECD, and SAARC countries. A two-step system GMM was used to achieve the objectives of this research. The findings show first that renewable energy availability has a significant effect on WE worldwide. Secondly, in terms of energy security, the variables total availability of natural resource rents and renewable energy both have a positive impact on women’s empowerment in the MENA, while in the OECD and SAARC countries, they have an indirect link with WE. Third, the integrating effect of total natural resource rents with urbanization significantly affects WE in all five models. Fourth, we used access to electricity to represent resource affordability. Unexpectedly, the results show its negative and significant association with WE. Fifth, in terms of energy security, both energy availability and affordability favor WE in OECD countries. Finally, the coefficient of integration of access to electricity and urbanization shows a positive and significant association with WE in the OECD, MENA, and SAARC regions. However, it is noteworthy to mention that access to electricity alone does not influence WE worldwide. Additionally, a series of tests confirm the robustness of the results. This research provides insight into the development and implications of energy security-related women’s empowerment policies. Full article

This research is framed in Spain, where 17% of the territory exceeds the maximum radon limits allowed by the WHO, and aims to study the role and impact of the media in radon risk communication. A mixed methodological design is applied, combining content analysis of news published in the last two decades by local media in the most affected areas with interviews with journalists and a survey of citizens to provide a multi-perspective approach. The results show that, although news coverage of radon is becoming more frequent, it is a topic that fails to position itself on the agenda for effective communication. The media are the most frequent source of information on radon, although they are not considered by the public the most trustworthy one. News stories about radon focus mainly on health and research to inform about the radon levels to which citizens are exposed and the risks associated with cancer. Collaborative strategies between the media, organizations, and public administration seem key to advancing the fight against radon. Full article

Agile methodologies, initially designed for the project level, face challenges when applied at enterprise levels where complex projects and diverse stakeholders are involved. To meet this challenge, several large-scale agile methodologies have been proposed. However, these approaches are not flexible enough or tailored to the needs of organizations, projects, and their teams. It is in this context that hybrid methodologies have emerged. This study aims to conduct a systematic literature review to trace the evolution of hybrid scaling of agile and characterize different approaches to implement it. This study starts by assessing 1509 studies through the use of the PRISMA 2020 framework and identifies 38 relevant studies in this field. The findings indicate that the majority of studies are from 2021 onwards and that qualitative methodologies supported by case studies predominate, making it possible to characterize tailoring processes in these organizations. Moreover, the implementation of hybrid scaling of agile is supported by the paradigm of ambidextrous strategy, a combination of agile with traditional project management methodologies, and continuous improvements. This study contributes insights into navigating the complexities of agile scaling, offering practical guidance for organizations seeking to optimize their project management practices. Full article

Given the conceptual confusion between resilience and sustainability in organizations in the literature, the present study examined the literature on the relationship between the two by reviewing the past 27 years of global literature on resilience and sustainability in organizations, to clarify the relationship between the two. It adapted the Integrated Systematic Literature Review technique (ISLR) to identify the most influential scholars in the knowledge domain of resilience and sustainability in organizations, uncover the intellectual structure that defines the knowledge base on resilience and sustainability in organizations, identify the most influential documents in the knowledge domain, derive the most interesting topics in the knowledge domain, and derive the cutting-edge body of knowledge on resilience and sustainability in organizations in response to the dynamic nature of resilience and sustainability problems. The findings reveal that Ivanov, Bansal, and Sarkis are the most influential scholars in the knowledge domain, and the most influential document was authored by Ortiz-de-Mandojana and Bansal. This study uncovers five schools of thought: sustainable business strategy, predictive analytics, sustainable supply chain, ecological resilience, and sustainable leadership. Informed by the analyses, a cutting-edge framework, comprising sustainability practices, sustainability outputs, and sustainability and resilience outcomes, was derived to guide future research and inform practitioners on how to ensure resilience and sustainability in their organizations.
