Background/Objectives: Positive body image is linked to improved mental and physical well-being, healthier lifestyles, and fewer unhealthy weight control behaviors. Cultural factors also play a role in influencing body appreciation. This study investigated the associations between body appreciation, body weight, lifestyle factors, and subjective health among bachelor’s students in Lithuania and Poland. Methods: A cross-sectional online survey was conducted with 1290 students from universities in both countries. The Body Appreciation Scale-2 (BAS-2) measured body appreciation, while participants provided self-reported data on their dietary habits, physical activity, sleep, health perceptions, and body weight and height. Linear regression models explored associations between BAS-2 scores, actual and perceived body weight, lifestyle habits, and subjective health. Results: Gender and country-based differences in body appreciation were observed. Lithuanian female students reported a higher median BAS score of 33 compared to 32 among Polish female students (p = 0.02), despite having a higher median BMI (22.3 kg/m2 vs. 21.1 kg/m2, p = 0.001). Positive body appreciation was linked to healthier dietary behaviors, such as higher consumption of fruits, vegetables, fish, and regular breakfasts. Additionally, greater physical activity and sufficient sleep were associated with higher body appreciation, while higher intake of sweets, sugary drinks, and fast food correlated with lower BAS-2 scores. Both BMI and perceived weight were negatively associated with body appreciation, particularly among females. Conclusion: Body appreciation is closely linked to body weight, healthier lifestyle, and positive health perceptions, suggesting that promoting healthier habits may improve body appreciation. Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is a recently introduced term for steatotic liver disease (SLD). Although the inflammatory process is central to the pathogenesis of SLD, research investigating the differences in systemic inflammation across various SLD subtypes as well as sex differences is limited. This population-based, cross-sectional study investigated the association between SLD subtypes and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) levels among Korean adults (N = 20,141; mean age: 50.8 ± 16.7 years). The participants were classified into five groups that included no SLD, MASLD, metabolic alcohol-associated liver disease (MetALD), alcoholic liver disease with metabolic dysfunction (ALD with MD), and other SLDs. The median (Q1, Q3) value of the hs-CRP level was 0.54 mg/L (0.33, 1.04). Among men, compared to levels in the no SLD group, the MASLD, MetALD, and ALD with MD groups were associated with 41.9% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 35.1–49.1%), 46.8% (95% CI: 35.0–59.6%), and 51.8% (95% CI: 30.0–77.2%) increases in hs-CRP levels, respectively. The association between SLD subtypes and hs-CRP levels was stronger among women, and compared to the levels in the no SLD group, the MASLD, MetALD, and ALD with MD groups were associated with 81.5% (95% CI: 73.6–89.8%), 84.3% (95% CI: 58.1–114.8%), and 98.2% (95% CI: 38.0–184.8%) increases in hs-CRP levels, respectively. In conclusion, our findings indicate a varying profile of systemic inflammation across SLD subtypes, with more pronounced increases in hs-CRP levels in women with SLDs. Full article

In modern society, individuals spend an increasing amount of time indoors, emphasizing the importance of understanding the health impacts of indoor environments. This study focused on measuring indoor air quality to identify vulnerable populations and observe the effects of residential environment improvements on air quality. Targeting low-income families and elderly households, known for their heightened vulnerability to environmental health risks, the study involved direct visits to 2328 low-income households across 16 cities and provinces in South Korea from 2021 to 2022. Indoor air quality parameters, including PM2.5, PM10, total volatile organic compounds (TVOC), formaldehyde (HCHO), and airborne mold, were measured. Among these households, 300 with critically compromised living conditions received support for wallpaper and paneling replacement. Comparative measurements before and after the renovations revealed that single-person households had higher levels of PM2.5 and TVOC compared with households with four or more members. Additionally, households with elevated concentrations of airborne mold also exhibited higher levels of PM2.5 and PM10. Importantly, households that received environmental improvements showed a significant reduction in airborne mold concentration by approximately 50% or more. This study underscores the importance of indoor environmental health and provides valuable evidence supporting policies focused on health promotion and residential welfare improvements for vulnerable populations. The research is distinguished by its comprehensive nature, involving direct measurements from nearly 2000 households nationwide, rather than relying solely on secondary data. Full article

Introduction: In 2019, 9.3% (463 million) of adults worldwide had diabetes, according to the International Diabetes Federation (IDF). By 2030, the number will rise to 10.2% (578 million) and 10.9% (700 million) by 2045 if effective prevention methods are not implemented. Agarwood is a pathological product and valuable plant due to its numerous medicinal properties, and it is used as an essential ingredient in medicine. Therefore, we conducted this review to determine agarwood’s potential health benefit effect on type 2 diabetes. Results and Discussion: Although no clinical trials were found, the evidence from in vitro and in vivo studies is promising. Agarwood has shown the ability to reduce the activity of α-glucosidase, α-amylase, and lipase, promote adiponectin secretion during adipogenesis, and reduce oxidative stress. Animal studies elucidated hypoglycaemic, antidyslipidemia, anti-obesity, and organ protective effects from agarwood. Materials and Methods: Original articles were searched in three databases (PubMed, Scopus, and Cochrane Library) using the medical subject heading (MeSH) term “diabetes” crossed with the term “agarwood” from 2008 to 2024. Synonyms and relevant search terms were also searched. Conclusions: This effect underscores the need for further research and the potential for groundbreaking discoveries in the field of diabetes treatment. Full article

Ligusticum chuanxiong Hort. is considered an important medicinal herb with extremely high economic value and medicinal value due to its various effects, including anti-oxidation, sedative action, hepatoprotection, and invigorating blood circulation. However, L. chuanxiong cultivation is hampered by various plant diseases, especially the root rot caused by Fusarium solani, hindering the sustainable development of the L. chuanxiong industry. The occurrence of soil-borne diseases is closely linked to imbalances in the microbial community structure. Here, we studied the yields, rhizosphere microbiota, and soil physiochemical characteristics of healthy and diseased L. chuanxiong plants affected by root rot with high-throughput sequencing and microbial network analysis, aiming to explore the relationships between soil environmental factors, microbiomes, and plant health of L. chuanxiong. According to the results, L. chuanxiong root rot significantly decreased the yields, altered microbial community diversity and composition, enriched more pathogenic fungi, recruited some beneficial bacteria, and reduced microbial interaction network stability. The Mantel test showed that soil organic matter and pH were the major environmental factors modulating plant microbiome assembly. The root rot severity was significantly affected by soil physiochemical properties, including organic matter, cation exchange capacity, available nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and pH. Furthermore, two differential microbes that have great potential in the biocontrol of L. chuanxiong root rot were dug out in the obtained results, which were the genera Trichoderma and Bacillus. This study provided a theoretical basis for further studies revealing the microecological mechanism of L. chuanxiong root rot and the ecological prevention and control of L. chuanxiong root rot from a microbial ecology perspective. Background/Objectives: A favorable attitude towards suicidal behavior is associated with an increased risk of suicidal behavior in youth populations. Hence, the aim of the present study was to analyze attitudinal beliefs about suicidal behavior among Mexican medical and nursing students. We also compared attitudinal beliefs about suicidal behavior according to the religious affiliation of the participants. Methods: This is a cross-sectional observational study. Attitudinal beliefs about suicidal behavior were assessed using the Attitudinal Beliefs Questionnaire about Suicide Behavior (CCCS-18). We evaluated personal and family histories of suicide using the Spanish version of the MINI International Neuropsychiatric Interview. Comparative analysis between nursing and medical students was performed, using Chi-square tests for categorical variables and Student t-tests for continuous variables. Results: A total of 195 (52.2%) medical students and 178 (47.8%) nursing students participated. Medicine students reported a higher prevalence of a family history of suicide attempts and knowing someone who had tried to die by suicide compared to nursing students (p = 0.001). Regarding attitudinal beliefs—specifically, suicide in terminal patients—medical students reported higher scores than nursing students (9.50 ± 5.91 vs. 11.23 ± 6.38, p < 0.001), while the latter exhibited higher scores in attitudinal beliefs related to suicide itself (9.55 ± 4.45 vs. 7.28 ± 4.09, p < 0.001). Both groups display similar scores when compared by religious affiliation. Conclusions: Our findings show differences in attitudinal beliefs about suicidal behavior between medical and nursing students. Medical students exhibited more positive responses toward suicide in terminal patients, while nursing students had higher values for attitudinal beliefs related to suicide itself. These results could be considered in the planning of health sciences curricula in order to positively impact future suicide prevention efforts. The sterile insect technique (SIT) stands as an eco-friendly approach for mosquito control, but it is impeded by the limited availability of γ-ray radiation source. This research sought to investigate a different radiation source—the Varian Clinac 23EX linear accelerator, which is frequently used for X-ray therapy in cancer treatment. Evaluation parameters including emergence rate, average survival time, induced sterility (IS), male mating competitiveness of irradiated males and fecundity (the number of eggs per female per batch), and the egg hatch rate of females mated with irradiated males were assessed to gauge the application potential of this cancer treatment equipment in the realm of the SIT. The results indicated that X-rays from radiation therapy equipment can effectively suppress the hatch rate of offspring mosquitoes without adversely affecting the emergence rate of irradiated males or the fecundity of females. In addition, at an X-ray dose of 60 Gy, the induced sterility in Ae. aegypti was comparable to the sterility induced by 40 Gy of γ-rays with both treatments resulting in 99.6% sterility. Interestingly, when a release ratio of 7:1 (irradiated males:unirradiated males) was used to competitively mate with females, the IS results resulted by 60 Gy X-rays and 40 Gy γ-rays were still at 70.3% and 73.7%, respectively. In conclusion, the results underscored the potential of the Varian Clinac 23EX linear accelerator as an X-ray source in SIT research. Full article

Cervical cancer is one of the leading causes of mortality in women of reproductive age. In recent years, the development of preventive and therapeutic strategies has significantly increased survival rates. While this represents an important medical achievement, it has also raised a major social issue regarding the need to ensure an adequate quality of life for surviving patients. Many of these women are left without their reproductive capacity at an age when their desire for motherhood has not yet been fulfilled. Infertility or subfertility in cancer survivors is actually a growing problem, complicated by the current trend of increasingly delaying pregnancy. The psychological effects of this issue can be devastating, sometimes even more so than the cancer diagnosis itself. Although today fertility-sparing surgeries can ensure excellent reproductive outcomes with minimal oncological risk, obstetric sequelae remain significant, and affected women often require specialized care pathways. Additionally, adequate counselling is still not provided to all patients who cannot access fertility-sparing treatments and who find themselves without hope. Reproductive medicine is therefore facing the modern challenge of offering concrete options to help these patients realize their desire for motherhood. The aim of this article is to provide an overview of the therapeutic options available to young women facing an early- or later-stage diagnosis of cervical cancer. Full article

Spirulina (Limnospira platensis) is a microalga recognised for its rich nutritional composition and diverse bioactive compounds, making it a valuable functional food, feed, and therapeutic agent. This review examines spirulina’s chemical composition, including its high levels of protein, essential fatty acids, vitamins, minerals, and bioactive compounds, such as the phycocyanin pigment, polysaccharides, and carotenoids, in food, feed, and medicine. These compounds exhibit various biological activities, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, antiviral, anticancer, antidiabetic and lipid-lowering effects. Spirulina’s potential to mitigate oxidative stress, enhance immune function, and inhibit tumour growth positions it as a promising candidate for preventing chronic diseases. Additionally, spirulina is gaining interest in the animal feed sector as a promotor of growth performance, improving immune responses and increasing resistance to diseases in livestock, poultry, and aquaculture. Despite its well-documented health benefits, future research is needed to optimize production/cultivation methods, improve its bioavailability, and validate its efficacy (dose–effect relationship) and safety through clinical trials and large-scale human trials. This review underscores the potential of spirulina to address global health and nutrition challenges, supporting its continued application in food, feed, and medicine. Full article

Background/Objectives: Mental health disorders pose a substantial challenge for healthcare workers, particularly in the post-COVID-19 era. Public health medical residents (PHRs) played a pivotal role during the pandemic and were significantly affected by the heavy workload. This study aims to uncover potential associations between workload characteristics and symptoms of anxiety and insomnia in Italian PHRs based on data collected in 2022 through the Public Health Residents’ Anonymous Survey in Italy (PHRASI) study. Methods: A total of 379 residents completed the self-administered questionnaire comprising the Generalized Anxiety Disorder-2 (GAD-2), and the Insomnia Severity Index (ISI). Results: While 36% PHRs reported anxiety symptoms (GAD-2 ≥ 3), 12% reported moderate-to-severe insomnia symptoms (ISI ≥ 15). The multivariate logistic regressions showed that a high work–life interference was associated with the presence of anxiety and insomnia symptoms, while attending two or more simultaneous traineeships was associated with insomnia symptoms. A high workload perceived was positively associated with both the mental health outcomes considered, while the perception of work environment manageability was negatively associated with them. Curcumin is utilized extensively as Chinese medicine in Asia due to its antioxidant, antimicrobial, and inflammatory activities. However, its use has the challenges of low oral bioavailability and high heat sensitivity. The aim of this research was to produce flexible nano-liposomes containing curcumin using an innovative approach of ethanol injection and Tween 80 to enhance the stability and preservation of curcumin. The mean particle size, encapsulation efficiency, thermal degradation, storage stability, and curcumin release in flexible nano-liposomes were also investigated. We found that the mean particle size of curcumin-loaded flexible nano-liposome decreased from 278 nm to 27.6 nm. At the same time, the Tween 80 concentration increased from 0 to 0.15 wt%, which corresponded with the results of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) morphology analyses, and particle size decreased with an enhancement in Tween 80 concentration. Further, pure curcumin was quickly released within one hour at 37 °C, and first-order kinetics matched with its release curve. However, curcumin encapsulated in flexible nano-liposomes showed a slow release of 71.24% within 12 h, and a slower release pattern matched with the Higuchi model over 24 h, ultimately reaching 84.63% release. Hence, flexible nano-liposomes of curcumin made by a combination of ethanol injection and Tween 80 addition prevented the thermal degradation of curcumin, and enhanced its storage stability and preservation for future drug delivery applications. Factors Affecting Cancer Mortality in Young Adults: Findings from a Prospective Cohort Study

Background/Objectives: Cancer incidence in young adults or those aged 15–49 years old has increased during the past decade. Knowledge about the risk factors for cancer-related deaths in young adults is limited, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Methods: This analysis was based on the Hanoi Prospective Cohort Study, an ongoing study of 39,401 participants aged 15 or older in Northern Vietnam in the 2007–2019 period. A Cox proportional hazard regression model was used to calculate the hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) for the association between potential factors and the risk of cancer-related deaths. Results: With a median follow-up of 11.01 years, we identified 164 deaths in young adults out of 554 total deaths. Overall, family history of cancer (HR = 7.34; 95% CI: 3.30–16.36), drinking alcohol (HR = 1.82; 95% CI: 1.18–2.81), and smoking (HR = 2.22; 95% CI: 1.36–3.63) were found to be risk factors, while drinking coffee was found to be a protective factor (HR = 0.49; 95% CI: 0.24–1.00) for cancer-related deaths in young adults. Young male adults were found to be at a higher risk due to excessive cigarette smoking (HR = 1.91; 95% CI: 1.00–3.68) and alcohol consumption (HR = 2.15; 95% CI: 1.32–3.53) than those aged 50 years and older (HR = 1.36 and 95% CI: 0.96–1.93 and 1.27 and 95% CI: 0.97–1.67, respectively). The risk of death from cancer in women compared with men in the young population was twice as high as that in the older population (HR = 1.18 and 95% CI: 0.72–1.94 vs. 0.47 and 95% CI: 0.35–0.63, respectively). Conclusions: Our data suggest that the young Vietnamese population is vulnerable to the risk of cancer-related deaths and that cancer in women will increase rapidly in the future. Full article

Background and Objectives: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is one of the most common medical conditions in pregnancy, with adverse effects on maternal and neonatal outcomes. Evidence suggests a beneficial effect of plant-based dietary patterns, rich in foods derived from plant sources and low in animal foods, on type 2 diabetes; however, their effects on GDM remain unclear. We aimed to investigate the association between pre-pregnancy provegetarian food patterns and the incidence of GDM in a Spanish cohort. Materials and Methods: This subsample of the Seguimiento Universidad de Navarra (SUN) cohort analyzed 3589 Spanish university graduate pregnant women with a mean (standard deviation) age of 28 (±4.3) who were initially free of pre-existing diabetes at baseline. Dietary food consumption was evaluated through a validated, 136-item semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire. The pre-pregnancy provegetarian food pattern was obtained by assigning positive scores to plant-based food groups and reverse scores to animal food groups. Energy-adjusted quintiles were applied to allocate points to construct the provegetarian food pattern, ranging from 12 to 60 points. Logistic regression models were performed to estimate the odds ratios (OR) of GDM across quintiles of a pre-pregnancy provegetarian food pattern, using the lowest quintile as the reference category. Results: We identified 178 incidence cases of GDM. Women in the highest quintile (Q5) of provegetarian food pattern before pregnancy exhibited a 42% relative reduction in the odds of GDM [adjusted OR (95% CI) Q5 vs. Q1: 0.58 (0.35, 0.97); p-trend = 0.109]. Higher consumption of meat and dairy before pregnancy was associated with a significantly increased risk of GDM [adjusted OR (95% CI) Q5 vs. Q1: 1.94 (1.19, 3.16); p-trend = 0.005] and [adjusted OR (95% CI) Q5 vs. Q1: 1.77 (1.07, 2.94); p-trend = 0.082], respectively. Conclusions: Higher pre-pregnancy consumption of a provegetarian food pattern was associated with a lower risk of developing GDM in Spanish women. Further studies are needed to confirm these findings. Full article

Background/Objectives—Parkinson’s disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative disorder caused by the destruction of neurons in the substantia nigra of the brain. Clinical diagnosis of this disease, based on monitoring motor symptoms, often leads to a delayed start of PD therapy and control, where over 60% of dopaminergic nerve cells are damaged in the brain substantia nigra. The search for simple and stable characteristics of EEG recordings is a promising direction in the development of methods for diagnosing PD and methods for diagnosing the preclinical stage of PD development. Methods—42 subjects participated in work, of which 4 female/10 male patients were included in the group of patients with non-motor disorders, belonging to the risk group for developing PD (median age: 62 years, height: 164 cm, weight: 70 kg, pulse: 70, BPsys and BPdia: 143 and 80)/(median age: 68 years, height: 170 cm, weight: 73.9 kg, pulse: 75, BPsys and BPdia: 143 and 82). The first control group of healthy participants included 6 women (median age: 33 years, height: 161 cm, weight: 66 kg, pulse: 80, BPsys and BPdia: 110 and 80)/8 men (median age: 36.3 years, height: 175 cm, weight: 69 kg, pulse: 78, BPsys and BPdia: 120 and 85). The second control group of healthy participants included 8 women (median age: 74 years, height: 164 cm, weight: 70 kg, pulse: 70, BPsys and BPdia: 145 and 82)/6 men (median age: 51 years, height: 172 cm, weight: 72.5 kg, pulse: 74, BPsys and BPdia: 142 and 80). Wavelet oscillatory pattern estimation is performed on patients’ nocturnal sleep recordings without separating them into sleep stages. Results—Amplitude characteristics of oscillatory activity in patients without motor disorders and the prodromal PD stage are significantly reduced both in terms of changes in the number of patterns and in terms of their duration. This pattern is especially pronounced for high-frequency activity, in frequency ranges close to 40 Hz. Conclusions—The success of the analysis of the electrical activity of the brain, performed over the entire duration of the night recording, makes it promising to further use during daytime monitoring the concept of oscillatory wavelet patterns in patients with non-motor disorders, belonging to the risk group for developing PD. The daytime monitoring system can become the basis for developing screening tests to detect neurodegenerative diseases as part of routine medical examinations. Full article

Environmental forces impacting public health include exposure to toxic substances, adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), diet, and exercise. Here, we examine the first two of these forces in some detail since they may be amenable to correction through cultural, medical, and practitioner intervention. At the same time, changing people’s dietary and exercise routines are likely more resistant to these interventions and are referred to only incidentally in this review. That is, societal efforts could prevent exposure to toxicants and ACEs—not necessarily requiring cooperation by the affected individuals—whereas changing diet and exercise practices requires an individual’s discipline. Toxic substances considered in this review include endocrine disruptors, arsenics, 2,3,7,8-Tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD), the organic solvent, Trichloroethylene (TCE), and the Benzo[a]pyrene (B[a]P) produced from incomplete combustion of tobacco and other organic materials. Exposure to each of these toxic substances may have serious adverse health effects, especially in genetically more susceptible individuals. For example, children of mothers exposed to the endocrine disruptor, Atrazine, have significantly lower birth length, weight, and head circumference. Moreover, male offspring exhibit genital abnormalities, and all of these effects may be transgenerational. However, analyses of interactions among genes, the environment, and epigenetic modifications have already revealed distinctive individual risks of adverse reactions to toxic exposure. So, interventions through precision medicine might improve the health of those exposed individuals. Adults previously exposed to more than one ACE (e.g., child abuse and inter-parental violence) are more likely to develop anxiety, cancer, and diabetes. Detecting ACE exposures in children in the general population is fraught with difficulty. Thus, the risks of ACEs to our health remain even more insidious than exposures to toxicants. Nevertheless, higher provider compassion is associated with significantly better clinical outcomes for patients with these afflictions. For all these reasons, the first major aim of this review is to recount several of the major forces contributing to or impairing public health. Our second major aim is to examine mitigating influences on these forces, including social justice and provider compassion in the setting of precision medicine. Idealistically, these mitigators might eventually lead to the development of more cooperative and compassionate cultures and societies. Full article
